Pau.lsho'ro's Black Mana. Governor Meyner and Acting Masor joseph Mznnzte. LK 15911 .ilnlrilrn In 1954, too late in the year for last year's annual, Paulshoro celehrated its Golden Jubilee. In 1904 Crown Point and Billingsport separated from Greenwich Township and hecame Pauls' horo. The name was given in honor of Samuel P. Paul, an early settler. The celehration hegan on Friday, August 20, when Miss jessica Paz of the john Rohert Powers Model Agency, crowned Louise Oswald, Queen, and jack Fleming, King. They reigned over the juhilee during the week. The people of Paulshoro were proud to welf come the Governor of New Jersey, Robert E. Meyner. He arrived at two o'clock at the High School stadium on Sunday, August 22. Governor Meyner spoke upon the suhject The Third Great Freedom. He hegan hy saying: My text today is human freedom. There are three great freedoms to which men aspire, Cne is political liherty, The second is economic security. The third is spiritual tranquility. Governor Meyner then gave a short history of Paulshoro. A musical program hy the Pegasus Male Chorus followed. Barhara Burns was soloist for the chorus. A hahy parade took place on Monday, August 23, The parade moved from Buck Street School grounds and marched down Delaware Street to the Juhilee Corner, Billings Avenue and Delaf ware Street. Here they passed hefore the judges. Mrs. F. Frances Vanneman. the Chairman of the parade, gave each child in the parade some candy. Mrs. Harry Schmerling was the Chairman of a Gay Nineties Fashion Promenade which folf lowed. Rihhons were given as prizes. Civic Organization Day was held on Tuesf day, August 24. There was a comhined dinner meeting of the Exchange Cluh, Kiwanis Cluh. and the Lions Cluh in St. Paul's Methodist Church Social Hall. Several organizations held open house in their headquarters from eight o'clock until midnight. Wednesday. August 25, was set aside for Children's Day, sponsored hy the Safety Patrol and Little League with Mr. Wydenowski as Chairman. Starting at ten o'clock, there was a hasehall game at the Billingsport School grounds between the Little League Champions and the Little League All Stars. The Gloucester County Marhle Contest took place at one o'clock at the High School Athletic field. A Model Plane Exhihition followed, In the evening there was entertainment hy many well known personalities of Paulshoro and the surrounding communities. Mr. Marvin Bon' ner was the Chairman. Miss Doris Magin of Paulshoro was the Mistress of Ceremonies. On the next evening the Woodbury Barber Shop Quartet and Chorus gave a program. There was also a colorful Square Dancing Contest. Gift evening was held on Friday, August 27. This was sponsored hy the Greater Paulshoro Chamher of Commerce at the Juhilee Corner. Gne of the comical aspects of the juhilee conf cerned the medicine show and the arrest of 'lDr. Shaver, whose activities centered around the whiskcr growing campaign. Early in the summer. Mayor Billhrough issued a proclamation requiring every adult male to raise whiskers and authorizing the Keystone Cops to punish offenders. Mr. joseph vonder Hayden as the driver and Mr. Samuel Bundens as the guard went through the town in a patrol wagon, the Black Maria. They arrested and fined those who did not ohey the proclamation. The Speedhoat Regatta of the Paulshoro Assof ciation, the last day, attracted large crowds. Mr. Walter Stevenson, owner of Miss Bess, of Pauls' horo, won the first prize. The juhilee was closed with a heautiful display of fireworks. The Golden juhilee celehration committee conf sisted of Samuel W. McCall, Chairmang Kenf neth J, Adams: J. Marvin Bonner: David Rosen: Thomas Holland: Russell Irwin, Sr.g and Nichf olas P. Isaac, Sr. A very heautiful hooklet commemorating the ,Iuhilee was prepared. A Paulshoro High School student, Diana Hagenharth, had the honor and privilege of writing the history of the horough forthe hooklet.
