Treasurer; and Kathv Lewis, Reporter. They progressed into the year with the excitement of graduation growing closer each day. They experienced many new ideas presented to them by other students and the faculty. They had the joy of the prom and sorrow of leaving their friends. They participated in Stunt Night all five years and what do you know — they never won! They ordered caps and gowns and were the first class to purchase them. Many people kept them with the hope of becoming angels for once in their life. They can now look back with many warm memories of their years in high school and forward with many hopes for the future. 24 Begins With Senioritis JERRY WAYNE ADAMS JOE MAC ANDERSON MARION LOUCINDY ANDERSON RONALD MORRIS ANDERSON ELIZABETH ANNE BAKER JERRY LELAND BAYER ROGER EMMANUEL BRAXTON RUTH ANTONETTE BAKER STEVEN PAYNE BARKER JUDY CAROL BARNES JOSEPH MARK BELL JUANITA FAY BENTON WANDA MARIE BLEVINS DAVID BAIN CHRISTY ANN GARY McKENZIE BREMNER BRETT BROCK The Senior Year Is: DALTON JAMES BUSSEY BETTY JO CAMPBELL LINDA DALTON CANNON MARY FAYE CANNON DEBORAH LEE CARNEAL CHARLOTTE ANNE CARTER DONNA JEANNE CARTER JOYCE VERLETT CARTER THEODORE BERNARD CARTER YVONNE MARIE CHAPPEL PATRICIA ANNE COLE CHEWNING HENRY THOMAS CHILDRESS. One of the highlights of the season was the defeat of Lee-Davis, for the first time in six years. Gary Wood was the leading scorer of the season with 54 points. He was followed by Jamie Taylor with 48. In third place was Jim Davis, and fourth was freshman Jimmy Banks, a promising young player. Gary’s best game was against Varina, where he gained 150 yards and made four touchdowns. Jamie’s best was against Manchester, where he also gained 150 yards and made four touchdowns. Jim Davis’s best was versus Colonial Heights, where he gained 110 yards. Jimmy Banks played an excellent game against Lee-Davis, where he scored two TD’s and completed three for seven passes as quarterback. Both Jamie and Gary tied the old record of touch- down ' s per game with four each. Outstanding line- men were Ronald Harris, Jim Davis, Bill Andrews, Craig Jennings, and Gary Brock. Barry Banton and Sam Smith did excellent jobs as defensive backs and promised to be great assets to the team in the future. The boys felt that their best played games of the sea- son were Meadowbrook and Petersburg. 8 Above: Warren Payne gains yardage against Varina. A big victory for the team was marked by the defeat of Hopewell, whom had never been defeated by the Patriots. Outstanding offensive player was Herman Harris who scored ten touch- downs. Other standouts were Tippy Oliver, Mathew Lewis, George Carter, John Axselle and Rickie Hol- Defensively the team was well balanced, with major plays being made by Ellis Harris. Chuck Jack- son, Jeff Mitchell, John McEwen, and Bubba Wick- ham. Said Coach DuPriest of the team, It’s the best all-around team I have ever seen. Big things will be expected of this team in the near future. 62 Cross Country First row: Kenneth Bremner, Roy Dail, David Bremner, Tommy Pumphrey. Second row: Coach Gill, Craig Jewell. Forfeit This year the varsity Cross Country team had a rough season. The team unfortunately did without a coach until two weeks before the first meet. Al- though the team record was 2-6, there were three games in which we were beaten by less than five points, and many teams which beat us in dual meets we in turn beat in the regional and invitational meets. Leading the pack this year were David and Kenneth Bremner, and Ronnie Moore. There was quite a large gap between the two leading runners due to the loss of two members, and this definitely hurt the team. David Bremner represented the Pa- triots in both the district and the state meets, and placed 61 out of the more than 200 runners. He also holds the record for Patrick Henry’s cross country course. 63 Girls’ Basketball — Best Yet Front: Co-captains Debbie Carneal and Donna Carter. Among the thrills of the season we twice romped Lee-Davis and defeated Henrico for the first time in the many years we have played them. Another highlight of the season was de- feating; Colonial Heights in a double overtime bv four O O J points. Outstanding offensive plav was performed by Debbie Carneal with a total of 136 points for the sea- son. Following her were Charlene Bayler and Trudy Young with 58 and 51 points respectively. Co- Captains of the team were Debbie Carneal and Donna Carter. The managers, Sarah Messick and Maureen McKenney, did an excellent job in support- ing the team and in keeping the student body well in- formed on the progress of this most outstanding team. Second row: Billy Robinson, Steve Usry, Johnny Markey, Brent Douglass, Peggy Robinson, Dennis Jackson, Bubba Mines, Ronald Harris, John Starke, Ted Carter. This year the Patriot Varsity Basketball squad had the best record compiled in seasons. Although the record did not seem very impressive at 7 wins and 12 losses the team proved to be quite a challenge to opponents in the Colonial District. Through hard work, determination, and spirit, we managed to defeat the two leading teams in our district. These wins over Douglas Freeman and Highland Springs clearly showed the capabilities of our great team. The merger of Patrick Henry and John M. Gandy brought new height to our school. Perry Robinson at 6 ' 7 , Dennis Jackson at 6 ' 5 , and Sam Smith at 6 ' 3 greatly aided the team in rebounding and shooting power. Outstanding scorers and their averages were Eddie Webb with 18, Jamie Taylor with 11, Dennis Jackson with 9, and Sam Smith with 8. This year’s tri-captains were Eddie Webb, Jamie Taylor, and Jim Davis. The overall performance this year ended in the team’s participating in the district tournament for the first time in five years. With a large number of returnees expected for next year, everyone is looking forward to a most successful season! Best Team In Years Above: Jamie Taylor leaps above rivals from Lee-Davis. Miss Lanier, the SCA supported and sponsored various projects and activi- ties. One project which was rather phil- anthropic in nature was the annual Christmas drive. The student body will- ingly gave money which was donated to needy families. Blair Gardner the outgoing S.C.A. President installs president-elect Bill v Robin- son. Volunteer members of the student body were selected to participate in the student exchange program sponsored by various S.C.A.’s in our school dis- trict. Our school was involved in stu- dent exchange with Hermitage, Free- man, and Lee-Davis. The annual Stunt Night” this year, in which the sophomores presented the winning pro- duction was a major activity of the SCA. Senior S.C.A. representatives 114 Old and New S.C.A. officers. The Student Cooperative Association was in- strumental in getting overnight quarters for the visiting chorus from Bristol who presented a most enjoyable concert for the student body. A later project undertaken by this association was the SCA workshop in which beneficial discussion groups were a main feature. The S.C.A. Advisory Board Brings Two Schools Together. The Squatty Bodies,” The Old Folks Home” and Sharon’s hips helped to win Stunt Night for the Sophomores. The girl scouts, boy scouts, and the faithful leader Wille Buck, Aliss, the Juniors, came in Sec- ond. Third place went to the Seniors. They struck a milestone in stunt night — a serious skit. 116 The majorettes, lettergirls, and band pose here in marching formation. The lettergirls form a heart. This couldn ' t be all the band. 1 17 Our Senior Lettergirl SANDRA GOODMAN, Head Lettergirl JILL PIERCE. Assistant Head Beauty is just a pom-pom away. Yes, they are our lettergirls. They might get tired once in awhile but they are always there to add spirit to the band. LINDA DELING KAYRON MERRITT, I.C.C. Representative 118 And Majorettes Standing: B. Henrv, J. Bruce, J. Doggett, B. Bowles, D. Tate, B. Oliver, G. Goodloe. Kneeling: Head Majorette S. Edwards, Mascot A, Luck The P.H. majorettes showed their winning spirit by bringing home a trophy from their last parade. This year during Homecoming they performed with excellent style; while feature twirler, Beverly Bowles, took the spotlight with her skill as a fire twirler. JUDY BRUCE SHIRLEY EDWARDS, Head Patriots Go Broadway The band faced the unique approach of a female director this year. Miss Cobb’s hard-crusted determi- nation led the band to many victories. The most re- warding was their second football half-time produc- tion, during which the audience welcomed, with a standing ovation, the new swing-style marching. Many long and tedious hours were spent at re- hearsals for marching and concert band. However, the progressive results of the performances won much public recognition. The success of the Christ- mas concert paved the way for further activities. On the second of May, the marching unit won the first place trophy in the Mechanicsville parade. Hav- ing triumphed over their rivals, the Patriots were prepared for their master production. The third of May drew a large audience to the formal spring con- cert. With the theme of Patriots Go Broadway,” the band entertained everyone present. In conclusion, the band had an eventful year. Special thanks go to the new members from John M. Gandy who added soul to the band. What do vou see, Vickie? 120 Sing Out, Liberty Singers! Old Liberty Singers sing out. 1, 2, 3, 4, ready sing! This is a constant de- mand at the Liberty Singers Monday night re- hearsals. They had new and better things this year with a few changes. Linda Shaw took over as student director with Miss Cobb as adviser. The group became a better group when we held auditions in the winter. The twelve became twenty-two hard working individuals trained to sound like one. Highlights were church and school concerts. At the Spring concert the Pa- triots broke History and went Broadway in for- mal attire. Liberty Singers nervously await their spring concert.
