The Fireplace m the Park The early settlers of Paulsboro had bu1lt at tract1ve and SUl5SI'1Df1Hl houses Paulsboro con tlnued to be 1 town of homes Very many new houses have been bullt 111 the town durlng recent years Mr Stumpf s Home on Beacon Avenue The bulldmv wh1ch we called our own was constructed m 1916 The add1t1on on the rear of the mam structure was bu1lt 1n 1931 I recent years the Student Counc1l had land scaped the area 1n front of the bu1ld1ng pro v1d1nU add1t1onal walks and attractxve plants T e school hbrlry was a real center of the school All students were requlred to take four years of Enghsh and Envllsh teachers requ1red the students to make at least weekly V1S1Is to the l1brary Thls meant that everyone went to the llbrary About nlnety people could be seated there There were 3300 books 1n the llbrary About 25 students ass1sted the l1brar1an Students nn Conference m Hugh School Lnbrary The aud1tor1um part of the add1t1on made to the bulldmg 1n 1931 had 950 seats When the pupll populatxon reached the 1956 57 level xt became necessary for each assembly program to be repeated upper and lower classes havmg separlte assembly per1ods The audltorlum had an adequate stage and a publlc address system The cafeter1a accommodated about five hun dred students each day Two lunch per1ods were scheduled Pnze Wnnners m Home Econonucs The Home Econom1cs Department offered some mterestmg and helpful expenences The boys took much mterest 1n the1r Cookmg Club The g1rls often d1st1r1gu1shed themselves 1D projects ,-.AX A Beautnful Table A Q Q ,1- , 1 . , . 1 ' 3 , , . l ' -6 . . . . 9 1 1 . . . , . Paulsboro worked with five other districts in giving high school experience to girls and boys Not only did the school meet the needs of those who could come within its walls but rt extended to include pupils who were unable to come to the building Judy W1ll1HmS of West Deptford hid telephone connections with each class on hcr schedule She did her work attended classes by telephone and sent her papers in by her brother Vince H 23,1 if udy m class There were 1038 students in the high school 637 came from the districts of West Deptford East Greenwich Logan Greenwich and Glouces ter TOWI1Shlp Our town was 1n a real way the home town of all these students although the ones from sending districts brought with them a great loyalty to the places from which they came ,,..-pun- ' The Methodist Church The most familiar spot in our town was the Bank Corner the intersection of Broad and Delaware Streets Here the buses stopped On the corner across from the bank m front of the Methodist Church was the waiting place for buses going toward Camden In Paulsboro were churches of different faiths. On the corner of 7th and Beacon was St. John's Catholic Church and across the street the new Elementary Parochial School St john s Catholic Church The Paulsboro Library was on Broad Street a short distance from the bank The library was one of the early residences of the town donated to the city to be used for library purposes It was built in 1807 The stone was brought by barge from Pennsylvania The house had three floors The old fireplace gave much charm to one of the main rooms on the first floor The owner Mrs Harry Fish of Woodbury donated the building to Paulsboro in honor of her parents It was named The G1ll Public Library ease :wma mi? ,-4 :nga Massa..-sa-muah M awsiflvm was .a!mmwnym. The Gill Public Library Students were always welcomed at the library and many from all the schools went to find reference material and to take out books The hours were scheduled so that the library was open during the hours when the school librarxes were closed Some of the high school students living in West Deptford Township near Wood bury frequented the Woodbury Library Many civic minded people of our town realized the need for parks in the community Down near the river where there had once been extensive park space there remained an area for p1Cf11Ckl1'lg K - 9 1 5 , s .
