WAPPAW 1962 FALL SPRING PAGES 3-32 PAGES 33-62 PAGES 63-90 Published By the Publications Class PAW PAW HIGH SCHOOL Paw Paw, Michigan For fourteen years Coach Wayne Falan has been the driving force behind Paw Paw's entire athletic program. During this time he has produced outstanding records in football, track, basketball, and baseball; and has in large part been responsible for the ever improving facilities of our physical education curriculum. Unselfishly giving his time and effort in all sports. Coach Falan has been a constant source of inspiration to his athletes. Three of his former students are now area coaches, and hundreds of others have benefited from his direction. More than this, Coach Falan has won the sincere respect of the school and the community. It is with pride and gratitude that we dedicate the 1962 Wappaw to Mr. Falan. ——— 5 1961 in the new Pa New surroundings gave new appeal to the old routine. Cliff Essig and Rich Prawat scored on runs of 68 and 70 yards respectively; Bill McGuaghey also scored on a 30 yard pass play from Fred Emmert. In the Skin’s first Wolverine League game they were swamped by Otsego 32-7. Richard Prawat scored the Big Red's lone touchdown on an 18 yard pass from Fred Emmert. To add to the Skin's miseries Bill McGaughey, Redskin starting halfback, suffered a broken foot. The Redskins second league loss came at the hands of the powerful Plainwell Trojans. The Reds held the Trojans to a 6-0 lead but then faltered and the final score was 26-0. Despite a comeback by the Redskins, the Vicksburg Bulldogs merged the victors 26-19. Fred Emmert tossed an 18 yard pass to Richard Warm -bold and Cliff Essig raced 61 and 28 yards for the Redskin Touchdowns. Clarence Stimac A1 Brockway Halfback Fullback Charles Burger Cliff Essig Center Halfback Dean Corrie Guard Paw Paw spoiled Allegan's Homecoming and also gained their first Wolverine League victory by downing Allegan 19-13. Halfback Cliff Essig scored on two runs of 32 and 8 yards in the first five minutes of play to give the Skins a good lead. Fred Emmert, playing a beautiful offensive and defensive game, passed to Doug Falan for the Skins last touchdown. Against non-league foe Galesburg, the Redskins were downed by a 20-6 score. Paw Paw's lone score came on a 78 yard pass play between Fred Emmert and Cliff Essig. Penaltyand fumbles hurt the Skins throughout the game as they were inside the Rams ten yard line three times but penalties and fumbles erased their chance to score. In Paw Paw's final two Wolverine League games they were defeated by South Haven and U-High. The scores were 45-0 and 32-6 respectively. In the U-High game, Fred Emmert tossed a 20 yard pass to Rick Warmbold who scampered 40 yards to score. HOMECOMING 1961 Homecoming 1961 was held on a cold, clear, Octoberday. It was preceeded by an exciting Thursday night bonfire. The traditional afternoon parade was followed by a pep rally in the downtown park. There, the queen candidates and the football players were introduced to the cheering crowd. That evening, the Paw Paw players met a tough, determined South Haven team on the grass of Tyler Field. During the halftime period, Lynne McGuire was crowned Homecoming Queen by Bill McGaughey, an injured football player. Lynne later reigned over the beautiful homecoming dance in the new high school. 1a Queen Lynne, and escort Jim Warner at Homecoming Dance. Senior Candidates; Mary Sue and Lynne. The team coached by A1 Hawkins, a Student Teacher, held a record of 0-6. The team consisted of eight runners; one senior, one junior, four sophomores, and two freshmen. In their first meet of the year the Redskins met with Otsego. They lost the meet by a margin of 26 to 42. Their second meet was with Plainwell and they lost this 15 to 46. Next, they played Vicksburg, and were defeated 19 to 49. They met with the Allegan Tigers who won the meet 32 to 23. South Haven beat the Reds in their fifth meet 38 to 22. In their last meet of the season, the Reds were defeated by University High by a score of 24 to 35. All of their 6 meets this year were held away. The team improved greatly over the season and all the runners will return to the squad next year, with the exception of senior Carey Hayes. Special mention should be given to sophomore Jack Klimach who led the team all year. Jack placed fifth in the Wolverine Conference Cross Country meet. Being a newly organized team, the boys were inexperienced and new at this sport. Next year the team will have had some experience and should benefit from it. 20 SEVENTH GRADE Brisbane, Barb Brown, Charles frown. The WAPPAW, because it is planned and produced almost entirely by students, is more than a mere record of the school years’ events; it is an annual addition to the accomplishments of Paw Paw High School students. This years'WAPPAW isa reflection, as were the thirty-some before it, of the ideas and feelings of this years' graduating class. The WAPPAW staff was organized in the spring of 1961 from among the members of the publications class. When school resumed in the fall of 1962, plans were made for a successful yearbook. Advertisements were collected, layouts drawn up, pictures taken, copy written, and yearbooks sold. Two dances were held as part of an extensive sales campaign. Then, when the final pages were mailed and the yearbook finished, work began on the summer supplement, the P.S. Many long hours were devoted to the production of this yearbook. The WAPPAW staff is proud of its book, the first from the new school, and grateful for the support of the student body, and the guidance of Mr. BeBeau, publications advisor. Theeditorof the 1962 WAPPAW is Clifford Essig, he is assisted by Sally Barkovich, assistant editor; and Mary Sue Crosby, business manager. 90 West Red Arrow Highway Phone 657-3283 or 657-3294 Olds - Lark There's SOMETHING EXTRA about owning an OLDS!.
