Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air. The echoes bound to a joyful sound. But shrink from voicing care. ... Advertisements We Honor Ronald Scott Lewis “If If you can keep your head when all about you Are losingtheirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust when all men doubt you, But make allowance for all their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating. And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream — and not make dreams your master. If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools. Or watch the things you gave your life to broken. And stoop and build ' em up with worn out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch and toss. And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after you are gone. And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on ; If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue. Or walk with kings — nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ with a distance run— Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And — which is more— you’ll be a Man, my son! Rudyard Kipling 6 7 Winning Doesn’t Come Easy . . . Perseverance Doesn’t Come Easy . . . 9 I Communication Doesn’t Come Easy . . . P.H.H.S. Students Grasp For New Goals . . . After a long and delightful summer vacation, P.H. students had to get back into the swing of things. The cheerleaders and football players were busy practicing for the oncoming season while the teachers were preparing for another school year. Many of the students were busy exchanging news with those they had not seen since June and others were anxiously anticipating meeting the new teachers. 13 Football and Cross Country marked the beginning of our school sports season. This year’s cross country team was led by a new coach, Mr. Ailsworth. It was a very successful effort on both the team ' s and the new coach’s part. 14 Band and Chorus With the beginning of school, band and chorus members started their rehearsals and practices. The band and chorus presented several special programs for the school and community throughout the year. 15 Ashland Parade Pep Rallies Each Friday during football season, a pep rally was held in the gym to boost the spirit and morale of the team and the student body. There was class competition to see who could arouse the most enthusi- asm. The juniors demonstrated the most school spirit. 17 “Bye, Bye Birdie’’ In October 1972, students from Gandy Ele- mentary, Liberty Junior High and Patrick Henry presented the musical “Bye, Bye Birdie” under the direction of Mr. Harold Wright. The musical director was Mr. Frank Reynolds. The choreog- raphers were Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wren. The leading role of Conrad Birdie was portrayed by Rusty Lowry. 18 19 Honor Clubs Install New Members The National Honor Society and Beta Club decided to do something unique. This year the two clubs had a joint tapping service on October 19th. The students were very attentive and the atmosphere was solemn. The program was well planned and very interesting. Approximately eleven were tapped into each club. A reception for both clubs and the parents of the students followed the tapping service. Key Club Ignites School Spirit In a show of spirit, the Key Clubbers ran a game ball 22 miles to Lee Davis before the football game. Each Key Clubber participating ran one or two miles. The runners left from P.H. at 5:10 P.M. and reached Lee Davis at 7:25 P.M. The Key Club sweetheart Lynn Engleby worked long hours helping to prepare for the Homecoming half-time festivities. Homecoming ’72 22 Our 1972 Homecoming events took place on Nov- ember 10th and 11th. The game was played on Friday the 10th, with Douglas Free- man the victor. For the first time, our Homecoming dance was held on the following evening. Debbie Ballenger was selected as our Home- coming Queen. Her court consisted of Melissa Green as Sophomore Princess, Donna Banton and Renee Bailes as Junior Princesses, and Susan Bumpass as Se- nior Princess. Janet Arm- strong was chosen as Maid of Honor. 23 Patriot Man On Campus During the Fall, the Cheerleaders sponsored the Patriot Man On Campus Contest. The nominees were chosen by the Cheerleaders. The student body voted for the guy of their choice by dropping money in the proper can. The winner was Jerry Johnson (a star bas- ketball player) the 1972-73 Patriot Man On Campus. 24 Bell, Book And Candle 25 “Life” For the first time, under the direction of Mrs. Kerisha Peaks, the Chorus appeared on television performing Life”. The show appeared on Christmas eve as a special. The same show was performed live in Azalea mall and here at school.
