Because of so many changes in 1982-83 at Henry, the 1983 Orator Staff has selected Seasons” as this year’s Orator theme. 3 The new Henry attendance area covers a large por-tlon of North Minneapolis. Henry Faces the Challenge of Change Talk of a “Five Year Plan” was often in the news headlines in the Spring of 1982 as the Minneapolis School Board voted to close 18 public schools, including three high schools, at the end of the school year. The closing of Central. Marshall-U and West high schools meant substantial boundary changes and other adjustments for the remaining seven senior highs. Henry's boundaries were basically increased with the addition of territory from the old North and West high school areas south to 35th Avenue No. and west of Penn Avenue No. all the way south to the Burlington Northern railroad tracks, and east of Penn between Olson Highway and the B.N.R.R. to Interstate 94, taking in a large segment of the near Northside. Henry's enrollment jumped from 800 last year to nearly 1300 for the 1982-83 school year. Some old school acquaintances of long standing were dissolved as students accepted the Board's decision and moved on to form new friendships in new school settings for some, and familiar places for others. First trimester registration gave the “new’’ Henry student body its first look at a greatly changed teaching and administrative staff. Forty-nine new teachers from a total of 72 greeted students on the first day. Mr. Magnuson and Mr. Hickman were joined by new assistant principals, Dr. Duane Eklin and Mr. Fred Meyer. Few school organizations, teams and traditions have not felt the “challenge of the change this year, and yet the Henry High School student body and staff have continued to grow and meet these new challenges, whatever they may be. Summer is a time for boating, going to the cabin, and watching sunrises and sunsets. It's also a time to get together with friends and have a good time. Summer is a time to spend outdoors in nature. But soon we are back in school again, and when the snow starts to fall, it’s nice to remember the sunny days of summer. Homecoming, held on September 24. was really the first get together of the entire new Henry student body. Not only was the freshmen class new to the traditions of a Henry Homecoming but these customs were a change for several hundred new Henry upperclassmen. With the large turnover in the teaching staff there were also new group advisors, adding a somewhat confused situation. Even so. we all pulled together to Strip The Tigers Of Their Stripes.” Queen Laura Sheppard was crowned in traditional ceremonies on Thursday evening following the Talent Show. Queen Laura and her court reigned over day long activities on Friday including the pepfest, hall decorating, football game and the dance. After an 8-0 victory over South on the football field, the day concluded with a highly successful dance. Top Right: Princesses Stephanie Johnson. Raeann Mysliwiec. The team consisted of 19 seniors and eight juniors. The highlight of the season was the 8-0 win over the South Tigers for Homecoming. Senior Bob Green scored the winning touchdown on a punt return. Senior Co-captains Jon Harrison and Mark Meyer were named to the All-City team. Mark was also named the team’s most valuable player. Top Loft: Captains Jon Harrison. Competing in regions were doubles LeeAnn Utto and Cheryl Theisen, who lost in the second round. Tina Purkapile and Lisa Otto competed in singles. Senior Lisa Otto advanced to the quarter-finals. The girls Swim team was coached by Michelle Schmid. The team was young and placed low in the standings with two wins over Roosevelt. Diane Almstrom proved her individual competitive ability with many records being set. Diane set new school records in the 50 free style. 500 meter and 200 meter free-style. and 100 butterfly events this year. Has Busy Year The National Honor Society has had a busy year, enjoying parties, a dinner theatre trip, a visit to a senior care center and was planning further spring outings. The thirty member group was under the advisorship of Mrs. Doreen Savage and a faculty committee. This years N.H.S. officers were President Mark Meyer. Vice President Bob Green, Secretary Tim Joyce, and Treasurer Lisa Otto. The group, somewhat larger than last year due to the increase in school enrollment, promotes fun while seeking to help others. Each member while maintaining a high academic standing seeks to uphold the N.H.S. fundamentals of Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship. Top Right: J. Macosek smiles pretty. Below Right: B. Student Governments (Tleet Challenge Throughout a year of many changes, this year's student government has tried to incorporate old Henry traditions and new ideas into various student activities. Elections were held in October by each class and the newly elected class representatives set to the task of planning an activity-filled school year. This year’s student government adviser was Mrs. Beverley Plant. The administrative adviser was Dr. Duane Eklin. The student government is responsible for planning Homecoming activities, Sno-Daze week, Santo Grams, and Spring Fling along with school dances. In addition to planning and executing student activities, Henry representatives attended city-wide meetings and assumed responsibility for several service projects within the school. Mrs. Plant in assessing this years students government said, As in many other areas, I believe the 1982-83 school year has been one of transition for the student government at Henry. Because of the changing student population and staff, several traditions have been brought together. With class officer elections in the spring, we will be able to stand the 1983-84 school year in a more organized manner. At Right: B. Hartfiel, D. Hanek, and J. Nauman make plans for Sho-Daze week. Henry Choirs Take New Direction The 1982-83 school year brought to Henry a new choral music director, Mr. Wayne Keifer who divided his time between Henry and Roosevelt this year, spending his mornings at Henry. “The Ninth Grade Chorus which meets first period each day, is an enthusiastic group of singers.” said Mr. Keifer. The objective of this vocal group is training voices to sing in the Concert Choir and includes several public performances. Mr. Keifer added. “We are having a good year, promising an even better 1983-84 music year.” The Concert Choir, grades ten, eleven and twelve meets daily, second period. This Choir has been small in number, but Mr. Keifer described the vocal music quality as “good, improving with each public performance. Top Loft: Smile pretty. C. Harzard. So underclassmen years should be a great time in life. You start Patrick Henry as a timid freshman, unfamiliar with everything. The halls seem so big, you seem so small. You feel so all alone, separated from all of your junior high friends. But as the days pass, you meet new people and now you’re off to your start of senior high. As sophomores you are learning the ropes. You find yourself becoming more involved in school activities. The thought of being half way through keeps the positive attitude going. You want to do well and make the best of your school years. Soon to be seniors, as juniors you find yourself TOPS. With the seniors so busy, planning activities and getting things together are a big part of you. One more year and your real life planning begins. GETS COUD Htvjfev GET HOT January 31-February 4 was Sno-Daze '83. The week started off on Monday with Toga Day. Henryites braved the cold weather to come to school in their favorite-colored sheets. Tuesday students dressed up in their favorite sportswear. Wednesday people were dressed in their Oxford shirts, argile socks, and boat shoes. Thursday Henry was invaded by Punk-rockers, and to wrap up the week. Friday was 50’s day. All night students rocked-n-rolled to the sounds of the 50’s at the dance. Students also had a chance to participate in after school activities, such as a Tug-of-War and Snowball eating contest. Suspense built up throughout the week as everyone wondered who would be Henry’s 1983 Sno-King. A Top Ten was chosen the week before, consisting of Rob Antony, Mark Meyer, Eddie Banks, Gary Westbrook, Bob Smude, Tim Seiffert, Tom Heinecke, Dan Jackson, Gerg Hampton, Rick Johnson. Rick, Tim, Bob, Eddie, and Gary, were named to the Top Five in a second round of voting, and on Friday evening, Bob Smude was crowned king by Homecoming Queen Laura Sheppard. 68 69 1983 Sno-Daze Royalty King Bob Smude Prince Eddie Banks Prince Tim Seiffert 71 Prince Gary Westbrook Prince Rick Johnson At Jackson, Tim Seiffert. The dedication and hard work of each group helped to create and strengthen school spirit. 92 93 Speech, Debate Speak Out This year’s Speech team consists of 26 members, many returning from last year. Many long hours are put into writing a speech. This hard work pays off. Returning this year were Andy Anderson and Charles Greene who went to State Competition last year. Most of the credit for the team’s success goes to Miss Connie Blom, the organizer of the Speech Team. This year a Debate Team was re-established at Henry under the leadership of Mrs. Bev Plant. Starting with a small group of interested students, Mrs. Plant began teaching the basics of debate last fall. After hours of research and practice, this year’s team was successful in winning a number of debates. The team was led by Seniors Andy Anderson and John Armstrong. Mrs. Plant stated she is “very proud of what they accomplished.” Top Right: S. Bradley emphasizes a point during his speech. Below: F. Kara presents his final statement. At Right: C. Blom helps J. For over fifteen years. Mr. Swanson has organized an intramural basketball program for athletes who normally would not compete in the winter trimester. Players consist of football players, cross country runners, baseball players or those who like to play basketball but not at the varsity level. The games are played with a little more physical contact than the varsity games, and a lot faster than a game in phy-ed class. The players receive no recognition, rather the satisfaction of competing with friends, keeping in shape and perhaps drawing a standing room only crowd of twenty fans down in the old boy’s gym. The guys compete in a round-robin tournament to establish a champion team. The champion intramural team usually plays against the 76’s, the Jets, the Bruisers, and the Bruins. Students taking classes in several departments, like Science, were met at registration for first trimester by all new faces. But no matter what the subject, the teaching staff has had to work hard at acquainting themselves to new teaching situations. By second trimester Henry seemed to be operating quite normally. Due to the lack on interest of seniors in trying out, underclassmen were asked to lend a hand and fill the extra cast parts. The play revolved around a boxer, Joe Pendleton, who entered heaven before his time. Fast Pitch Given a Chance Far Below: Fowell Softball team. Directly Below: M. Meyers concentrating on a softball strategy. The 1982-83 school year can be remembered as the year of transition. Many changes took place quite rapidly. One of those changes affected the girls sports program. In the spring of 1983 the seven remaining high schools participated for the first time in girls softball. Many girls at Henry had experience in playing softball through the Park Board or other sponsoring-type organizations. Some girls however, played their first soft-ball game in this first season of ’83. The major difference between the Park Board teams and the high school league rules is that the Minnesota State High School League plays under fast pitch rules. Not many girls had played this style, but they were all willing to learn. It is doubtful that the Minneapolis teams will be able to compete against the Suburbs in the first few seasons. Fast pitch softball has been played for many years in the suburbs. The Patriots of Henry are happy to have the sport added to their extra curricular activities. Far Left: L. Swingers Hope to Improve The girls golf team consisted of four players. Their season wasn’t very successful seeing that their record was 2-7. They're hoping for a stronger team next year. This year’s J.V. badminton team had more players than the Varsity team. However, though small, they did well, as did the Junior Varsity. Below: GOLF CAPTAINS — L. Patrick. L. Utto. J. Every era has its own crazes or gimmicks that symbolized the times. Being scared was popular in 1982, so everyone went to theaters and repopularized drive-ins to be frightened and grossed-out by movies like “Halloween III.” However, being entertained was also a major requirement of the movies, “E.T.” did this. Roller skating also became popular. People in skates that looked like tennis shoes partied at Northgate Roller Arena and around Lake Calhoun. And those who didn't run or skate tuned out by blasting “new wave” sounds of the Go.Go’s and Prince, while soaking up the rays. At night or during lunch, students went to Mac’s, woofed down Rocky Rococo or “chilled out in the lunchroom. Another astonishing creation were Mopeds. Everyone from kids to grandparents were seen riding these gas-saving vehicles. Ten-thirty Saturday nights a lot of people watched “Saturday Night Live.” with the Coneheads, Mr. Bill, and Eddie Murphy. Later people were seen sneaking around a friend or foe’s house armed with toilet paper. The next morning the victim woke up to brightly colored streamers hanging in the trees and a big mess to clean up. Then, later on at Picidilli Circus, video freaks were gobbled up by Pac-man, bombed by Astroides or dodged the bombs in Donkey Kong. There was always something to do, even if it was checking out Spectrum or HBO. These were the gimmicks of our times, who knows what we’ll think of next. 132 s o tvswvj zva WWW David Lee Becky Lemke Ron Lemke Staci Lindberg Todd Lindberg Allan Lindgren Jeanne Lindholm Jill Macosek Mike Marthaler Jody Mattson Judy McAlindon Elizabeth McAllister Jeannine McDonald Pamela McDuffy Mary McLennan John McPherson 134 Mark Meyer James Michael Kim Miller Pam Miller Adrienne Mooneyham Larry Morgan Jackie Mulliner John Muszynski David Myers Raeann Mysliwiec Jill Nauman Rod Neal William Neeley Andy Nelson Bill Nelson Brad Nelson 135 Dating: The Want to be let in on a well-kept secret? Females aren't the only ones subject to feel butterflies in their stomachs about dating. Males too, have been known to shake in fear at the idea of asking someone out. For instance, the typical guy has had his eye on that special girl for ages, but it seems that every time he gets up the courage to ask her out, she either walks away or is with a few of her close friends, about twenty of them walking down the hall in a herd. Once he does manage to get her alone, his voice cracks, and he knows he’s blown it. But wait, she’s smiling. She says YES.” His eyes wide open in disbelief, and his chin drops about a foot, letting out a highpitched, REALLY?” But in an instant his cool is regained, and his thoughts turn to the evening that lies ahead. Number one on his mind is his method of transportation, after all. his car is his baby. Deciding it’s too late to bang out the dents, he does his best in talking dad into using the family car. Also on his mind is the cost of their upcoming date. He is more than willing to spend whatever it takes to make this first date extra special, because he hopes that from here on his dates with her will be basically cheap, the chief expense being popcorn in front of her t.v. Untold Story For most girls, a date is not just something to do on an otherwise dull Friday night. No sir! A hot date constitutes the event of the season — to be dreamed about beforehand explicitly, to be put in everyone's notes being handed around in boring classrooms. After all, doesn’t the entire student body know about it — maybe even before she did?! When he first approached her about going out. she gave him the old “WHO ME? smile, when in reality she had been doing everything to get him to notice her. That was just an accident the time she tripped over her shoelace and almost landed on him. Finally, here he was, asking the big question. Of course she already has plans with her girlfriends, but if they don’t understand, who will? As visions of prom corsages and his class ring dance through her head, she worries over what to wear. Although she spends every paycheck on clothes — she just hasn’t a thing! What will he think of her? What will he tell his friends? Will there be a second date? Surprisingly enough, these questions are not only hers ... but his too!!! They were selected this year on a basis of a 3.91 grade point average or better. These seven special students show qualities of perseverance and concentration to enable them to attain this high honor. As they near graduation along with many other seniors, a lot of academic hardships are brought to mind. They remember memorizing geometry theorems, disecting baby pigs in Biology, writing contrast and comparision papers, and of course the big Hamlet test. But they liked being able to bring home their report cards without the fear that some others faced. The 1983 Orator Staff congratulates these people who have achieved academic recognition this year. 146 Honor Graduates Annette Alexander Stephen Kirscht Andrew Anderson Babeite Knibb Steven Anschutz Caroline Kroening Robert Antony Patti Lacina John Armstrong Jeanne Lindholm Robert Berk Jill Macosek Susan Bryant Judith McAlindon Donald Bursell Jeannine McDonald Daniel Cameron Mark Meyer Claudia Cassidy Lawrence Morgan Collette Cassidy David Myers Marcella Chiodo Raeann Mysllwiec Nancy Dexter Jill Nauman Hien Doan Andrew Nelson James Dorr John Otto Christine Edstrom Lisa Otto Jon Eggers Michele Popowski Susan Faulds Jody Rasmussen Gayle Foster Steven Rice Robert Green Larry Roberts Mark Hammel Timothy Seiffert Deanna Hanek Robert Smude William Harrer Monica Sweere Mary Hopkins Kimberly Tappe Paula Horvath Todd Taylor 8yron Johnson Julie Trager David Jordheim Jill Trebesch Timothy Joyce Linda Wolter 147 148 1983 Orator Staff We fire!
