Griddvrs T For the first t'me in the school's history, Victoria High placed a player on an All Ar er'can team. Senior Guard Larry Sanders was named to the l959 Prep All American fourth team by the Oklahoma City Wigwam Wfsemen ot America from 6,005 nominations receTyed from coaches, scouts, and sportswriters over the country. This made Sanders eligible tor Dldv in the All American Prep Football classic scheduled for August provided he met some other reouirerrents. Be- sides this high honor, Larry was placed on the All State first tear'- bythe Fort Worth Star-Telegram. This school had never had an all- state first str'ng souadman either. Also, this Vt-lite was given recog- nition by the Waco Herald Tfbune which placed hirn on the second All-State team and by tne Texas Sportswriters Association which gave him honorable mention on their team. Coaches of District I5- AAAA named Sanders along with teammates Tackle Lawrence McEl- roy and Tailback Torr'm'e Pearson to the tirst string all district team. Besides his all-district recognit'on, McElroy was named to the all- South Texas first squad by the Kingsville Record and honorable men- tion by the Texas Sportswriters as well as an honorable mention spot in the national ratings. Tommie Pearson was the district's leading scorer as well as the leading ground gainer tor the season. Center Diego Rojas was named to the all district second team and was given honorable mention on the Kingsville paper's All-South Texas squad. Finch Burriss also gained honorable mention honors on the South Texas team as a fullback. Five Stingarees were recognized as all-district honorable mention players. Guard Jerry Smith, Tackle Danny Yarbrough, Wingback Rrichard Beller, and Ends Joe Hutchins and Fred McCoy made up t at list. Senior Jerry Smith was given this school's coveted Santleben Award by the l959 Stingaree team. This is given in recognition of a player's value to the team and sportsmanship. Jerry was also chosen to play in the annual School-boy North- South game which will be in Dallas, August 5. Naturally, he will play for the South, ln the words of Coach Gordon Wood, This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a high school football player not excepting being chosen on the All-State team. Vicroria's defense shown as never before as lhe Sfingarees wenf on lo lfe class AAAA semi-finalfsf Por? Highly ranked Jefferson of San Anfonio fell I4-6 and if looked as If Coach Wood's boys were heading for fhe big lime.
