Pirates Are Winners 1ForJ Fourth Straight Year This time it was a field goal with 20 seconds left in the season that allowed the football Bucs of '77 to finish at 5-4 and continue Pattonville's winning tradition for the fourth straight year. A crowd of loud and loyal Pirate fans was on hand at the Friday night game in Granite City to see the team topple South's Warriers 9-6. It was a happy ending to a tough season in which the Pirates had to fight for every win. The Bucs began the season by shutting out Riverview and Normandy but then it was up against the powerful Hazelwoods. The West game was close but Central and East were overwhelming. A last minute triumph over McCluer's Comets brightened a cold and windy Homecoming and the following week Ritenour's Homecoming was ruined by the Bucs on another late field goal. But then it was the running of McCluer North's unstoppable Bob Meyer which did the Pirates in, setting up the last game excitement. The Pirate defense shone throughout the season allowing a total of only 12 points in the five winning games. All four losses came at the hands of teams which were ranked in the area top-ten. Linebacker Brad Gans edged Jim Koch out in a tight race for Headhunter, breaking Jim Hunicke's season record for defensive points, while defensive back Neal Jordan set a school record with six interceptions, Jim Parran, leading rusher, and Rick Allen, best blocker, led the offense. f 1.. . ...., .. .1 K A x t .vti rrgi. is . sPiraas 7 Pirates Hazelwood East 1 l Pirates..
