M ' KX Swim Near A Cloud It was large, a billowy thing that flowed into the sky. Its folds of pur- ple, pink and blue were a wash of color against the sky. Slowly, we as- cended until we seemed a part of the sky, a rainbow-colored cloud drifting endlessly. I could no longer see any- thing below but a patch of emerald which stretched for miles, broken only by the sheer face of the canyon, which rose and fell in a silent tribute to time. Its fantastic shapes were harsh and forbidding, rising sharply out of the white, thrashing river, which tumbled toward the dense thickness of the valley. As the balloon soared on, I felt ex- hilerated at this new sensation and while the wind rippled the balloon, I seemed to hear laughter. Joining in, I could share the balloon's happiness. I, too, felt the freedom it felt. I, too, loved to fly. 5 .X Alma Mater By a mighty river deepened With each rising tide, P.H.S. our Alma Mater Stands a lasting guide. Chorus: Steadfast, loyal sons and daughters, Ready at thy call, Mind and heart we pledge that never Shall our banner fall. Ever mindful of thy teachings Side by side we stand, To preserve the sound traditions Of our school and land. All of our different creeds and races, We laid at thy shrine. From these gifts Thou took the finest To be wholly thine. You and your family are packed into the famil r, out for leasant Sunday drive to Bloomingdales in New York when you sud yourself, I wonder what it's like in Paulsboro. This so intrigues y that you cancel all previous plans in favor of finding out. Relax. Before you get out your map, which may or may not contain Paulsboro, let me offer a few samples of life in Paulsboro. It won't take much time, because, after all, Paulsboro is a small town. Okay, all settled back? Great, here we go. First, if you wish to live in Paulsboro, know how to drive. Always remember that Paulsboro streets are not known for their resemblance to super-highways. Now you may be saying to yourself, I can definitely live without that! , but before you classify Paulsboro as another industrial town, and throw this away, keep reading. There are good things about Paulsboro. All settled again? Sure, Paulsboro's not Philadelphia, but small means close. Now, walk down the street of your neighborhood. Make sure you smile and say hello to every person you see. What? They're taking you away? Gee, that's a shame. If you lived in Paulsboro they'd say hello to you. Feeling lonely now? Well, in Paulsboro yould probably find friends quickly. See, that's another good thing. You make and keep good, lasting friendships. What? Still not satisfied? Okay, picture this . . . a beautiful autumn sunset, the sky a brilliant red, and orange clouds tinged with goldg the sun slowly dipping into the horizon . . . and Mobil silhouetted against the sky. Silhou- etted agains the horizon, its drapes lit with fiery color from the dying glow, was the balloon. Like the back- drop from a Hollywood movie set, it hung, suspended in time for a brief second between twilight and night. Stars, like candles in the darkness, guided it through the way from which it had come. The wind blew it toward the canyons, mirrors of red and gold. It flew, in that brief sus- pension of time, then was gone, a , moth in the night, gone only to reap- f pear when dusk should fall again. li ,. x. V '- 22, fa:-5234:-f Rember When . . . In September 1981, the Class of 1985 started our big year as Freshmen. Now we were considered in Senior High. With the help of our class officers, Pres. Chris Giovannitti, Vice Pres. Tina Cooper, Sec. Tracey Vic- tor, Treas. Lori Ann Kidd, Class Representatives: Crys- tal Galletta and Kay Widener, and our advisor Mr. Lynch. Our class was the first that needed 110 credits to graduate. We sold record albums and tapes to raise money for our senior trip. That first year as senior high students went slow, but soon we returned as sophomores. To lead us through the year, we elected Pres. Tina Cooper, Vice Pres. Chris Giovannitti, Sec. Tracey Victor, Treas. Lori Ann Kidd, Class Rep. Crystal Galletta and our advisor was Mr. Platt. We worked hard selling magazines and were rewarded by a trip to Great Adventure. Our slogan Filled with Energy, Filled with Pride, We're the Class of 85 was submitted by Lori Ann Kidd. For the first time, computer classes were offered at our school. This was also the year to order our class rings. Many of us watched the production of God- spell , which was enjoyed by all. The first half of our high school education was now completed. We were now juniors with officers, Pres. Tina Cooper, Vice Pres. Chris Giovannitti, Sec. Tracey Victor, Treas. Lori Ann Kidd, Class Rep. Crystal Gal- letta and our advisor was Mrs. Hilton. The asbestos was removed and a new P.A. system was put in. Mr. Palatucci took over the position as Principal, replacing Mr. Catando. Mr. Jones became the new Assistant Principal. The Hall of Honor and Student of the Month were initiated. We received our class rings in the fall Cwill you turn my ringl. Our senior portraits were taken. In April the play Once upon a Mattress was presented and again was a great success. To help with the cost of the Prom, we sold candy. In the spring we were put in charge of the Junior-Senior Prom, the theme being Perfect Combination , a song by Stacy Ladasaw and Johnny Gills. With the help of Purple Haze who provided music, lights, and haze',, the prom became a night we would never forget. The Pegasus was painted in the middle of the gym floor. Finally, in September 1984, we achieved the ultimate and became Seniors. It was at long last our chance to rule the school . We chose class officers. Pres: Robert fDarryD Herder, Vice Pres: Kelvin Orr, Sec: Tracey Victor, Treas: Lori Ann Kidd, Class Rep: Crystal Gal- letta and Wade Hulmes. Our advisors were Miss Miles and Mr. Limanni. We had our final fund-raiser selling Christmas cards. Along came Homecoming with the theme Fall Festi- val . Stacey Cowgill was our Student Council Pres. with Mr. Keepers as advisor. Our final stage production put on by Rev. and Mrs. Murphy was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat . What we had been looking forward to for four years had finally arrived. We were off to four fun filled days in Florida. Upon our return all we could think about was Baccalaureate and finally GRADUATION!!! We experienced joy, yet sadness as our diplomas were placed in our hand. With the tidings of Congratula- tions and feelings of relief, we took that big sigh and tossed our caps high into the sky at school's end. Now we are leaving the hallowed halls of P.H.S., not as children but as adults, and as the future of our nation. All of this will remain with us throughout our lives when we say . . . Remember When . . . Stacey Cowgill 5-04 ff' f f 5 if f iwhwm 1- fi f 'V X w A gf 5 W Y J' X x y. 'Z Our Joys As Winged Dreams Do Fly The balloons rose into the air al- most all at once, as if a child had let them go to watch their brilliant col- ors drift away. Their soft folds were caressed by the wind, creating a wave of blues, reds, purples and greens in the afternoon sky. Set free they be- gan to soar to heights we observers could only dream about. They skimmed the clouds, wafting through them, disappearing to be- come brightly colored ships sailing from view. Then they were gone, floating toward the twilight, folds ablaze with light, soaring to touch the stars. IGH ff I A iv! E vw-'Q .T Read The Earth And Sean The Sky m , U, V . . T V z??4 gg , f. . ff 2 With June behind us, and July well under way, summer found us at Wildwood, working, or meeting our friends at Don and Berts. The 1984 Summer Olympics began as well as the Presidential Primaries and the Jackson's Vic- tory Tour. The summer's hot movies were: Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Police Acade- my, The Karate Kidf' and Indiana Jones 8a The Temple of Doom. We mourned the deaths of actors Richard Burton, James Ma- son and writer Truman Capote. We were shocked when Vanessa Williams, the first Black Miss America, was forced to give up her crown after nude photos of her appeared in Penthouse magazine. September 5th, we began our senior year at a newly redone Paulsboro High School. Neon- colored lockers and repainted hallways gave the building a brighter look. Philadelphia was still our favorite city, hosting the Vice Presi- dential debates, which took place along with the presidential debates. We celebrated Homecoming with festivity in the air. Our favorite new movies were Purple Rain and Revenge of the Nerdsn. Two tragedies struck when John Facenda, the favorite Philadel- phia newscaster, died and 27 year old actor John Eric-Hexum, accidentially shot and killed himself. Winter finally arrived, bringing the winter sports with everyone eager to watch Raider's basketball and wrestling in action. Prince arrived in Philadelphia for a sold-out concert, and a few days later Thanksgiving was here, bringing the holiday season. Christmas and our winter break soon followed, and we were free to celebrate the holidays with our fam- ilies and friends. Our favorite group to warm the cold nights with was Genesis. , With the year half over, we started thinking Wlgmn about Florida on those really cold nights. Valentine's Day soon arrived, and romance was in the air. Eager for the year to be over, we began making plans for our futures. The year slowly drawing to a close, spring found us active in the Bloodmobile, which was a great success, and preparing last minute details before we left for Florida. The All Sports Banquet was a success and honor for those who attended. In April, we left for Florida and came back with many wonderful memories. Our last weeks as Paulsboro High School seniors gave us mixed feelings, but we were almost too busy to notice. After much prepa- ration, the Prom was finally here, and before we knew it, so were exams and finally gradua- tion. Our days at high school were over, but we would always carry the memories of being the Class of 1985 at Paulsboro High School. www, S X. .ji ,512 , E 'Y ' . In many ways, however, your education has only just begun. Now you must apply all you have learned in class and out of class when making the kinds of decisions which will effect your life and the lives of those around you. In messages such as this it is customary to remind you of all you have learned. Let me, instead, tell you of what you have taught me. I have learned that the students of this school possess the self-confidence, pride, courage and com- mitment to make Paulsboro High School the best it can bef A shining example of what cooperation and a sense of community spirit and brotherfsisterhood can accomplish. I believe in you and the challenge which you have left behind for those who follow to accept. Thank you for your support over the years. I wish all of you peace, love, happiness and God speed in all your future endeavors. l Miss Pulford Mr. Storms Mr' Jeffefs , Mr' Plat? , Biology, Gen. Sci., Sci. 7 Sci. 8, Gen. Sci., Bio Gen. Feeling Better About Ourselves win Most of the pain is anxiety. Red Cross workers are professionals who are very grateful for the support our school gives. The worst part was the wait, which you forget because the act of donating makes you feel that it was worth it. It was a fine year at PHS for giving blood. We were trying to break a record of 125 pints, but we fell short with 112. Mr. Herrington was Chairman and he feels this is his last year as Chairman. But, he also states we will break our record. Mr. Herrington would like to thank the administration and the helpers, for without their help, none of this would have been possible. M199 19 4 ational Honor Societ . rsrl ...,. Y at T .. The National Honor Society is an honor to be in because you represent Paulsboro High School and, by being in this, you accomplish goals that were set in your freshman year to keep a good grade-point average. To belong to the National Honor Society, you have to meet requirements of service, scholarship, an overall 88 average and show characteristics of leader- ship. The number of students in this is 25. They are now starting to work at some projects. At the football games they are running the concession stand. They are also helping to classify library materials for Mrs. Blum. For their Christmas Project, they are visiting a Day Care Center and spending the day with the children. These students weren't just working to get into the National Honor Society, they were trying to feel better about themselves by achieving such a goal. 104 1 va 5 1, 52 , 11 E A Once Upon ! One challenge success- fully met here was taking a devotion to the institution, arts and practices of the Middle Ages and defining this romantic, but not specific era into necessary theatre elements. Re- search for costumes, props, back drops, and adaptions of scenes was completed with extraordinary col- laboration of Miss Fox and her hon- ors classes and Mr. Johnson's work- shop classes with the assistance of Mr. Stuab on design construction adaption. Once Upon A Mattress was composed by Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer. The lighting was the magical elixir to set the stage into the kingdom. This production of Once Upon A Mattress was the largest production ever for Mr. and Mrs. Murphy. Although this record might not be outstanding, their hard-working attitude, and constant effort made them a team to be proud of. Although there have been some personnel changes in the team, as well as the addition of several freshmen players, the general feeling was one of optimism. Senior Aaron Blanding commented, The team is very young, but they're good and they have a great attitude. When they get the fundamentals down, they,ll be great? Blanding broke the school record scoring 39 pts. in one game. Coach Trautwein felt the team needed to learn to play together more, but enjoyed their victory over Sterling and in the Christmas Tournament. He says it is the only sport he would feel comfortable coaching. It seems that he is very comfortable as he has led our Red Raiders to victory many times throughout his coaching career. - This past year PHS wrestlers have been undefeated. The JV wrestlers clinched the Caldwell, NJ Tournament and the varsity wrestlers placed first in the Deepcreek, VA Tournament. Our secret of success is the good team effort put in by the JV and Freshmen wrestlers that pushes our Varsity to per- form to their best ability, states Mr. Fred- ericks. He also adds a bit of advice to his wrestlers, Keep your grades up. Academ- ics are the most important and are almost always overlooked until the senior year. PHS would like to thank Bob Fredericks for his dedication to the sport, his hard work, and, most of all, congratulate him on his many victories. We wish him many more victorious coaching years.
