As people grow, they mature and become more confident of themselves. The problem times lie between when they were kids and when they become adults. These uneasy moments are called the teenage years. Many people call these times the best years of a person's life. Most teens ask, If these are the best years of my life, what's the rest going to be like? The teen years are very crucial; it is the time they decide on their values and morals. They are also deciding what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Thinking about all these questions can make a person forget who he is. One begins to lose sight of the meaning in one's life. Many people start to go with the crowd in order to be popular. By doing this, they begin to Idse their self identity. Their identity is the very essence that keeps them from becoming just ... A Face in the Crowd. 4 Opening Opening 5 In With the New! Out With the Old . . . Henry High School said good-bye to the old Porter Field. It was time to put the old wooden bleachers and the control booth to rest In place of the wooden bleachers. Captains Brad Lutz, Mike Race, and Bob Pennaz led the team to a 21 to 12 victory over the South Tigers. A highlight of the game: Henry scored the first touchdown. It was a moment to remember. That was the first step in the march to victory over the Tigers. The half-time activities included the tradition of escorting the King and Queen onto the fteld. The danceline and the band also put on halftime shows. The dancclinc performed to Oh Sheila! and the band marched around the field playing several musical numbers, including the Henry rouser. This included the coronation ceremony. The coronation was a closed campus affair. It was held during school hours in the gymnasium. For the first time in Patrick Henry's history, a foreign exchange student was crowned Homecoming King. Henry was at its classiest. The decorations were done by students from the stage crew and other students volunteering their time. The entertainment was provided by several Henry students. Tears and hugs punctuated the crowning of our 1985 Homecoming King and Queen, Rafael Yncstroza and Debbie Anderson. The dress code was changed to formal and semi-formal. Ladies wore their finest dresses and gentlemen donned their best suits. Laughter filled the gym lobby, decorated with red and gray streamers and balloons to provide an appropriate atmosphere in which Pats and Patties could dance to the entertainment of Midwest Sound and Light Show. There was plenty of foot stomping music, dancing, picture taking, and getting married by the famous Marrying Sam. Once again Mr. Feeley had the honor of being Marrying Sam. Suspense built throughout the night until the moment arrived for the royalty to begin their reign. The crowning of the royalty brought a loud roar of applause, as well as laughter, tears, and a consoling word for those who didn't win. In taking notice of that recognition, students here at Henry, as well as students elsewhere, observed the holiday of Martin Luther King's birthday. Here at Henry, Black History Week started Feb. 18 with several programs. A speaker from KMOJ talked about gospel, blues, jazz, and rock music. Another speaker talked about famous black women. The team as a whole placed third in the city meet. The team was small, but where they lacked in quantity, they made up in quality. They are said to be a veteran team . 28 Boy s Cross-Country Our girls' tennis team, coached by Monte Miller, had a very good year. The team consisted of eight swimmers, including the only seniors, captains Penny Edlund and Stephanie Davis. As a result of their size the team didn’t win many meets, but it made up for those losses with individual victories. Sophomore Lisa Anderson won first place in the 200 individual medley and second place in the 100 freestyle at the state competitions this year. Next year’s swim team is sure to be a success. The team, headed by captains were Gail Kundc, Katie O'Brien, and Laura Blakeborough, finished at third place in the Minneapolis conference. The team had a lot to be proud of, including the fact that Kelly Javis and Katie O'Brien were chosen all-city players. The team is sure to be hot in the pursuit of first place in the years to come. Girl Soccer 33 Team Shines Under Lights Henry's varsity football team had a successful year overall. Despite the loss of many star athletes who graduated last year, the team was able to achieve a record of five wins and five losses. The team consisted of only fourteen seniors out of thirty-four players. This along with misfortunate injuries throughout the season contributed to the losses of some important games. However, the team did manage to pull off a few well deserved victories. Henry won its historic game against Southwest by 12-6. The win made Henry's first home game under the lights a success. From there the team went on to beat South 21 -12 at Homecoming. Henry had four all-city players this year: Craig Durushia, Brad Lutz, Mike Race, and Robert Read. They were scheduled to play more games, but due to cancellations, they ended up playing just the two. They were to play North, but the North team didn't show up for the game. This was coach Wicker s first year of coaching here at Henry, as well as the first year for many of the football players. Next year's outlook is hopefully more promising. Hie team had only two all-around gymnasts, Jancli Zadlo and Renae LeBlanc. An admirable performance by Renae LeBlanc enabled her to place third all-around at one meet. Inexperience, injuries, and a small team all added up so they were unable to do as well as they hoped. The coaches were Linda Hoppe and 1-owell Peterson. The team, made up of mostly sophomores and juniors, was a young one. They struggled throughout the season, but overcame their handicap at one match and upset South 36-27. Monte Miller was the head coach, assisted by Andy Nelson and Johnny George. Wrestling J9 Shoot to the Limit The boys varsity basketball team had an exciting season. As of printing time, they were tied with Roosevelt for 2nd place in the conference with a 4-2 record. Their overall record at that time was 6-5. Whenever they had a home game, the bleachers were full of fans. The game everyone will remember best was when Henry defeated South 101-82. That was the first time in a long time, if ever, that Henry has ever reached 100 points in a single game. The team's tri-captains were Kevin Byers, Marcell Lynn, and Ben Winberg. They were a small team with no definite positions for the players. Their season started out with a loss against Park Center, which was followed by six wins in a row. In their first conference game, against Edison, Kelly Javis scored 21 points which led to Henry's win, 43-40. One close loss was when North's girls nudged Henry's girls, 45-43. The game they did win was an exciting one. They upset Washburn 4-3 in overtime. The winning goal was made by Steve Aim, assisted by Ken Schluter, with approximately two and a half minutes left in the game. The captains were Bob Pennaz and Steve Conley. The coaching staff consisted of David Busby, head coach; Dave Wicker, assistant coach; Jeanne Seiler, trainer. A Step Ahead of the Rest The boys track team, coached by Jim Cook and Richard Jacobson, had an outstanding season. The fifteen varsity runners displayed excellent talent on the track. In the past years they have captured some City as well as Twin City titles. This team consisted of many new players and included only one senior. Since the team was smaller than usual they concentrated on building for the future. In spite of these minor setbacks, the team was still able to finish in the top four teams. ABOVE RIGHT: Heidi Armstrong displays a mean serve. ABOVE: A var-sity player slams the birdie. 52 Girl's Badminton Small Team, Big Effort The JV badminton team had a small team his year. With a total of six players, most of which were new, they didn’t make up a whole team. What they lacked in size, they made up in effort. They ended their season with seven wins and five losses. It was a building season; a time for the new players to gain experience. Ms. Pccchia said she was happy with the season, hut hoped more girls would join next season. VARSITY BASEBALL I Team Hits Home The varsity baseball team coached by John Washington had a successful season overall. The team consisted mainly o( juniors. Teddy bears, matchbox cars, and Barbie dolls, were just some forms of our entertainment. We could swing on our swing sets for hours as our parents gave us underdogs . The dolls and hot wheels have been replaced by tennis raquets, footballs, socccrballs, basketballs, and baseballs. Nursery rhymes have gotten a beat and arc now called rock n' roll. Little boy blue has changed to PRINCE, with his purple reign and Miss Muffet is transformed into a MADONNA. Many wish to go back to those carefree days. Some try different ways to get back, but it's not possible. Human beings are constantly changing. Our toys that we use now will soon be changed again. Now that we re almost adults, we'll have to live with responsibilities- we can't turn back. But that doesn't mean life can't be fun! Enjoy challenges and attack them head on! IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL HENRY STUDENTS important for all Henry High School students to become as proficient as possible in all academic areas. With this is mind, we are implementing a uriting program immediately that will place a stronger emphasis on writing in ALL classes. Each Henry student will receive an outline which is to be followed for uriting assignments in all classes. Second-hour teachers will explain and answer questions concerning this uriting program. — MRS. ROBINSON This notice was given to all students in their home room classes. The reactions among students and teachers varied. Everyone wondered one thing: Why? All of the ad- ministration was telling students to write their name, date, and period in the upper right hand corner of their papers. Some students commented that they thought they had learned these basics in second grade; apparently other students must have missed that day. The problem could also be that they haven't learned their names yet. What could the solution to the problem be? Maybe more classroom time could be spent learning practical things. The curriculum could include writing papers, learning to read, etc., instead of learning things that will help to win at Trivial Pursuit. Senior Memories Kelly M. Anderson: .Which Kelly?
