THE FCUR CANDLES Each candle represents one of our high school years. In the ninth grade seventy- one bright eyed and eager students lighted their first candle. It didn't shine very brightly, but it was a glow. We had Mrs. Cathey to direct us in general science, health and physical education, Miss Falls in Englishg Miss Choate in civics and mathematics. With such excellent instructors we could not go wrong. We were learning the basic principles which would remain with us throughout our high school years. We didn't participate in many activities that year but some of the pupils joined the 4-H Club, a few girls joined the Choir and others joined the Girl Reserves. Our school year was swiftly drawing to a close. lt was one of our most exciting years, we were starting in the last lap of our school years. The summer vacation seemed a long one because we were looking forward to the time for us to light our second candle. In August we had a chance to do this, for that was when we returned to school with a greater determination than ever before to get the most out of our scholastic training. In the tenth grade our candles were growing brighter, we were also growing in knowledge by degrees. Miss Turner joined the Red Cross Nurse Corps. She was replaced by Miss Davison. Miss Yount, the senior sponsor, was replaced by Miss Lake who led the seniors of '45 to a happy and successful graduation. Part of us joined the Dramatics Club, directed by Miss Falls. We dramatized Little Women, which was a great inspiration to all of us. It gave us a determina- tion to venture further and find what secrets this strange world held for us. By the end of our second year in high school we were beginning to act like high school students. Our candles were no longer glowing-ethey were burning brightly. Although the summer had many interesting adventures for us, it seemed only a short time until we started back to school. In our junior year we had Miss Lake to smooth the rough spots and shape us into dignified Hseniors-to-be. We now had lig'hted our third candle. They were casting a light, penetrating the future so that we might not walk in darkness. We did not have a graduating class for the first time anyone can remember because the twelfth grade had been added. Some of us were admitted to the Beta Club. We sold magazines so that we could attend the Beta Club convention in Winston-Salem. Our boys had an excellent basketball team which brought home the County Championship. Two of our boys were chosen to represent Mecklenburg County in the All-Star team which defeated Iredell County. We were also proud of the fine showing the girls' team made. The boys won the county baseball championship which made us even more proud of them. The Choir made a very good impression on the schools they visited during the year. This may be attributed to many different reasons, but one especially is that it was directed by one of the students. The first progress made toward producing an annual was our Talent Show which gave us a start for our senior year. Hardly before we could realize it, we were lighting our fourth candle. Our light had grown from a glow to a flame and now it is the torch by which the senior class IS guided. It is setting a precedent which will influence the rest of the school. Mrs. Cathey is our senior sponsor. She is constantly smoothing the rough spots, imbuing us with dignity, and is ever alert that no weakening influence comes into our everyday living so that when we behold graduation evening all will be clad in cap and gown. Glancing over the first eight weeks of school we see that each of the forty-six seniors has borne his burden. VVe have, at this writing, accomplished the organization of our class, the officers of which are given elsewhere in this book. The annual staff was organized and imme- d!atel-y started to work. Our caps and gowns have been taken care of. We ordered our rings. and expect to get them early in November, and our senior play was sched- uled for December. In conclusion, dear seniors, there is one question we all might ask: that is, will the four candles we lighted in our high school days shine far enough into the future that it will direct us upon the straight and narrow way of life, or will the candles grow dim and will we stumble along life's journey? There is one thing that we all are proud of, that is, that we lighted our candles in Paw Creek High! li.-xx' I'LuMrs11-Ju, Historian. Page Seventeen
