.gi ' . an DING-DONG, scHooL's BEGUN-Farsi day of school brings exciting chatter about summer vacations as every- one gathers on the patio before classes begin. -dan ... 1? Hrighf 17 yhts 90011 an 'Returning to school in September for the first day created many different kinds of feelings. Seniors arrived serene in the knowledge that this year They are VlP. Juniors came with grateful hearts that they are no longer lonely sophomores, Scared sophomores scuttled about-torn between the fear of the mighty seniors and the thought of all the new teachers and subiects. For football boys, band members, and drill team girls, school really began weeks before September l. They started preparing for a big football season early in August. Some had not seen their friends since school was out in May and tried to brief each other on all that had occurred during the summer months. September meant real excitement, for the football season began early. The first pep rally inspired all with the spirit of the Stingarees-a spirit that remains with all the student body-even long after graduation. Each pre-game evening, VHites attend a poster party where posters are rrade to iinx the opponent. On game days each loyal Sting ioins in the hexing by wearing red and white and the appropriate items to hex the opposing team. Seniors soon discovered how much more is required of them to maintain their lofty station in life. Clubs organized or reorganized, and officers were chosen to serve for the year. Various forms of initiation stunts were performed by the new members. School pictures were made and everyone waited impatiently to see his like- ness. A touch of color was added to brighten the mug shots, and the improvement seemed to please everyone. Annual staffers continued selling ad- vertisements for the 1960 STINGAREE. The sale had begun during the summer months, so, therefore, the seniors and iuniors were well in the swing of it. Statfers began the tremendous iob of taking pictures and preparing copy for their various sections. THE VlCTORIAN'S new staff finds that getting a complete newspaper out on time is quite a iob, and the halls of VHS buzz with reporters searching for news. This school year marked the begin- ning of the noon devotionals. At l2:00 each day every person on the campus reverently pauses for a prayer of thanksgiving offered by the Student Council chaplain. Student Council representatives were chosen by an election held through- out the school. Representatives were selected from each English class and representatives-at-large were chosen from the senior and iunior classes. Still more precious is the arrival of the treasured Senior Ring. Each senior shows superiority and prominence with the gold ring worn so proudly on his finger. Also relished by every senior for years to come is the cap and gown picture of l959'60 which they receive. THE THItfJKER -Physics and algebra teacher, Mr. Wayne Davis, ponders deeply over the atomic theory or perhaps his new students as he stands on duty the first day of school. 1 an FT.
