' FOREWORD Knowing that memory is sometimes an inaccurate re- corder ol events and feelings, we, the members ot the Class of l959, do set down in words and pictures the story ot our tour years in high school in this, the Tlnd edition ot the Pegasus. We have attempted to capture some ot the gay and serious moments, the important happenings, and the many various personalities that have made up the wonderful high school era ot our lives. ln order to present this book to you, the staff has decided to let each class represent a division of Disney- land. The freshmen are in Frontierland where everything is new and the whole world is waiting tor them to explore. Sophomores are in Fantosyland where things are bright, gay, and magical. The realm ot Adventureland awaits the iuniors, who have iust begun the excitement and adven- ture that goes with being upperclassmen. And, ot course, the seniors are in Tomorrowland, tor the world ot tomor- row truly belongs to them, the builders and citizens ot tomorrow. l XNLXK li l X1-,via all 'l'lllf ' Xt ll ,lx tip ,qc ..,. ,,,,,,.,, wax W, in-B ',,... Stumpf, superintendent of the Paulsboro schools, we, the members of the staff, would like to dedicate this 22nd edition of the Pegasus- Mr. Stumpf has served Paulsboro well for 34 years. He started as a history teacher who gave of his time and energy coaching sports. ln 1943 he assumed the responsible position of principal of Paulsboro High School, continuing his interest in the welfare of the students in his care. Mr. Stumpf's faithful service in these two positions was recognized in 1951, when he was made superintendent of the Paulsboro school system. Since then he has worked without ceasing to make the schools of Paulsboro even better than they have been in the past, and to help them meet the challenge of the future. lt saddens us to think that this is the last year Mr. Stumpf will be with us, for he is retiring in June. As we graduate and leave high school behind, he will be a port of our happy memories of Paulsboro. We wish for him the very best that life has to offer. 5 q 4 1 'L-' Q swf-H6 V ,, 'gs I ..,: .W -7 Legg ' fig? 4 5 ff- ii , ,F ,xv 3 fr? ill W Vi: , I 3 1 , A 1, .wwe- H , Eu ,.,. SENIORS Xxx If ,I CLASS HISTORY The class of 1959 began as a group of about 180 students-in many ways strangers to each other. We still remain 180 individuals, but as a group we are very different. Our personal heritage still varies in countless ways. Each of us has his private hopes and aspirations. Yet all of us have shared in one great experience, and through this experience we have grown into a single unit. For four years we have worked, studied, and celebrated together. We have rushed to class, felt apprehensive about exams, and been exhilarated before a vacation or after a victorious football game. All of these things and more we have clone as a single body. These activities and emotions are what constitute going to school. By belonging to the class of 1959 we have learned what it is to be part of a vital living group. Without all its members our class would not be the same. Each of us is an integral part of our class history. We entered Paulsboro as the youngest members of the student body. We were filled with anticipation and uncertainty as we strove to make ourselves a part of an already established organization. The first step in our climb towards our goal of unity was electing our class officers. We chose Harry Sparks, Roscoe Carter, Diane Chell, and April Villanova to lead us during this first year in a new frontier. With experience behind us and opportunity ahead we entered our sophomore year. As sophomores we chose Roscoe Carter, Elaine Snyder, April Villanova, and Ronnie DiNicola to lead us. Our first social undertaking was that of the Freshman- Sophomore Reception which proved to be a tremendous success. We were now a firm part of the P.H.S. student body. With eagerness and determination we entered our junior year. Roscoe Carter, Tom Cassidy, April Villanova and Diane Chell were chosen as our class officers. Here was a class willing to work and one capable of doing anything put before us. ...C if Ls X e X ' .ffl -x XL V 'X ...- ' Our Junior Play, A Little Haney, was both successful and enioyable. We gave the annual prom at the end of the school year which was, for the first time, an all night affair. One of the first of many important precedents set by the class of 1959. For three years we were building ourselves into a senior class worthy of Paulsboro High School. Now we have reached our goal- Don Lang, Tom Dudzinski, Lucy Wyatt, and April Villanova were chosen to lead us in our final year of triumph. Athletically, scholastically, and socially we led our school. Sparked by the inspiration and play of several senior boys, our football team won both the Colonial Conference and Group lll championships in South Jersey. The Alumni Dance in November was both entertaining and financially successful. We set two more precedents this year. First the yearbook colors were changed from the previous maroon and silver to our true school colors of red and white. Second- ly, there was the establishment of Senior Week from January 12 to January 16, which received great support from both students and faculty. The past four years have given each of us some memorable experiences which we will never forget. When it comes our turn to march at graduation in June we shall all be looking back with sadness at what we must leave behind. We shall leave Paulsboro High School with memories of four wonderful years of work, fun, and growing up. We gained more than academic knowledge, we have matured as individuals and are now prepared to set out on our various paths in the road of life. P.H.S. we sing to thee Alma Mater dear, Cherished will our memories be Of the hours spent here. Many of our boys have taken part in football, basketball, and the other maior sports. Our girls have participated in hockey, basketball, tennis, and cheerleading. Our great high school band also includes many sophomores. The campaign for electing the class otticers this year was very exciting. Sheryl Swed was chosen President, Robert Todd Vice-President: Connie Di Bona Secretary, and Lorraine Riccobono Treasurer. The Freshman-Sophomore Reception turned out very well because many of the students supported it. Enter- tainment and refreshments were provided and enjoyed. The Sophomore Magazine Drive was handled very capably by Miss Vonada. The total sales amounted to S4426.69. The secretaries appointed in the home- rooms were: Jean Cartagno, Toni De Frank, Alverna Field, Carole Hanel, Ruth Riccobono, Marianne Sadlas- kos, Sheryl Swed, and Donna Willis. Many honors were bestowed upon our players. Joel Gotchel, Willie DiTonno, Jim Shirk, and Walt Valesky re- ceived second team berths on the All S.J. Group Ill team.
