Three of the players made Girls All- Star basketball. The two co-captains, Donna Harris and Renee Bailes, were the only seniors on the team. Miss Dowdy and her dollies share the victory. 17 The Clubs got off to a good start by making new plans for the coming year. Some Patrick Henry students partici- pated in a play given by the Liberty Drama Club. The play was entitled “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” “How To Succeed in Business” The Patrick Henry Band, Let- tergirls. Majorettes Junior Varsity, and Varsity Cheer- leaders all participated in the Ashland Rescue Squad Parade held in October of 1973. Va leei O Miss Renee Bailes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Meredith Bailes was crowned 1973 Homecom- ing Queen during the half-time activities on October 26. 20 The 1973 Homecoming activities were held on the weekend of Oct. 26- 27. During half-time of the game there was a parade of floats and the princesses were an- nounced. Donna Ban- ton was Maid of Honor and Karen Toombs was Senior Princess. The Junior and Sophomore princesses were Patsy Traylor and Valerie Morris respectively. To climax the evenings activities the Patroits went on to defeat Ports- mouth 30-0. The ac- tivities ended with the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night. Homecoming ’73 Before the homecoming game this year a parade was held with floats sponsored and made by different organizations and clubs at school. The first place win- ner was the FFA, who best depicted the theme, “Anchor the Admirals.” The FT A took second place with the float they designed. 22 •r. Intramural Basketball During basketball season, intramural basketball was played during activity period. Guys who were not members of the Varsity or J.V. squads played for their res- pective classes. In the tournament the Juniors defeated the Sophomores and the Seniors clinched the championship as they won over the Juniors. 23 Students Break From Grind . . . To break away from the daily routine many students participated in various extra-curricular activities and class projects. The Creative English class staged a film for competition in the Central Virginia Region Young Filmakers’ Contest sponsored by W.C.V.E. (Channel 23). The title of the film was Dictum Familiae and it won second place in the contest. The Drama Club held several assemblies during activ- ities periods in which several members of the club and members of the audience acted out pantomimes. The Administration sponsored a sock-hop during one of the activity periods. 24 Club Tappings . . . On the 7th of November, 1973, 50 students were honored by being tapped into The National Honor Society and the Beta Club. New members were tapped according to academic success, leader- ship ability, extra-curri- cular activities and school spirit. After the tapping ceremony, a re- ception was held for the new members and their parents. 25 rail Awards Assembly The Fall Awards Assembly was held to honor out- standing members of football, cross country, and girls’ basketball. Randy Lewis, Stuart Mallory and Ricky Latney received top honors in football. In cross country, Overton Harris, Scott Hutchinson, and Ellis Baugham were chosen as outstanding runners. Among the girls, Priscilla Woody, Penny Stevens and Renee Bailes were selected “District All-Stars.” Patriots Streak to Goals . . . In 1973, as in the past, the Patriots were a tournament team. The Patriots took fifth place this year with George Howard making All Tournament Team. The Patriots record was 7-9. Mike Barton was the high scorer with an average of 13.0 points per game. Patriots Bounce On . . . J.V. Basketball The spirit for the teams was excellent. Classes competed with a campaign contest, to show who was the most enthusiastic. The sophomore class won the contest. 28 “Natural High” and SPARK Talent Show . . . A true highlight of the Patrick Henry Chorus was its presentation of “Natural High” which was pre- sented in December as a special Christmas pro- gram. In February, the SPARK provided a special op- portunity, for the citizens of Patrick Henry, to see the talent among its members perform. A complete variety of talent was exhibited. Patriot Man on Club Sweetheart Two prestigious honors at Patrick Henry were awarded in the fall. The cheerleaders conducted the contest for Patriot Man on Campus. The award was made to John Henry Atkisson with Johnny Glazebrook as first runner-up. The Key Club chose as its 1973-74 Sweetheart Donna Banton an outstanding varsity cheerleader. .V. j r P ' l It Ml i. ' t ' rt “Celebrate Life” Members of several churches in the Ashland area, performed “Celebrate Life” at Patrick Henry on May 3. “Celebrate Life” is a musical rock opera tracing the life of Jesus. Chore- i ography was done by Nancy Kilgore, with the music directed by Dougee Zeno. S.C.A. Elections The week of April 1-5, was a week of vigorous campaigning for the SCA candidates for 74-75 officers. On the 5th, an assembly was held for the candidates to give their cam- paign speeches. During the lunch periods the student body voted for the candidates of their choice. The 74-75 SCA officers are: Earl Win- ston, President; Cheryl Leonard, Vice-president; Eleanor Green, Sec- retary; Ben Mize, Treasurer; Tim Priddy, Historian. 33 34 Miss P.H. Contest On April 5, the Miss P.H. Contest was held. The Cheerleaders and their advisor, Miss Cam Beckwith sponsored the event in which 24 girls participated. The contestants were judged on poise, participation in school activities and appearance. Karen Cobb, a senior and Robin Southworth, a junior, were chosen first and second runners-up, respectively. Spencer Christian of WWBT was Master of Ceremonies. The escorts were the winners from the Patriot Man on Campus Contest. 35 Varsity Baseball The Varsity Baseball Team, coach ed by Bill Martz and Harry Vannoy, ended their season with an impres- sive 8-8-2 record. The quality of this year’s team was even better than the record shows. Many losses were extra-inning, one-run decisions. Several members of the team re- ceived trophies for their outstanding contributions to the team. They were John Henry Attkinson, most valuable pitcher; Robbie Dymacek, best defensive player; Gene Carter, highest batting average and Mike Roberts, most valuable player. 36 J.V. Baseball The J.V. Baseball Team, coached by Louis Flanagan, turned in a record of 6-7-2. The season was highlighted by defeating Lee- Davis twice. The offensive was led by Howard Stanley, Marty Smith, Charles Pugh, Wayne Tingler, and Kevin Leonard, who were the team’s outstanding hitters. The pitching staff was led by Larry Roberts who only gave up 3 earned runs in 7 games. Howard Stanley also pitched two winning games. The J.V. players should help make a strong, successful Varsity squad next year. 37 Track Team Displays Stamina The Boy’s Track Team ended the season with a 1-6 record. The record does not show the great team effort displayed, as several of their defeats were lost by only a few points. This year, the team was led in scoring by Billy Cox with 54 ' 2 points. At the district meet, Cox placed 4th in the high jump, John White, 5th in the discus and Tim Jarvis, 5th in the 440. All three competed in the regionals. Girls’ Track Team Breaks Records . . . The Girls’ Track Team, under the coaching of Eari Hawkins, had a very successful season. With a 3-1 record, the girls set new school records in every event. The team placed 2nd in the district and 3rd in the regionals; also, 9 girls qualified to go to State. Leading scorer, Priscilla Woody, with over 60 points, was district champ in the High Jump and the 440. District Champs . . . The Girls Softball Team captured the district championship with a 6-1 record. Miss Dowdy coached the girls to their finest season ever. Brenda Street, who pitched for the team, was selected Most Valuable Player. The leading hitters for the team were Donna Hall and Brenda Street. Susan Gardner was selected Most Dependable Player. 40 Awards Jill Davis received the DAR Good Citizen Award. Ray Davis received a $100 scholarship from the Spanish Honor Society. The annual Stunt Nite sponsored by the SCA was held in May instead of March this year. The sophomores won with “The Flop Awards” and “The Ashland Bijou.” The juniors won best non-winning skits with “M A S H” and “The Alphabet Kids.” The seniors presented “Hair” and “Ms. Fonebone’s Nursery.” The teachers also presented a skit depicting a “usual” day in class, including a visit from Mr. Lloyd.
