All-city runners John Sereno ond Mike Edqulst led the boys to on 8-1 duol meet record while locking in squod size. With the exception of three gomes, oil matches were held close. Coach Jim Krae summed up the season saying, I was disappointed in the outcome of the gomes, bur never in the ploy of the team. Tennis Strikes Up a Racket 1983 s Girls' Tennis Team was larger rhon in previous yeors. Fifreen new members made up rhe mojoriry of rhe reom. Bur rerurning ployers were rhe ream's srrong poinr. Spikers Strike The 1983 Girls Volleyball Team hod o relorively young squod. with only two seniors and the resr olmosr oil juniors. They were small in numbers and ore looking ro improve on this year's 4-12 record next season. Water Makes Winners After swimming mony hours in cold water, the Henry Girls Swim Teom completed on impressive seoson. Led by senior Dione Almsrrom, the teom finished 15th in the Store Tournoment. Like most Henry teams, they were young with most of the teom being tenth graders or younger. Coproin Lisa Patrick said. We hod o better seoson thon most people expected!” At left: D. The quolity of the teom hos developed with mony of the younger ond newer members showing much improvement. Under the cooching direction of Korhy Nesser, o former Henry gymnost, the teom is looking forword to o stronger seoson next yeor with mony of its teom members returning. At left: J. Ufto gets odvlce from her cooch. 57 High Hoops This yeor's girls' bosketboll teom foced o height disadvantage in most games, but made up for it in spirit. The team devosoted North, stunning the Polors 49 47 in overtime. Senior, Paulo Rangel led the team and the city in scoring and wos one of the most skillful boll handlers on the teom. With the loss of only four seniors the team should be strong next year. This year's sophomore team showed strong promise in strengthening next years varsity team. Basketball Takes a Good Bounce This year's Boys' Boskerball ream hod a very productive and successful year. They ployed in some exuberent victories and some heortbreoking losses. The junior-dominated team is looking forward to enjoying more successes under Cooch John Washington next year. This year's Sophomore team hos compiled multiple victories. They upset a highly rated North ream, but lost o competitive game against Roosevelt. Pucksters Skate on The 1984 Henry Hockey Teom didn'r quire live up to their high expecrorions. They did well, however, finishing third in the city. Senior Coptoin Colin Dockry soid. The whole teom improved o lor during the season ond shows promise for the future. With thirteen experienced players returning next yeor. the ream is looking forward to being one of the city's best. 63 J.V. Squad Looks to Future The Junior Vorsiry Hockey reom hos hod some exciring ond memorable gomes. The members of this team ore looking ro conrribure ro next years Vorsiry success. Borh reams finished seventh in rhe region, with only Diane Almsrrom advancing ro rhe Stare meet. Their season was o fairly successful one. with Curtis Gatlin and Ricky Johnson both pitching no-hitters against North. Curtis was also voted to the All-Clfy team. In the first Girls Softball Conference ever held in the Minneapolis Public Schools. Henry completed on excellent, undefeated seoson for the city championship. They also beat Hill-Murroy for the Twin-City Championship. With the exception of five graduating seniors, the teom wos expected to do very well In '84. The 1983 reom helped keep the city title of Henry. Henry olso beat St. Paul Humboldt with o score of 7-0 to win the Twin-City Championship. Six of the team members competed in the Individual City Conference Championships. Pom Hootojo ond Morio Meyer won first place in the doubles competition, with LeeAnn Utto ond Mary Jo Hermonson os consolorion chomps. Lisa Otto won second place in the singles, with Mory Truchinski the singles consolation chomp. Many of the girls soy that the reason for their success is mostly due to the fine coaching of Miss Jeon Pecchio.
