CABLE........................Advisor 1970 VANGUARD Dorman High School Spartanburg, South Carolina Volume VI Our Dorman Cavaliers display thoir athletic ability in all phases of school sports. 1970, a new decade and a new beginning A baby cries, a new life begins. Certainly all babies cry, but this minute combination of cells has reason to cry. He has not felt the warmth of a mother’s touch or the tender love of a family. All he feels is the slick curved walls of a test tube that has served him as a cocoon serves a silkworm. Today, chocked full of wild, way-out ideas, innovations, and new ways of liv- ing—the world is bursting into an age of change! Changes readily accepted and equally repelled. Imagine living in an era when man is so near to the impossible dream; the dream of reaching the unreach- able star and going even a step further and actually walking on the moon. DHS challenges its students and all mankind. Neon lights reflecting colors of red, orange, and yellow on the silhouette of a boy and girl walking arm in arm along a deserted street, the sudden appearance of a long haired boy in the classroom, mini-shirts found on the young and young at heart, riots, and revolutions on the uni- versity campuses—examples of an ever changing age and the eager desire for an individual to be an individual. Love, peace, and success—the sides of an equilateral triangle of life. A life filled with the hope of every individual to ac- cept the new ways of living and to achieve the challenges facing today’s youth. The challenge of Dorman High School is to unite its students in learning together, working together, and facing changes to- gether with the hope of an even better tomorrow. A messy beginning to a beautiful finish of Dor- man’s additional classrooms. Dorman students prove the ability to be Amer- ica’s leaders of tomorrow! These are not the hammers of Justice, but justice prevails at Dorman, Theme Opening..........................2 Student Life...........................6 Administration and Faculty ... 22 Classes...............................40 Activities...........................102 Advertisements.......................162 Memoriam.............................193 Epilogue.............................204 5 Them commodes give us trouble every year! JACK PHILLIPS Advisor During the year the Student Council served the Dorman students through various activities. A huge Christmas tree was deco- rated by the officers and displayed in the school lobby. The Student Council con- ducted a drive to collect canned foods to be given to Dorman’s maintenance staff. Students were supplied with directories and parkas carrying the Dorman emblem. The annual blue horse drive was once again sponsored by the Council for the purpose of financing the college education of a worthy senior. The installation of the Student Council members was held during assembly. This was the first formal induction of Student Council members. 105 Students recognize Cavalier Staffs hard work EDITORS. Kathv Kirby, Co-Editor; Ann Poteat, Business Manager; Margaret Lynch, Co-Editor; Mrs. Beverly Knight, Advisor. Throughout the school year the Cavalier endeavored to keep the students well in- formed on the news and views of the students, faculty, and administration con- cerning a variety of topics. The Cavalier also retained its stature as a superior newspaper in state, regional, and national competition. An honor given to the paper because of its exemplary per- formance in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association was its own page of editorials in the February issue of the National Scholastic Press Review. In trying to live up to its motto, “The pen is mightier than the sword,” the Cava- lier did much to further the image of Dorman High School throughout the com- munity, state, and nation. STAFF. Junior Editors It actually began early in 1969 with the selection of a staff capable of doing the job. Then the few weeks of summer vaca- tion were spent in study and preparation at various conferences and in soliciting advertisements. With better developed minds and a few more dollars, we began the actual months of long hours, hard work, dead ends, disappointments, and deadlines. . . . sketching a ladder . . . arranging and rearranging a dummy . . . stretching copy . . . making headlines no less than 42 picas and no more than 46 . . . begging for more ads and trying to collect for the ones we had been promised . . . experimenting with our own camera . . . trying to actually make this a year of change . . . trying to provide space for R. D. Anderson Voca- tional School . . . working while everyone else enjoyed the snow . . . indexing . . . extending deadlines until the very last minute. We give very special thanks to Mrs. L. E. Gable, our advisor, who served as our typist and second mother throughout the year’s hard work. As always Mr. Bob Willis, our photographer, worked over- time to help us meet our deadlines. Distributive Education is part of the total school program designed to train students for careers in marketing and distribution. Such careers include employment in whole- saling, retailing, and service selling occu- pations. Distributive Education also serves as a background for college-bound students interested in business administration. The Dorman DECA students began the year by attending the Sales Jamlx ree at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium in Octo- ber. The students were invited as special guests of the Spartanburg Merchants Asso- ciation. During the school year each DE student participated in Job Interview Contest, Sales Demonstration Contest, Speech Contest, and Ad-Layout Contest. The winners of these school contests competed on the district level in February. Each year the highlight of DECA activi- ties is the attendance at the State Leader- ship Conference in Columbia. 113 Future Teachers encourage teaching profession The main function of the Future Teachers of America was to promote the teaching career among interested students at Dor- man. Through the club juniors and seniors gained information and experience about careers in the field of education. FTA, with a membership of thirty, held regular meetings each six weeks of the school term and was represented at state and district meetings. Highlights of the year's activities were the participation in American Education Week and the teas for the faculty in the autumn and spring. Some students also assisted teachers in classroom duties and designed bulletin boards. ADVISOR AND OFFICERS. JOYCE GRANT CLEVELAND February 1, 1930 September 18, 1969 That one never stops the process of learning was illustrated in the life of Mrs. Joyce Cleveland. During the summer of 1969, she completed requirements for her Master’s Degree. Shortly after the completion of tnis work, she was admitted to the hospital where the diagnosis of her illness required her to take a year’s leave from Dorman High School. She realized only a part of her dream—the coveted degree was received, but the desire to teach after the completion of the degree was never fulfilled. Those whom she taught in past years, those scheduled to have had Mrs. Cleveland for a teacher this year, and all who knew her were shocked by her untimely death. Mrs. Cleveland was an inspiration to those whom she taught and to those with whom she taught. May the life that she lived before each of us be an incentive for all to pursue the learning process and study “to show ourselves approved.” Truly, many have excelled in their studies in higher education because they were inspired by Joyce G. Cleveland. 193 Specialized training in many fields familiarizes students Mr. Abercrombie supervises Dorman students’ progress in masonary. Mr. Fine instructs students at R. D. Anderson Vocational School in building construction. for future vocations Good food preparation begins at the vocational school with Miss Jane Williams instructing. All electric typewriters make typewriting for these girls a pleasure. R. D. Anderson provides experience in the field of textiles. Maxicoats and dresses paraded the corridors be- side the ever changing miniskirts. Dorman was no longer confined to its traditional curricida hut was united with other area schools to produce R. D. Anderson Vocational School. R. D. Anderson opened new horizons to Dorman’s ever changing ideas. With the addition of new classrooms, Dorman con- tinued to grow. Victory! Spartan High was de- feated. Truly, this started an age iof change! I The 1970 staff hopes that this edition of the Vanguard will serve as a storehouse of memories and past changes of Dorman High School. May this inspire others to strive for even higher goals and future successes. Alma Mater Hail, Alma Mater! Praises proudly sing Of all the memories our school days bring. Founded on dignity.
