Text from Pages 1 - 142 of the 1965 volume:

An open textbook, an eager student, and an understanding teacher—these are the universal ingredients for a successful education. We at Paw Paw High School possess all three, the latter in Miss Kirby. She has long stressed exactness and neatness and conscientiously set the example. In doing so. she has produced class after class of fine students, pointed toward higher achievement. Miss Kirby, present head of the language department, pursued her personal education at the Universities of Madrid, Mexico, Washington, and Illinois and attended the Middlebury Unguagc School. Besides teaching Spanish and Latin, she unselfishly expends her time and effort in planning and carrying-out extracurricular activities for her students. Because of the assets which she lends to our school system, we feel very privileged and proud to dedicate the 1965 Wappaw to Miss RUTH Y. KIRBY. The teslacoil received honorable mention and the ionocraft received second place. y The boys really take their work seriously and one can see that they received tremendous results. The JETS are looking forward to another successful year. Gymnastics Left to Right: G. Blackburn, P. Reidt, B. Shaefer, P. Mearing, K. Varnesdeel, L. Anthony, H. Mearing, R. Howie, J. Mann, P. Ardu-cant, Mrs. Nantz, Advisor. Membership in the National Honor Society is considered one of the highest honors that this school can confer. A member of this society is a member of a national organization that is represented in over 6, 000 secondary schools, in both the United States and foreign countries. To be a member one must maintain a 3.5 or better average in academic subjects. The emblem of this organization is die keystone and flaming torch. At die base of the keystone appear the letters C, S, L, S, which represent the four chief principles of the Society - Character, Scholarship, Leadership, Service. The flaming torch is the emblem of the purposes of the organization - to bear forward the searching light of truth, to lead that others may follow in the light, to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring values of life, and to serve in consideration of others - these purposes are symbolized in the torch. } NATIONAL I HONO SOCIETY l G (TOP) B. All first year students are initiated in a very impressive ceremony. Last summer, Miss Kirby and a delegation of students journeyed to Illinois for the National Convention. They had many wonderful and education experiences while at the convention. They have recently returned from the State Convention which is similar to the National. The primary aim of the Latin Club is to further the study of Latin and good citizenship. M. Karpiel, L. Stoynoff, N. Lyle, D. Clair, A. Kimmel, M. Hamay, S. Sitar, K. Reynolds, K. Hood, J. Dunlop, W. Be happy you got one because it was compiled when the staff wasn't picking grapes or shoveling snow car snapping asparagus. During the school year, snooping photographers were ever alert to shoot you as you actually are. Mike O'Donnell monitored the work along with the advisor, Mr. Kermit Arnes. The 1965 Wappaw is the largest in the history of Paw Paw High. We hope the many pages will bring you many hours of pleasant reminiscence. °Ppcnv Biggest Ever STAFF Editor: Mike O'Donnell Ass't Editor: Denny Coppens Activities Editor: Mary Madison Layout Editor: Mary Babin Senior Editor: Linda Woodman Ass’t Senior Ed.: Marie Karpiel Business Manager: Bob Brennan Ass't Business Mgr.: Barb Hawley Photo I-D: Sharon Brandt Dan Shallhorn Photographers: John Moore Nancy Lyle STANDING Left to Right: Mr. Ames, M.
