Sophomores, please remain in homeroom. Clarence, please come to the office. 5th and 6th periods will be shortened 5 minutes for a pep ralley. The next bell ring at 2:07. Attention for afternoon announcements. Clarence, please report to the office. f. L !β C ' t Uf;:yafOFvii:; luCHlviOND.VA 2 One Day, Any Day, Every Day β How Important every moment is! Moments of seriousness, work, play and sheer delight. 3 Rise and Shine Patriots! Many need an extra boost in preparation for the following six to seven hours. How fortunate some are to have two means of transportation β bus and car. It may become necessary to use anything as a resting place while waiting for the bus. The traffic director at the railroad crossing has become a familiar face to all traveling from the east. For some boys contemplating skipping, school will end before It has really begun. But for the majority, it is just another typical day. 4 Morning Confusion 6 At about 8:45 on weekday mornings, the sidewalks become a mass of vibrant, living bodies. Clusters of people gather In various places: the library, the office, and homerooms. Many prefer fo mill around the bookstore window, hoping to shove their way through the mob to get a cup of hot chocolate. While the late bell is ringing, students start their slow dash to homeroom, just as Mrs. Harris begins giving the announcements. The teachers attempt to call roll . . . Late stragglers wander in . . . The usual flow of salesmen begin to come. As Mrs. H arris deciphers students ' notes, the morning announcements are sometimes more amusing than informative. 7 1 Periods One Thru Four . . . As the time stretches on so does the stomach as lunch approaches. The agony of boredom grows as the Wednesday meetings get fewer. The occasional class meefings bring abouf topics concerning senior robes and trips, junior prom and candy, and sophomore dance. Some other frequent events are the awards assemblies where the unawarded make snide remarks about the awarded. Senior boys and girls learn a new trick in government class . . . BROWN-NOSING! 8 9 Class Drags On The mind is filled with fatigue . . . tediousness . . . listlessness . . . the monotonous hum of the radiator . . . Many thoughts are running through one ' s mind, such as, Shut up you old hag . . . Boy my hands are about to rot off . . . What does she think we are?? Computers??? Please stomach, don ' t growl . . . 10 1 1 1 Lunchtime! 12 Lunchtime at Patrick Henry offers us many pleasant surprises. Every Friday during football season Mr. Durham Is always faithfully selling those tickets. Coach Ritchie gets his exercise carrying those empty lunch trays back to the counter. Anne Nelson enjoys lunch so much she eats it three times a day. We also see some girls eating their lunch in the restrooms. I wonder, Does the lunch taste better In there? 13 14 15 The 2:30 Blues Are Here The teacher ' s tones are falling on tuned-out ears. The air is stifled with boredom. As usual, some students are wandering around the campus. Meanwhile, in a nearby field, cows are bellowing. How can the teachers expect anyone to concentrate amid all this commotion ? Click-click β the afternoon announcements are here. Hallelujah! Another day Is done. 16 Activities at Educate and For only a quarter you can see anything from Shakespeare to The Whistler in the auditorium All paid assemblies were not presented by outsiders. The Key Club produced a Christmas Concert with the proceeds going to the Christmas Mother. 18 β’F!5L ' ' . nfertain Meanwhile, the Seniors visited the General Assembly, Hanover Courthouses, and early Elizabethan houses, while business classes spent a busy day at the technical center. Other groups went to Vepco, Carpet Land, Solony House, Soil Judging contests, and of course, if you haven ' t missed enough class, you can always lime the track. H. Broaden, For Some the Day Doesn ' t End at 3:00 20 Everyone wasn ' t able to leave school and its cares behind at three. Practices were held for: Cheerleaders, Lettergirls, Majorettes, sports, The Lottery, Liberty Singers and band. If people weren ' t practicing, they were: meeting yearbook and newspaper deadlines, taking part in the Science Fair, participating in tractor driving contests, and waiting for busses and tardy parents. 21 I I Softball Team Reaches a Happy Medium 22 The Softball team had a middle of the road season. Out of six games they won 3 and lost 3. Co-Captains for the year were Seniors Louise Clinton and Charleen Baylor. The biggest win of the season came in the last inning of the Lee-Davis game. One of the better qualities of the team was their sportsmanship. 23 Patriot Power Canβt Be Beat 24 Many people take a football game for granted. At PH the work starts ahead of time and doesn ' t end with the fourth period buzzer. The practice sessions start in August, way ahead of school and keep going until the last game. Also the cheerleaders, band, lettergirls, and majorettes keep busy practicing routines. Each home game Coach Ritchie limes the field while the Key Club gets the Concession stand ready and the Pep Club marks off the stands for the roaring crowd expected to cheer the team on to victory. During the game the FFA Boys have the tedious job of directing traffic and the Girl ' s Varsity Club sells programs. After the game Mr. and Mrs. Durham faithfully count the money from the gate and a few dedicated Key Clubbers find the night ' s take in from their stand. All put together make the PH games a true exhibit of professional entertainment. 25 The PH Patriots were led this year by Jimmy Banks and Gary Wood. Banks was Quarterback and Wood was the star halfback. Wood was helped by David Goodman and James Thomas. Barry Banton and Sam Smith served as ends while Mosker Davis and Earl Ray held down tackles. Billy Taylor and Herbert Trivett played good football as guards. The defense line was led by Mosker Davis. John Axselle was left end and Ellis Harris and Earl Dickerson played right ends. James Thomas, Clarence Traylor or Dwight Green filled fhe role as middle linebackers. The speed was in the ba.ckfleld with Gary Wood, Sam Smith, and Herman Harris. On the sidelines Coach Ritchie worked hard with Coach Cobb and Coach Martz to back him up. I 26 Patriots Proved They Knew How to Move 27 I Eddie Webb Astonishes Lee-Davis Info Defeat i d 28 Ten seconds left. One basket behind. The Lee Davis rivals were estatic. One second left. Eddie shoots wildly from 75 feet away. Lee Davis was cheering triumphantly. The Buzzer sounded, the basket was good. Eyes on both sides were unbelieving. This was only one moment of the history made by the 1970-71 basketball team. 29 30 31 Things did not go well for the Track Tea n this year. The record turned out rather badly with I win and 6 losses. This wasn ' t because of a lack of skill but there was a lack of spirit. One thing that looks good for next year is the fact that the J.V. ' s were undefeated. Thirteen varsity boys stared and 7 more received letters. Clarence Traylor got the Pep Club ' s Most Valuable Player Award. Top scorer for the season was Jimmy Ray. 32 Track Team Had Record of 1-6 i I ! 33 Cross Country Runs Through a Tough Season 34 After the hours of practice under Coach Gill, the team met a tough season β against eight rugged schools. The Patrick Henry Team defeated 5 teams in the regional and 4 in the district. Although the boys came out with 2 wins and 6 losses, said Coach Gill, they all improved greatly. The record may not be the greatest, but considering we were playing some of the toughest teams in the region, we can be proud of our efforts. 35 Baseball Team 36 After losing some of our top players this year, the baseball team came out and tried their best. Six members received stars and I I others lettered. The team only had two wins to their record and although the record was poor the boys were out on the diamond with a goal set for the best game possible. Pitcher Perry Robinson was voted most valuable player and was presented a trophy by the Pep Club. 37 Homecoming Brought Sadness . . . Homecoming creeps slowly forward. Simple things β crepe paper, glue, cardboard β these create shining moments to remember. Simple words can not describe the emotions that accompanied this occasion. 38 . , . Memories Friends meeting forgotten friends, nervousness of the Princesses, anticipation about the outcome of the game, and the thrill of the dance. I 39 Months of Work Provide Prom night finally arrived, after much anticipation by both Juniors and Seniors. The Juniors hopefully awaited the reactions to ail their hard work β Saturday and Sunday meetings, trips to Richmond, repeated decorating, untimely changes, and mass confusion. 40 a Night to Remember Beneath a canopy of pastel colors, everyone was enchanted by the theme Color My World. The seniors formed an artist ' s pallet as the band softly played the theme. Everyone enjoyed the evening so much, that few were able to return the next morning to clean up. 41 After 5 Years of Trying . . . 42 1971 graduates awaited graduation night. The excitement started weeks before. Class Day was interesting and humorous for almosf everyone. Senior classes were aftended and forgoften fil the next day. Hopes grew high as the day grew near for the announcement of senior exam exemptions. School ended on June 4. Baccalaureate followed which began the ending of their high school careers. Graduation night was mass confusion. Some parents were not able to crowd into the auditorium, seniors had to remain standing during their own graduation exercises, and some seniors were unaware that graduation was taking place. All in all, graduation was a disappointment. 43 Graduation Looks i 45 Beauty Pageants, Concerts, Plays highlighted the school session. An annual comedy production, Stunt Nite, sponsored by the SCA is one of the lighter activities. Stunt Nite has proved to be an evening of laughter, a heyday for the performer as well as for the audience. A Sophomore skit, What You See is What You Get, received the best stunt performed by a non-winning class. The Seniors were fortunate this year to present 46 the winning skits β a true to life look at a Kee Club Concession Stand and a view of Earth Day, 1981. The Arts Festival was a more cultural event of the season. It featured selections from the Patrick Henry Band under the direction of Miss Cobb. The popular Close to You was among the selections presented. A climax for the evening was the presentation of The Lottery, a serious one act play. The instructors were Mr. Wright and Mrs. Giles. The HHS Chorus concluded the festival with several selections. The finale, O Happy Day, received a standing ovation. 47 Beautiful People The beauty titles were taken this year by Anne Nelson Harris and Perry Robinson. The Mr. Patrick Contest with 22 big, beautiful, brawny contestants was one of the greatest events of the year. An occasion of pomp and gaiety was the Miss Patrick Henry Contest. The Miss Patrick Henry Contest is sponsored by the Cheerleaders. The Mr. Patrick Henry Contest is sponsored by the Pep Club. 48 49 Senior Faces k. -A 50 51 Informal Formal Informal Formal Informal Formal Informal Forme ! !
