THE VOICE 1972 Volume XIII Patrick Henry High Qchool Ashland, Virginia PROPEK ' rV ' OP THE LIBRARY OF V ' TSC-E β EICHIvIOND, VA 2 Forewoi ' d In 1969, a predominantly white Patrick Henry High School and a black John M. Gandy High School were con- solidated under a court-or- dered desegregation plan. Now there was Patrick Henry High School and John M. Gandy Ele- mentary School. Amazingly enough, the ma- jority of the students made the transition without resorting to violence or any physical means to voice their protests. At first most people were surprised, then pleased to realize that a black and white merger could be successful. It was happen- ing at Patrick Henry Senior High School. Still there was a feeling of uncertainty, something was wrong. The 1970-71 school year came as an awakening to all concerned with Patrick Henry. During the S.C.A. election speeches, a walkout was staged by the black students to protest the white write-in can- didate. Perhaps Patrick Henry ' s and John M. Gandy ' s consoli- dation was not such a success after all. Now in 1971-72 we have come to realize that integra- tion doesn ' t automatically mean unity. To achieve unity, takes students, faculty and the administration all working and learning together. The purpose of the 72 Voice then, is not to show that we are unified but to show how we are working toward that goal. 3 Broadwater Broadwater Contents Faculty 1 0 Organizations 62 Activities McEwen McEwen Ads 1 26 Sports 1 04 5 Classes 22 Broadwater . . . Students and Teachers 9 10 Faculty The faculty here at Patrick Henry has a difficult job. They must teach all types of stu- dents of different races and with varying backgrounds and abilities. They have to get to know their students and adjust their curriculum accordingly. To do this requires total coop- eration among teachers and a mutual understanding between faculty and student body. The job became more diffi- cult after the death of Mrs. Lancaster, whose years of ex- perience had made her invalu- able as a friend and teacher. Two other vacancies were cre- ated when, after Christmas, Mrs. Cheryl Andrews and Mrs. Virginia Martin resigned. Both of these teachers had much to give: Mrs. Andrews, her cre- ativity and novel approach to education; Mrs. Martin her many years of experience and lively personality. 1 1 Broadwater office Staff Works Together It is never unusual to see Mr. Turner at school taking care of un- finished business early in the morn- ing or late at night. He has been faced with many problems during his administration. He has filled this position to the best of his ability and has experienced both success and failure. In these times of revolution and change, many feel that the office of principal should be filled by a more liberal man. Others are satisfied with his work and see no reason for change. This school year, more than any other, has proven that both the man and his position are quite con- troversial. MRS. JOYCE HARRIS MRS. EVELYN BUMPASS Tenney ALFRED W. TURNER, JR. - B.S., VIP, M.Ed., University of Virginia. Tenney Mrs. Bumpas had the job of tak- ing care of the financial business of all the clubs and the school. Help- ing Mrs. Bumpass is Mrs. Harris who spends most of her time at the type- writer and signing notes for strayed students. When you are faced with a problem no teacher can help solve, your first impulse is to go ask the secretaries. They are always will- ing to stop their work to help a stu- dent. Even after school they are in the office tired and still busy at work. 12 Tenney R. WATSON DURHAM β A.B., William and Mary. Mr. R. Watson Durham, As- sistant Principal, begins his day meeting with Mr. Turner and students of various interests. His understanding nature and desire to keep our school united have served as a link between students and himself. Mr. Durham and Mr. Turner have worked together, each complementing the other, striving for the best for all. These attitudes have left a promising hope, that our stu- dents will leave here with a deep feeling of unity and working together. The Guidance Department is kept busy year round helping students. The new counselor, Mr. Stone, has helped the sophomores feel more at home at their new school. When jun- iors need help Mrs. Campbell is always there. Mrs. West with diligence and stern manner has helped many of the seniors reach their goal. McEwen MR. AUBREY STONE MRS. MAR)ORIE WEST MRS. )ESSIE CAMPBELL B.A., Randolph Macon College A.B., Virginia Union University B.A., Southeastern State 13 Varying Departments Along with the task of teach- ing Health and Physical Educa- tion, Mr. Ritchie and Miss Dowdy also take on other duties. Besides being coaches, they teach drivers education in the classroom and behind the wheel. The Science Department is one that offers a varied degree of study for its students. One may choose only to take the basic subjects and not con- tinue his studies any further. But a student who wishes to advance has the advantage of the knowledge and the interest shown by the teachers of this department. MR. A listening station and curriculum-ori- ented tapes are available in the library. Although teachers are using more aids, Mr. Cobb would like to see more student participation. The library continues to per- form its duties. Miss Gibbon and Mrs. Crenshaw are always cheerful and quick to recog- nize students. Students and teachers alike find Miss Gib- bon invaluable as she is always willing to stop her work to find information for them. The task of teaching math rests on the shoulders of four women. Despite their heavy work load these teachers are always willing to help students during or after class. An extra- curricular activity of the de- partment is the sending of stu- dents to the regional math contest at V.C.U. MRS. PHYLLIS ANDREWS B.S., Madison MRS, MARVINE TYLER B.A., Westhampton S.C.A. Although hard pressed at times, she always manages to be gracious and alert. She has found time, de- spite her busy schedule, to keep up her private art work which has been displayed in Fairfax, Hanover, and Prince William County art shows. The Social Studies Depart- ment is a vital part of a stu- dent ' s knowledge of the nation and world. The government classes learned about State government and the county court system on trips to the General Assembly and Hanover Courthouse. The 20th Century history class explored in depth the history of this century. The department is not just history, economics and sociology are also taught. MRS. This year two new classes were started in Speech and Drama. Both of the courses in- creased the students ' confi- dence and enabled them to ex- press their ideas more clearly. The teachers are young, many are outspoken, and all are willing to experiment with varied and modern teaching methods. This year two new music teachers came to Patrick Henry. Mrs. Peaks, the chorus instructor and Mr. Littlejohn, the band director. They have combined their talents and hard work in producing a fine and growing Music Depart- ment. MR. Typing, shorthand, account- ing and bookkeeping are just a few of the courses offered by these departments. Mr. Beck and Mrs. Presley ' s true concern for their students was proven through their aid in finding many part time jobs for them. Mrs. Groome lames Beck B.S., V.C.U. B.S., R.P.I. 18 MR. Depart- ment was the place to go. Besides helping out around school, the guys taking a subject under this department made projects of their own. A tractor driving contest was held in the spring. Mechanical drawing is a 2 year course of drawing plans and blue prints of houses, office buildings and bridges. This class serves as an excel- lent preparation course for those who plan to go into architecture. 19 Mrs. Elizabeth Martin M.A., University of South Carolina Mrs. Elizabeth Holt B.A., University of North Carolina Mrs. Ruth Giles B.A., Virginia State Spanish Club Three foreign languages, Latin, French, and Spanish are offered here. The Latin classes center on the reading of Latin, while the French and Spanish classes concentrate on the conversational learning. Mrs. Cross and Mrs. Christian have the important job of teaching home economics. They help prepare the girls for their life ahead as future homemakers. Each girl is allowed to work at her own speed, thus receiving the most from the course. 20 Mrs. Doggett, Mrs. Goodwin, Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Harman, Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Petty Necessary to every school are the staffs which care for the school grounds, prepare lunches and provide transportation for the students. The maintenance and cafeteria staffs never re- ceive the praise they deserve. Though their per- formance is critized by all and rarely appreciated, they continue to work, using the resources pro- vided them. Transportation to and from school for many students is made possible by our bus drivers. Driving in a chaotic atmosphere with the respon- sibility of all the students is not an easy job. Though these staffs are unduly criticized and rarely praised, they are a necessary part of our school. Mr. Clark, Mr. Dabney Mr. Wallows, Mrs. Purkins, Mrs. Carley, Mrs. Tignor, Mrs. Chambers, Mrs. Brice, Mrs. Brown 21 22 From 9 to 3 we go to school. But it doesn ' t end at 3 o ' clock. Many hours are spent in study- ing, cramming and research. F ere, we Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores join together in the ever present atmosphere of scholastic competition, striv- ing for that perfection within ourselves. 23 Senior Class PATRICK yCNRY WM SCUOOL CLASS OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Bobby Eddleton, President; Carol Anne Thompson, Secretary; janet Holt, Treasurer; Gladys Pat- terson, Historian; Burton Lewis, Vice-President. The money raised was used to pay for registration fees at the Beta Convention which several members at- tended in the Spring. As a service project the club collected food and clothing for a needy family in order to pro- vide them with a happier Christmas. The last project of the club was the planting of a dogwood tree beside the audi- torium in honor and memory of the late Mrs. Mary Lancaster. The Hi-Y-Tri-Hi-Y, a national Christian organization, is very influential in promoting togetherness and brotherhood here at Patrick Henry. Besides giving some morning devo- tions and cleaning up the gym before every home basketball game, the group also attends different churches in the Ash- land area once every month. This year the club also joined in a clean-up campaign with several other youth groups in Ashland. This year, as every year, the club submitted a bill to the Model General Assembly spon- sored by the Y.M.C.A. The bill was chosen to be presented and the club sent three mem- bers, Debbie Tate, Paul Harris, and Brenda Baker, to defend it at the M.G.A. David Deford, who was responsible for draw- ing up and submitting the bill, also worked with the repre- sentatives in planning a defens e of the bill. 67 The Spanish Honor Society The Spanish Honor Society was active this year in sponsor- ing Una Velada Musical, which was a fiesta of games, songs and dances. I Barry Banton finishes first, breaking the low hurdle record. Pole vaulting isn ' t as easy as it looks. Come on David, you can make it. 115 This is going to be an easy one for David Hamilton.
