Or.soN, ri sident of the St d t C 1 I GEEdit fthP1 t I A X002 Qzufdfnw, Pfeuff, FCREWORD We, the class of 1956, prepared this, the nineteenth edition of the Pegasus, with great enthusiasm. We Caught a vision of the chance we had to give lasting pleasure to the students and to everyone associated with our School. We wanted our book to reflect our school life, but we wanted to present this life in a lofty manner, emphasizing the best features. We had once written a code for our school. We believed that this expressed the ideals of the students. We chose the code as the theme of our book. We looked up at the Cupola of our building and thought of this as a symbol of the highest level of our thinking. Our school, three times the winner of the Brooks-Irvine Sportsmanship award, has really tried to exemplify the principles of fairness and Compassion. As we learned our subyect matter we desired to learn other lessons too attItudes of helpfulness honesty generosity and brotherhood There were more students In our school than we ever before had The enrollment exceeded eleven hundred Many freshman students from Gloucester Township came Into the lower classes The high school welcomed these students and made every effort to help them to be happy and well ad1usted The class of 56 was deeply grateful to the parents the School Board the faculty and all the friends of the school who helped In making the year successful and the yearbook complete and emoyable TABLE CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM CALENDAR SENIORS SENIORS HOMEROOMS 12 13 15 44 45 46 CLASS HISTORY SENIOR BEST UNDERCLASSMEN IUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN SPORTS FOOTBALL BASKETBALL WRESTLING 485Z'Q 54 56 57 60 61 66 68 69 70 71 in fm HOCKEY BASEBALL TRACK TENNIS CHEERLEADERS CHEERLEADERS COLORCUARD MAJORETTES ls' ACTIVITIES QPEGASUS , KSNAPS STUDENT COUNCIL NATIONAL HONOR PLAYS MUSIC CLUBS ADVERTISEMENTS SOCIETY 78 79 84 85 86 87 88 95 I-11 j '111111iiii1i Zi -14 fl , ffl! It was a short walk from the bus to the door. There he was joined by school- mates living in town. The school code of conduct made courtesy the ruleg so, the students really helped one another. By the time the student reached his locker, he was in the midst of crowds of others assembling books and materials for the morning's work. On the way to the homeroom, he saw faculty advisers on duty. In his homeroom, his teacher greeted him, He waited for the attendance check, and then heard the Bible read- ing and the flag salute. If it chanced to be an assem- bly day, Tuesday, he joined the whole student body in the auditorium for a program. He sometimes went into the attendance office where late students reported, and where excuses for absence were submitted. On club days: Monday, Thursday, and Friday, he went to a meeting of his chosen interest group. If he needed help in changing a course, planning his future, or modifying his school life in any way, he went to the guidance office. If he distinguished himself in some special manner, Mr. Stumpf or Mr. Olson might call him to discuss his service and congratulate him. He could have found cooking classes, shop classes, typing classes in session, for the school, besides the college preparatory course, offered general and com- mercial courses. Gym, music, driver' education, first aid classes were all in progress. The nurse and the doctor were at hand in case of illness, and six tele- phones throughout the building made communication with the homes rapid and practical. As noon hour came on, delicious, nourishing food at a reasonable price was provided by the cafeteria, and every hall had a water cooler so that a fresh drink was at hand, In the halls were monitors to examine the passes granted by teachers when students went from place to place during the time classes were in session. Almost every kind of athletic activity was oifered from football in the fall to tennis in the late spring. Then at five-thirty or six o'clock the long halls were empty and silent, waiting for a new school day. Pearl Cadmus became well known because she was selected to go on a European tour with a student council group. After mid winter, underclass students could tell which people were juniors because the class rings came, and the juniors flashed them in the freshman and sophomore eyes. Those beautiful rings with the school door artistically designed upon them made the juniors feel that they had become an important part of P. H. S. The class dance with music by the Modern- aires was planned around an Autumn Leaves T theme. The committee made beautiful decora- tions for the gym. Their play, Lady, Be Good, directed by Mr. Cclofranson, brought praise from everyone. The assembly was Two Old-Fashioned Melodramas. The student body enjoyed this very much. Best of all was their great success in plan- ning and holding the Iunior-Senior Prom. The class of '56 was very grateful to the gracious host class. The Iunior Class could not have completed these activities successfully without advisers. They were Mrs. Setzer, Mrs. Bordner, Miss Mad- ciff, Miss Trick, Miss Shaffer, cmd Mr: Ridinger. When the second bell rang, classes passed through the halls. All juniors took American History. This group was Mr. Ridinger's Seventh Period Class. The class of '58, under the capable direc- tion of Miss Vonada, Mr. Lazenvick, Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Devonshire, Mrs. Peterman, Mrs. Molitor, Miss Lacey, Miss McGeady, and Mr. Peterman, had a very successful year. As their first major project, the class pre- sented their annual Sophomore- Freshman Reception. Ted Rutecki, Zoe Pappas, Ruth Willis, Dorothy Dunn, Diana Pascoe, Ianet Peo, Loretta Kushall, and Virginia DeAngelis provided the entertainment, which was enjoyed by everyone. The class sold more magazines than any other class in the history of Paulsboro High School. The highest salesmen of the year were Virginia Del-Xngelis, from 2075 Louise Laviano, from 208, and Iohn Siegrist, from 208. Homeroom 207 was highest in sales, and homeroom 208 had the highest percent- age of sales per person. This class used its selling ability to a great advantage. As a reward for their hard work, the magazine publisher presented the school with a full-length motion picture entitled Kill the Umpire! starring William Bendix. This sophomore class spent a busy year preparing for their future as upper classmen in Paulsboro High School. SOPHOMORES X5 OFFICERS FIRST ROW: T. Rurncxr, Presidentg L, Lnvmuo, Treasurer. PEGASUS EDITORS E, Hcrgenbcxrth, V, Lukosc- HIGH SALESMAN A. Giovanetti A new home for the Pegasus, thanks to Mr. Stumpf, Mr. Olson, our Board of Education, Mr. Yandach, Mr. Kessler, and all their helpers, we had it. It was a pleasant, sunny little office at the end of the south hall on the Main floor. Mr. Yandach built a large new table, and Mr. Kessler found a desk and chair, You' should have seen Ed Hagenbarth and Vicky Lukosavich work- ing efficiently in these new surroundings, All the incon- venience of carrying materials from one room to another was over. The Pegasus truly had a home. The students used to say that the busiest person in the school was Bob Muhlbaier. Bob said the hardest job in preparing the pictures was keeping people reminded to follow the schedule. Mr. Daniel surely was a patient person. Mr, Phiffer also contributed a great deal to our yearbook. He helped advise the Camera Club and helped provide pictures for the Pegasus. One of the most successful Saturday night dances of the year was The Flying Red Horse Hop, sponsored by Miss Lacey to help pay for pictures. The staff made more than a thousand Flying Red Horses to advertise the dance, Iack Otten, who drew the other pictures for the book, made the pattern for the horses. The staff was really grateful to Mrs. Daniels, Miss Weber, Miss Havens, Miss Lacey, and Mrs. Molitor who acted as advisers. They did not forget thanks to the rest of the faculty and the hundreds of students who helped to make this great edition of the Pegasus a success. PEGASUS TYPISTS FIRST ROW: N. Ladner, I. Why were students scurrying from room to room? The answer was obvious. The Paul- sentinel had arrived. The Paulsentinel gave the students news on Who's Who and What's What in P.H.S. The paper included feature articles, gossip, top-tunes, personal interviews, sports, car- toons, pictures, and advertisements. STUDENT COUNCIL The student council enjoyed a successful year under the leadership of Ronnie Dunk and Mrs. Lewis. The project for this year was the new juke box, first used at the Valentine Dance. They sold football programs, book covers, candy at the basketball games and wrestling matches, and spring concert tickets. The two conferences, one at Rutgers Univer- sity and the other at Lower Camden County Regional High School were the two main events of the year. Each year juniors and seniors were elected to the National Honor Society. Having achieved an average of eighty-five or above, they must have the qualities of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Beginning in his freshman year, each person strove to become a member cf this organization, as it was one of the greatest honors anyone could receive in high school. From the eligible people, the faculty selected the boys and girls who deserved to be members. The officers for this year were Ray Miller, Presidentg Mary Schmidt, Vice President, Sally Burns, Secretary, and Florence Lilly, Treasurer. There was an annual assembly in March to present these members, This candlelight ceremony was an initiation program which impressed everyone. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SENIORS FIRST ROW: H. Bruce, M.
