This theme shows your willingness to make an effort to accomplish tfiings and is important to success. Persistent effort, or spirit, properly directed in a worthwhile objective is an element found in successful careers. Friends are always a necessary ingredient for those who would become successful. One successful person told the following story on how she used her friends to help her succeed: We should commit ourselves by telling our friends what we are planning to do so that we will be ashamed not to succeed. Don’t ever give away your proxy in the matter of thinking. I wish you all much success! Sincerely, Donald Burton 1) Principal — Donald Burton 2) Assist. Principal — Gerald Hickman 3) Asst. It is a time to experience the joys of participation with Homecoming, pep fests, dances, and athletics, as well as academic clubs. Each year the challenge remains to make “our class the best yet. With crepe paper and balloons in hand, the junior class showed their artistic abilities in the hall decorating contest, but, one year of added experience made its gentle impression and left the seniors victorious. Good luck next year class of 1982. The many activities involving all the students have left the seniors with fond memories, but especially memorable was the degradation of “slave day.” It was a long day of humbling for the seniors. With their spirit and participation in school activities growing, the junior class is looking on with much anticipation to their senior year. Many times they were rated in the State polls. With a record of 7-2, it was the best showing since 1973. Tim Bird gained 1,000 yards, a feat never accomplished in the history of Henry. He was helped by a big, experienced offensive line centered around star guards Peter Diwi and John Larson. When they weren’t running, their aerial attack took over and it was awesome. They had an amazing 11-3 conference record which was good enough for 3rd place, and more importantly, 4th seating in Regional play-offs. They lost to Breck in the quarter finals mostly because of Breck’s strong goal-tending efforts. Several players made excellent contributions this season. The playing of T. Hirsch attracted many college and pro scouts. His talent for skating, handling the puck, and scoring is awesome. T. Majkozak and G. (Slips) Shopek also scored many goals. Tryouts in the spring are long hours of stretching out, getting those kicks up, and remembering dances; but in the long run it is very much worthwhile for those girls who do make it. All of the dancelines spend their spare time making and learning new dances and as a result the students of PHHS get to fill our eyes with the pretty colors and smiles of the dancelines. 80 1) Hi-Lite Cap. — N. From there, tradition evaporated as President Nancy Taus, Vice President John Larson, Secretary Thelma Wittman and Treasurer Steve Pennaz, sought to lead the group to do its own thing. Newly selected activities include the Thanksgiving food drive, trip to the Chanhas-sen, a Valentine’s party at the Children’s Hospital with breakfast and luncheon meetings on the town. In order to put out an excellent paper or yearbook, you have to be a truly dedicated and hard-working person. There are deadlines to meet for which only a staff member could tell you the heartaches. But with two of the best advisers, Mr. Peterson and Mr. Carlson, everything ran smoothly. Being on one of these staffs is an honor and a privilege that only a few Henry students experience. Band on the Run This year’s band is smaller than last year, but they haven’t lost their spirit. They performed at all of the home football games this year and twice at Parade Stadium. They were led on the field by drum major, Jack Shields. The band raised money by selling towels with the school emblem on them. They also performed in an anti-litter parade and had a spring banquet. The hours that the girls spend trying to perfect their routines are very worthwhile when you see the girls perform with perfection. The Guide-Ons have changed their name to Flag Girls, and with that change came new uniforms which the girls worked for. Speech Storytelling, Serious Prose, and Humorous and Creative Expression were all among the topics that this year's speech team had to choose from. The 1981 Speech team was smaller than last year's, but irrelevant to the size of the team, they had many strong qualities. A lot of these qualities are credited to Miss Blom, who is the organizer of the speech team. Many long and hard hours are put into speeches. That hard work is really worth it when you find out the results. I Club The 1980-1981 International Club has steadily become an active organization at Henry. The club members have helped increase school spirit and friendship through the various donut dunks they have sponsored throughout the year. The advisor. Miss Mardesich. and the officers, President. The members meet every day down in the band room third hour to practice. Their harmonious voices prove that they work hard and can do the job well. This year’s president of the choir is Gloria Ram-bow. She along with the other dedicated members bring back to life a once withdrawing club with spirit and vitality. 98 Devoted Pats This year’s Pep Club consisted of bright and energetic students. Matt Lynch. He and Princes Tom Hirsch. Tim Rakos, Jeff Seiffert, and Gary Shopek were selected by the student body to rule over the Sno-Daze festivities. Tuesday was Punk-Rock Day and many punk-rockers witnessed the snowball eating contest. Mike Hermanson won that event by eating seven snowballs in three minutes. Wednesday was Celebrity Day and it was in the stars that Jay Lutz. Dan Barron. Jim Ringate. Mike Hermanson. Diana Koenigsfeld, Kim Cleve, Nat Mendez, and Lori Green would win the tug-of-war competition after school. Thursday was Urban Cowboy Day and students westernized themselves a bit. Thursday was also Ribbon Day. The girls received ribbons and the guys tried to prove themselves irresistable. The “most irresistable guy’’ was Jay Lutz who received forty-six ribbons from various girls. The week of fun ended on Friday with the annual 50’s dance. This year it included a few 60’s fans, but the majority of attention was focused on the happy days of the 50’s. “Sno-Daze ’81” proved to be an exciting week because of the spirit of the students at Henry High! 105 Royalty King Matt Lynch Sno-Daze week provided the students with activities that were popular with almost the entire student body. Through the excellent planning of the student government. Henry's Sno-Daze was on one of the few weeks when there was some snow on the ground. The outdoor festivities were a little chilly because of below zero temperatures, but the overall turnout for activities was good. The slogan for 1981 was Hit me with your best shot! Snowballs weren't flying high but students’ spirits were. The week's finale was the annual dance. Students donned their 50’s and 60’s outfits and went to bop to some tunes from the golden days. Sno-Daze week went well and gave students a little break from the dull routine of the winter months. 106 Sno-Daze 1981 1) Punk-rocker. L. Dungan. mohawk and all, shows off her piranha locker. 2) W. Now high school is here, and almost over. Think back on your school years. What have you done? Some might say “not much , but actually there is so much it’s hard to think of it all. In grade school alone many activities were there to be participated in. It was hard to get through it all, but we did. There was Brownies and Blue-Birds, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts. Boy Scouts, and Camp Fire Girls, the Halloween and birthday parties, and being “the milk monitor, a Jr. fireman, or a safety patrol. In jr. high you started getting involved in sports and in various sports offered. Then comes high school and the dancelines, marching band, N.H.S., speech team, International Club. M.S.C., cheerleading, student government, choir, yearbook staff, school paper, and work. Then various other clubs and organizations that are so busy that you don't have time to do your school work anymore, but you get through it. Then there's the special activities - parties, dances, dating, or just bumming around with your friends.so much to do that you can’t find time for some things. By the time you are a senior, you will have gone through many experiences, some exciting and some torturing. You will have experienced thirteen “first” days of school, six and one-half months of Christmas vacation, and about three years of summer vacation. In just your high school years, you will have witnessed about twenty home football games, thirty basketball games, and forty hockey games. You will get to school somehow on four-hundred icy mornings, worn out about twenty pairs of Levis, listened to Mr. Burton’s “word to the wise” approximately thirty-six times, and climbed about five thousand-one hundred and twenty flights of stairs. Graduation is suddenly upon you. You worry about your too large cap and your tassle hanging in your face. School is no longer a worry, but something more important is — life. You look back at school then and wish that life was as easy and as carefree as the times you had in your younger years. 109 Big Brother Is Watching The Senior Class Play. ‘‘1984,” written by George Orwell, was a successful adventure for those participating in and those attending the play. When it was written, it was a forecast of what was to happen in 1984. It was thought that the world would consist of two groups fighting each other for world domination in a war to end all wars. To get people on Big Brother s (the party leader) side. the party brainwashed all the members of the community so they would even believe that 2 + 2 = 5! The performance was an excellent one thanks to the super instruction of the director, Mr. J. Sylwester. He felt that the play should make us look ahead and see just how close to the predictions by Orwell we have gotten. How far have we gotten? Remember, Big Brother is Watching! 1) Guard. S.
