Presented by THE VANGUARD STAFF DORMAN HIGH SCHOOL SPARTANBURG. SOUTH CAROLINA Volume II Mathematics utilizes modern methods to develop precise work. Students practice art of dressmaking. Three typing courses are offered at Dor- man. Typing I and II for those who are inter- ested in secretarial work, Personal Typing for those who want to learn to type for their own use. The purpose of the home economics classes is to encourage democracy in home and com- munity, thereby improving personal, family, and community living. Members of the woodshop are expected to complete one project each six weeks. Fruit bowls, rod and reel cases, gun racks, and book cases are among the completed projects. The mathematics program meets the needs of all students in the fields of algebra, geome- try, business mathematics, trigonometry, and calculus. Through diligent practice, students acquire the skill of typewriting Dorman's Curriculum Provides Mr. Cathcart instructs students in woodshop. 2 Miss O'Shields aids homemakers in the preparation of a balanced meal. Preparation For College And Mechanical Drawing students prepare for career in drafting. Vocational classes have proven to be a vital phase of any school's curriculum. Enjoy- ment as well as learning is found in each class. Home Economics is a necessary course for any girl desiring someday to become a housewife. Cooking as well as sewing stimu- late many girls at Dorman to realize their potential. As stated by our former President Kennedy, physical fitness is not only good for the body but also is essential for the mind to work properly. Though only an hour a day is devoted to exercise and fun in the physical education classes instructed by Mrs. Kay Parris, each girl receives an added enjoyment to a regu- lar school day. Mechanical Drawing courses offer one the knowledge necessary to compete in a chang- ing, progressive world. Without this course, many of today's exclusive buildings and bridges would not be available. Science prepares those interested in ad- vanced learning in the field of biology, chemistry, and physics and allows them to build a good foundation for future use. Science interest is sparked by experiments. Physical fitness is part of everyday routine in physical education. 3 Physical education develops coordination and promotes competitive spirit. Mr. Phillips aids student teacher, Mr. Beck, in preparation for a career in teaching. English literature is expounded in Creative English. Student Teachers Observe And Practice In Class Only a few of the many ways that Dorman helps the student to grow are pictured here. For those students who possess the ability to write, a course in Creative Writing taught by Mrs. Joyce Cleveland is offered. This is one of the best courses that DHS offers to help one along the road to a successful writing career. Mr. Phillips was only one of the many who helped train college students in the field of practice teaching. This practice gives the prospective teacher a bird's eye view of what his future career holds. One of the most enjoyable sports during physical education is volleyball. Coaches Curtis Powell and Wade Corn instruct in this field of study. Biology students find microscopic analysis guite enjoyable. Biology students experiment, observe, and analyze. FT A officers Sandra Gwinn, Linda Smith, Becky Walden, and Terrie Lanford fetes retired teacher. FHA Officers, left to right: Carole Hardin, Margaret Fleming, Laura Bryan, Linda Watkins. Standing: Mrs. Frances Dover, Adviser: Miss Roberta O'Shields. Adviser; Paulette Tiilotson and Debbie Mitchell discuss year's work. Club Projects Benefit, Complement School Life Shown here are only four of the many clubs or organizations which make up part of the activities at DHS. The Key Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Spartanburg, is advised by Mr. Dewey Gentry. During the current year they compiled and sold student directories which have proved very helpful to students and teachers at Dorman. The Cavalettes, advised by Mrs. Charlene Yarborough, is the only club sponsored solely by the school. They have sold football pro- grams and advance tickets to athletic events. The Future Homemakers of America is an organization which encourages individuals to improve personal, family, and community living. Mrs. Daisy Beam is adviser for the Future Teachers of America. Monthly meetings of this club help to increase the students' knowl- edge of the art of teaching through well planned and presented programs. Key Club officers Jacob Gregory, Bruce Whelchel, David Frey, and Chick Gosnell sell Student Directory to Linda Williams. Cavalette officers sell advance tickets to ball game. Left to Right: Becky Walden, Debra Earnhardt, Jackie Brown. Band members prepare for stiff inspection before public performance. Russell Walden, Ronnie Thornton, and Kirk McKeown collect canned goods and toys to spread Christmas cheer. Council Reactivates Student Participation Christmas season was an active time at Dorman. The Student Council, backed by the faculty and student body, started the season by erecting and decorating a huge tree in the lobby. Boxes of food and toys were collected and distributed to those less fortunate. Participating in the city's annual Christmas parade, the Marching Cavaliers underwent stiff inspection in readiness for the parade. Another example of Christmas giving was that of the Anchor Club. The members unani- mously voted to help four underprivileged children. Pennants were sold to help provide money for this project. The true Christmas Spirit prevailed throughout the school. One of the many projects of the Anchor Club was selling pennants. Officers left to right are Annette Collins, Cheryl McGaha, Elaine Anderson, and Peggy Malone. Buying pennant is member Vicki Outz. The Marching Cavaliers display precision in performance at the Spartanburg Annual Christmas Parade. Enthusiasm Sparked By College Representatives Juniors and Seniors began seriously think- ing of college entrance requirements when representatives from various colleges visited the campus to talk with them. An impressive ceremony was held by the National Honor Society when new members were inducted. Mr. Boggs presented them with pens and membership cards. A welcome part of every school day is the lunch period when teachers and students enjoy a delicious meal. The National Honor Society inducts new members. The impres- sive ceremony inspires others to attain a higher scholastic average. Teachers enjoy break from classroom during lunch. Students attentively listen to Converse College representative explain requirements, facilities, and college life. Alan Hughes, President of Interact Club, and Kirk McKeown, Student Council President, perform the Interact Club's daily task of flag raising. The flagpole was used at Camp Wadsworth during World War I. Receiving class rings brings not only seniority but also new responsibilities. President of the P-TA, Mr. O. O. Knight, enjoys a duel between the Fighting Cavaliers and opponents at a Friday night football game. West View Ruritan Donates Historical Flagpole Upon hearing that the West View Ruritan Club was to erect a flagpole, U. S. Senator Donald Russell advised that the school would be given a flag which had flown over the Nation's capitol. This was a very welcome addition to the Dorman campus. Many ardent fans cheered the Cavaliers on to victory or encouraged them in their losses. For days after rings were received, seniors compared them for size, color, and beauty. The lunchroom portrays the use of rectan- gular, trapezoidal, and round tables placed together or separately. This is only one phase of the very modern furnishings in our school. Dorman lunchroom portrays modern furniture and building design. Tardy students must check into office before reporting to class. Mr. Jesse S. Bobo addresses Student body during National Honor Society program. Educator Urges Students To Reach Higher Goals The various scenes of activities and every- day routine at Dorman depict only a part of the busy 180 days of school life. The office at Dorman is a place of hustling each morning as students check in, attend- ance boards are collected, and the days announcements are typed. In addition to the speech of Mr. J. S. Bobo at its first induction ceremony, four senior members explained the cardinal principles of the National Honor Society—leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Conclud- ing the program was a candle-lighting serv- ice centered around the flaming torch. Football always plays an important role in any school. A group of dedicated fans organized by the PTA made up a caravan to all out of town games. A fee of 50 f per student was charged for transportation. This money was turned over to the school to aid in the beautification program. As a climax to the 1965 season a football banquet was held honoring everyone who had helped to make the season the success that it was. Fighting Cavaliers led by quarterback Tommy Owens struggle for first down. Varsity and Junior Varsity enjoy annual football banquet. Mr. Bobby McDaniel’s chemistry class experiments with laboratory equipment in the electrolysis of water. Beginning in the physical education class, boys eagerly work- out in order to make the team. Weight lifting has proved most helpful in building strong athletes. Experimentation And Practice Prove Worthwhile Physics class experiments with free-fall apparatus to determine the acceleration of gravity at the location of the physics lab. During a practice session, Coach Corn instructs the football team in the tactics of ball handling, blocking, tackling, and running. 10 Hours of diligent toil go into the planning of a year's work at Dorman. ALMA MATER Hail, Alma Mater! Praises proudly sing Of all the memories our school days bring. Founded on dignity, Honor, and liberty, Gave knowledge to us all. Hail to Dorman High. FOREWORD The road of life is a winding one which never seems to end. If our journey down this road is to be successful, we must spend many hours in preparation. Even though our plans may be perfect and our needs sufficient, we will still be confronted with many detours, red lights, and stop signs. Although these obstacles are sometimes frightening and dis- appointing because we are unprepared for them, we are fortunate to have the faculty, the administration, our principal, our parents, our ministers, and our friends constantly by our sides to guide us. With so many to help us, we should never be afraid or feel alone when these failures and trials overcome us. We should always remember that if we'll only walk on with hope and faith in our hearts WE'LL NEVER WALK ALONE. Here at school it seems that our disappoint- ments and failures usually come at the same time. Although these may merely be stop signs which, if encountered with faith and determination, we can easily overcome. They seem to make matters worse, but they really do not because they come for a purpose. We learn by our mistakes and making errors or experiencing failures truly strengthens our minds and makes us want to try harder and put forth our best efforts. These words of the poet seem most fitting: There is a destiny that makes us brothers; none goes his way alone. TRUSTEES Our administration is charged with the tremendous responsibility of giving every student the best edu- cation possible. To operate an effective high school requires the concerted efforts of many people and each of those charged with this responsibility performs most capably. The top policy makers for all District Six schools form the Board of Trustees. These men represent the people of our school district. They are men dedicated to the task of educating the students in our school and others in this District. Mr. Paul M. Dorman, our superintendent, has shown outstanding leadership in handling the affairs of our District. It is his desire that we always climb ambi- tiously toward the top of the ladder of success. Mr. L. E. Gable, business manager, very efficiently performs his role of taking care of the buying and other business affairs in the district. Good administrators need good assistants. Mrs. Mar- guerite Hayes, our secretary; Mr. J. T. Mabry, our bookkeeper, and Mr. John Tillotson, director of instruc- tion, have always performed their duties untiringly. These people who make up the Administrative Staff of School District Six have helped us to realize that the words of the songwriter “You'll Never Walk Alone are true in every respect. County Board of Education Members MR. J. S. BOBO MR. D. R. FRYE 17 To the seniors of '66: History may well reflect that the high school graduates of the six- ties in large measure determined the civilization of the twenty-first century. In this decade of unlimited op- portunity it cannot be said I didn't have a chance. Your graduation, a step of end- ing or a step of beginning, is a landmark for each of you. I trust the foundation is secure and this is a launchpad to a successful life—a successful life of your choice, as a homemaker, farmer, teacher, doctor, lawyer, engineer, or secretary. The faculty and staff wish for you a full life of understanding, competence, and progress. The real worth of Dorman High will not be measured by archi- tectural design but rather by its impact on the lives of its gradu- ates and the intellectual and spiritual values for which it stands. I shall follow your separate ca- reers with real personal interest. —DOYLE W. BOGGS. MR. DOYLE W. BOGGS Principal MR. ALLEN O. CLARK Assistant Principal Dorman High is now well into its second year of operation and already it is beginning to have an im- pact upon the local and state levels in academic and extracurricular activities. The 1964-1965 school year was spent consolidating two student bodies and solv- ing many problems that came as a result of this edu- cational progress. Education cannot be evaluated in terms of one or two years, but no one doubts for a moment the excellent opportunities, the challenges and the brightness of the future for the students who are privileged to attend Dorman High School. Dorman High's destiny as a quality secondary edu- cational institution is assured. Surely, all who reside in Spartanburg County School District Six must be proud. —ALLEN O. CLARK. MRS. A very efficient coaching staff led by Coach Wade A. Corn, molded the inexperienced boys into a challenge for any AAA team. Assisting Coach Corn were Coaches Curtis Powell and Ernie Redd, line and end coaches, respectively. At the beginning of the season Coach Corn made the statement: With our schedule, we are going to have to play up to our potential in every game to improve last year's record, but with a few breaks I am sure well win some ball games. The record of 3-5-3 was an improvement over the former year. Though we were not always victorious so far as scores were con- cerned, every grid man displayed the quali- ties of a champion during the entire season. One of the highlights of the season was when Principal Doyle W. Boggs awarded Coach Corn with a trophy after his 100th vic- tory in the coaching field. All players were commended for the fine spirit of team work and cooperation which they displayed. When a coach makes the statement, I would like to have each of these boys for my own, one can be sure that the team is made up of boys with determination, high character, and a true Dorman spirit. 26 FIRST ROW: Bobby Kelly, Steve Evatt, Steve West. Under the coaching of Mr. Ernie Redd, the team was scheduled to compete with Lancaster, Greer, Union, Byrnes, Wade Hampton, Spartanburg, and Gaffney. The competition was to be in sprints, distance runs, and relays. Sprints included the 100-yard dash, 200- yard dash, 440-yard dash, and the high and low hurdles. Distance runs were the 880-yard run and the mile run. High jump, pole vault, broad jump, shot put, and the discus throw were part of the field events. At the time that the VANGUARD went to press plans were for the team to hold its meets at Wofford College, to participate in the Regional Track Meet, the State- Record Relay Finals, State AAA Preliminaries, and State AAA Finals. Coached by Mr. Randy Mahaffey, the team is made up of boys from grades nine through twelve. At the time the VANGUARD went to press, matches were scheduled with Union, Greenville, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, and Gaffney. A Calendar of Events was a project for the Student Council with its major ob- jective to keep the Student Body informed of the dates of the individual club meetings and other events of importance or interest. A clean-up campaign, sponsored by the Student Council, emphasized the importance of cleanliness around the school. Committees appointed by the executive council were in charge of decorating the lobby and cafeteria for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. One of the major activities undertaken by the Stu- dent Council was that of collecting boxes of canned foods for the janitorial and cafeteria workers. National Honor Society Emphasizes Leadership The National Honor Society has greatly enhanced the role and function of education on the secondary school level. It has created an enthusiasm for scholar- ship, encouraged service in school activities, prompted leadership, and developed character in students all across the nation. The Dorman Chapter of the National Honor Society has tried to uphold these four objectives—character, scholarship, leadership, and service—in the things that it has done. This year the members have undertaken such tasks as writing a handbook and acting as guides for guests. In doing these things the members of this society have shown that recognition and honor carry with them obligation. This is the basic element by which this chapter functions. OFFICERS. Last year, the newspaper was the only paper in South Carolina to win the Medalist rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The Cavalier also won the David A. Tillinghast Award, presented annually by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association and the Greenville News to the paper making the most important contribution to its school. Coverage has been expanded this year, as the staff, composed of 30 students published nine issues rather than the eight produced in 1965. Publishing the nine issues was the staff's major activity this year, although they played an important part in the organization of the Quill and Scroll. Through hard work, the staff has lived up to its motto: The pen is mightier than the sword. The Cavalier has done much to build the image of Dorman throughout the community, state, and nation. The Cavalier strives to uphold the standards set in the past and continues to spread the name of Dorman across the nation. CAVALIER STAFF OFFICERS AND ADVISER. Specifically, an individual de- velopment of confidence in oneself and his work, a cooperative spirit, and a love for country life are the main purposes. It also builds character, trains one for useful citizenship, and fosters patriotism. Improvements in the knowledge of farming create an interest and a development of the best farming occupation. Besides improving the farm home and its surroundings through this knowledge, the encouragement and the practice of thrift and the improvement in scholarship are two more examples of the FFA's purposes. The chapter has been represented outstandingly in the Piedmont Interstate Fair. Two chapter members received trips to the Kansas City National Convention for their outstanding showmanship. The Dorman Band displayed tremendous school spirit this year. In preparation for the school year, the Dorman High Band spent a week in August 1965, at Camp Greystone in North Carolina. This time was spent in improving the band's marching and playing ability. Throughout the school year the band performed at the Dorman football games and pep rallies. It has also participated in the Piedmont Interstate Fair Band Con- test, Spartanburg Tech graduation exercises, Clemson Band Day, and several Christmas parades. Six Dorman bandsmen were selected to one of the 1966 South Carolina All-State Bands. One of the projects of the band was selling the new official Dorman decals. The Dorman Band is a military organization. Each member is classified by rank from private to captain. This type of organization has proved to lead to a better functioning musical organization. Singing Cavaliers Represent Dorman On WSPA-TV Joe Peeler, Chorus President and Miss Mary Frances Gosnell, Adviser, plan year's work. Vocal music is a part of our Fine Arts program. All harmony and theory is not only learned but is also put into practice. The classes are divided into a mixed chorus, a boys' chorus, a girls' chorus, madrigal singers, a sextette, a quartette, and a mixed ensemble. The best of these make up the traveling choir known as the Singing Cavaliers. They appear before civic groups, television, and in churches of the community. The entire music classes perform in assembly and on concerts. In our first year as a singing group at Dorman, we ranked as superior in the state in our efforts as soloists, ensembles, and choruses. The music program at Dorman High prepares stu- dents for community and college life. The pleasure derived from music has been enjoyed and shared by everyone at Dorman High. When school started in August, the staff selected a theme and began the hectic days of typing and photographing. Annual deposits were collected until Christmas Holidays. After spend- ing several afternoons working on it, the final draft went off to the printers. The staff is indebted to Mr. Robert Willis, photogra- pher; Mr. Ed O'Cain, who encouraged us when the going was rough, the faculty, who cooperated with us when pictures were being taken, and Mrs. L. E. Gable, our adviser, for her patience and helpfulness. The annual staff has earnestly tried to make this year's VANGUARD a book to be remembered. We sincerely hope that it will be cherished in the days to come as a keepsake of high school days. CO-EDITORS: Linda Williams and Sandra Gwinn. JUNIOR EDITOR: Becky Walden; SENIOR EDITOR, Cindy Posey. 61 And The Sweet Silver Song Of A Lark .. . With registration on August 17, our big year began. As we reported to classes on August 26, we encountered new courses of study which better prepared us for college or career. Three fields of study were avail- able—college preparatory, vocational, or business. The usual check was made to be sure that we were meeting the requirements of 16 units for high school diplomas. The first big day for us as a class was in early September when, during the usual ceremony, we received our high school rings This was truly a red-letter day for us. Our first report cards brought tears of joy or sorrow as we were graded from A to F and advised by our teachers to keep up the good work or dig deeper. Then suddenly our egos were somewhat saddened as we began experiencing the last time for such things as athletic contests, pep meetings, cheerleading, and assembly. Now we were wishing that these high school days could be lengthened. Our time had come to move out and make room for those who were to follow us. In the past twelve years we have been alone very few times. Someone has always been near to encourage us onward. As we leave Dorman High School we say a sincere thank you to the administration and to our teachers for guiding us thus far. From here, what we as individuals receive from life depends upon our determination to succeed. We shall, however, WALK ON WITH HOPE IN OUR HEARTS. LEFT TO RIGHT: STANLEY AMOS. Treasurer: CINDY POSEY. The troubles and trials which we have encountered and the hard work which we have put forth finally will have an enlightening significance as we begin our journey on the challenging highway of life. One day we will detour back to this book and to the memories which its covers enclose. We will surely know that the theme, You'll Never Walk Alone, has a truthful meaning. For the underclassmen, the words will remain, and they, too, will know that, regardless of the situation, one never walks alone! 54 .'.Sivy
