The next two weeks were filled with such memorable activities as Coronation, where the court was presented with new crowns from the school, the 2nd Annual Car Show, Trike Race. Afterwards, the Pats played a challenging football game with Southwest which they lost, 21-14. CLASS OF ’78 BRINGS US SOUTH FOR “TOM SAWYER” The Junior Class Play, “Tom Sawyer,” was a big success. This year the play was not only made up of Juniors, but sophomores and freshmen. Part of the reason the play was such a success was that it reminded all who watched it of those happy and carefree days of their past. It was a glimpse into the uncomplicated and romantic days of an age long past, where the steamboat was king of the river and the “wild west” really started at the banks of the Mississippi. (A.) Becky Thatcher (N. Sorenson) discovers that (T. Reilly) Tom Sawyer has been two timing. (B.) Ben Rogers (T. Harkins), Lyda Hollis (M. Borca) and Jim Hollis (J. Anderson) are catchin catfish. (C.) This year’s third annual summer musical, “The Music Man,” turned out to be quite a success. The amount of sweat and hard work put into this play was really worth everyone’s while. The play attracted about 900 people over a three day engagement. Many thanks should be given to our own music men, Mr. Sylvester, Mr. Traficante, and Mr. Oakvik, as well as all the students who participated in it. Such representation on Henry’s stage can and will be well looked upon by everyone. (A) The quartet and Marion, played by R. Holzheu, sing “Lida Rose.” (B) Cast of “Music Man cheer to the great success of the play. (C) K. Goski readies herself for her next scene. (D) Tommy Dillis, played by Joe Anderson, tries to make a quick get-a-way. (E) The pit band plays music to a scene in the play. (F) Harold Hill catches the interest of the town boys. (J) Harold Hill and Marcellus Wash-burn, played by G. Nesbitt, sing “The Sadder but Wiser Girl for Me . 14 WHERE THE MUSIC COMES FROM FALL DAYS ARE NEW BEGINNINGS “ANNE FRANK” LIVES AGAIN The Senior Class did a great job of performing “Anne Frank.” The ease was very limited in size but put out a show with huge success. The technical crew worked hard to transform the Henry stage into a realistic looking attic. The play itself took place during WWII in Holland where many Jews had to hide out or submit to Hitler and his troops. The Frank and VanDan families were forced to hide out in an unused attic. They remained unhurt for three years and the whole time the twelve year-old Anne Frank recorded her thoughts of life and her surroundings. Though the families came to devestating ends, Anne once wrote, “In spite of everything, I still believe people arc good at heart.” (A) Anne Frank (S. Fridgen) gets a childish thrill out of wearing Mrs. Van Dan’s fur coat. (B) The beginning of the end. Anne’s last look at the attic and the life that she had just begun to love. (C) Micp (M. (E) One of the private moments that only Anne and her diary knew about. (F) Mr. Frank, Mr. Dussel. and Peter try to wrestle a loaf of bread away from Mr. Van Dan who has been caught stealing food at night. (G) Mr. Kraeler (H. Roberts) brings another to live in the crowded attic. He is Mr. Jan Dussel (J. Anderson). (H) The Nazi’s push the traitors out the door and into misery. (I) Anne and Peter console each other after a family quarrel. 19 THE KING’S COURT . . . (D) On Wednesday the Henry students received a visit from “KISS. (E) The Tug-of-War sought after the groups that had timing and strength. DIFFERENT WAYS FOR DIFFERENT DAYS Sno-Daze ’78 started with the choosing of our Sno-Daze button and slogan, “Sno Foolin.” Then on Friday, January 20, the senior class voted on the top five. The next week the whole school had the opportunity to vote for King by dropping money in their candidate’s bucket during lunch. In one week the auditorium was in a hush as queen Julie Michnowski was brought on stage. She proceeded to walk back and forth between the five nervous guys. During the moment of truth, she gave a kiss and planted the crown on our Sno King of ’78 ... Larry Whitman. On Celebrity Day the students came as their favorite star of stage or screen. On Tuesday everyone got “patriotic” and wore red and gray. Wednesday was Overall Day and Henry looked like it came right off of the farm! The best-dressed really looked sharp on Thursday and ended up skiing at Birch Park. Friday was a Fabulous 50's Day and we closed out the week with a Donut Dunk and a dance in the new gym with the Talismen Band. M.S.C. GIVES LESSON IN BLACK AWARENESS This year’s Black History Week was celebrated February 20-24. The theme for the week’s program was “Black Awareness.” The program consisted of poetry, some written by Henry’s own students, modern dance, skits, and a tribute to great Blacks. It showed that the Blacks at Henry are truly aware of their heritage. (F) Yvette Brewer puts feeling into her poem while Fclecia docs a modern dance. (G) Senior Robert Robinson sings out beautifully. (H) Black students sing out the Black National Anthem. (I) Senior Stephanie Volantc was Mistress of Ceremonies. SCROOGE! “Mr. Scrooge” was this year’s choir Christmas performance. The musical had a matinee and two night performances on December 14, 15, 16. The players had only two weeks to prepare for the show, and with the co-operation of the director, Mr. Sylwcs-tcr, and the Choir director, Mr. Traficantc, the play was a marvelous success. It truly brightened up the holiday season. (A) The cast of Mr. Scrooge presents their Grand Finale in song. (B) Scrooge (J. Victor) promises that he'll keep Christmas in his heart always. (C) During the “Dream of Christmas Past. Scrooge secs himself as a young man. (T. Hagstrom) while his fiance sings about a time Very Long Ago. (D) Tiny Tim (J. (E) After Scrooge has his terrible Dream of Christmas Future. he jumps for joy and repents for all of his past cruelty. Even though Minneapolis broke a record for having its coldest winter ever, the Henry students kept warm and active. There were games to keep every sports fan busy, and if the game wasn’t going as well as hoped, the dancelines kept the audiences alive. We had the delivery of Valegrams on the day of our Winter Pep Fest, and the last day of school before the energy break. Even though it was cold, everyone made it a fun and memorable winter. SNOW HIGHLITES OUR NEW GYM! To many people of the Henry community it was a dream come true. After many years of hard work, meetings, planning, and waiting the school finally got its new gym. The dedication ceremony was held Sunday, February 5th, and the band, Riflcttes, Guide-ons, and dancclincs performed. Many important community members spoke, and old alumni were acknowledged. Finally, the Henry Community Gymnasium became ours! (A) After the outside shell of the gym was finished, the builders started to pave the parking lot. (B) Mr. Burton accepts the gym at the dedication ceremony. (C) The new boy’s locker room’s in the basement. (D) A builder puts the finishing touches on the doorway. (F.) The different lines get ready to perform. 27 ill ill WAIL PROPHET MAN, WAIL Henry's entrant in the “MHSL One Act Play” was Tclcmachus Clay. We placed third in Region V competition. The success of the play was based mostly on the closeness of the cast. They received perfect scores on the last day of the play, and combined with the scores of the previous Wednesday, they received a superior rating. They were not, however, selected to advance to the state competition. Tom Reilly, Cathy Hilger, Jo Mary Borman. Jeff Victor Shawn Dunn, Andy Weeks LcAnn Lindgren, Don Duren berger. Colleen Bourgeois. In beating North, the Pats staged an excellent second half comeback to regain the Northside Trophy. In the second half of the season, the Patriots lack of size and speed hurt and they ended the season with a 2-6 record. A strange part of this year’s season was the weather. It caused two games, the football preview, and the non-conference game at Fergus Falls to be cancelled. (D) Row 1: T. Olandcr. D. Warnke, A. Clark. J. Pudlick. S. Strcnsrud, G. Smith, J. Ncvison, P. S8 BOYS BETTER WATCH OUT Again this year girl's hockey has been a fun way to spend an early Saturday morning. There were about twenty girls from grade 9 thru grade 12 participating in this vigorous sport. One of the highlights of the season was when they played the teachers. We have to call that one a draw. Many of the girls stated that their brand of hockey was not as rough and aggessivc as the boys, but it was loads of fun. (A) Another fantastic faccoff by M. GO ■ 61 TRACKSTERS KEEP ON TRACKIN’ Track is a very popular sport at Henry. Our teams have been strong, enthusiastic and ready to compete. The season comes at the perfect time of the year. Spring time is a time of new beginnings and after a long winter the minds of the athletes are now all psyched up. Henry is very fortunate to have a strong long distance running group. Both the girl’s team and guy’s team were lucky to have such gifted and talented people. Along with the distance runners, the team consisted of many sprinters, hurdlers, field eventers and managers. They all hope for a good season and to send our all-star. Deb Berger, to State. (A)Henry leads the field in the home stretch. (B) Sandy Tcslow shows the form of a good shot putter. (C) J. Creative writing, speech, and chess require a great deal more than a rhyme with no reason or a speech full of inanities or a simple thoughtless move. They require a kind of thinking that only certain people can give. Who are these people? They are the ones who can write a poem that lives up to its meaning. They arc the ones who can give a speech and catch the eye and ear of everyone in their audience. Finally, they arc the ones who can get so caught up in a game of chess that nothing else matters. H 71 BAND SPIRIT HIGH If you did not sec the Henry marching band last summer in the Aquatcnial parade or in the Anoka Halloween Parade last fall, you just might have seen them out on the football field at a football game or in the stands at a basketball game. These are only a few of the many activities the band participated in throughout the '77-78 school year. Other activities included playing at the Northstar’s game at the Met. Center and also at the opening of the new Camden Bridge. So, if you did not sec them last fall or last summer look again, they were probably there. (A) Drum Major Mike Oakvik. They danced at many activities including the grand finale of the “Music Man,” the National Karate Championship, the H.E.N. Mass Band concert, and the dedication of the new gym. All this beyond the usual summer and fall parades and football games. The lines consisted of many new girls, but they performed with professional precision. The bright and high-kicking Pastel Pats, the snapping and smiling Front Five, and the precision moves of the Hi-Litcs were the three lines for this year. They made the Henry area proud to have them as representatives of our school. 74 (A) Pastels start off the Anoka parade. (B) Hi-Lites dance to the sounds of the marching band. The store has helped sell candy for new band uniforms, shirts and hats for the Booster Club, and pens for the Minority Council. They also ran a contest to name the school store. Mr. Greenhagen claimed, “It kept the seniors on their toes.” The newspaper staff worked diligently all year to get the most important and worthwhile news to the rest of the school. Our yearbook staff this year tried hard to meet all their deadlines. Yet, they found the book was just more work than they anticipated. In spite of this, the staff pulled together to make the book available. Dan Roberts Karen MacArthur Larry Whitman Kris Olson..... ........ EVERYONE FILLS A NEED This year’s touring show is something in which everyone could get involved. Although there may be small parts, there arc no small actors. Everyone has a chance to give a piece of their talent, to perform together with many other people, and to make a program that puts a sparkle in many person’s eye. Made up of German and Spanish students, the club organizes many activities to raise money for A.F.S. UNITED VOICES REVISE “SCROOGE” This year’s second trimester choir consisted of approximately 75 students, the vast majority of whom took part in the musical play “Scrooge”. In two weeks they produced a play that was very well received by the audience on the two nights that it was staged. Without a doubt, much credit went to Mr. Traficante, Mr. Oak-vik and Mr. Sylwestcr for the ma-chanics of the play. Of course, more credit had to go to the choir itself for two such fine performances. It was filled with many projects and activities. They sold carmel apples for homecoming, and Henry pens were sold during the year in the school store. They were also involved, along with some White students, in creating a new organization called the Zebra Club, which was put together to iron out some of the Black and White problems at Henry. The Minority Student Council also put on the Black History program. (A) Fclccia and Denise try out their voices at practice. (B) Christine gets into her modern dance. Wc have the spirit-yes we do! Who leads this cheer at every football, basketball, hockey game, and our auditoriums? The cheerleaders! One person in particular is looked upon by the student as a guide, their counselor. Mr. Fricke is the 12th grade counselor. For the last four years he has served the class of ’78 and this is his message to the class: The future belongs to those who prepare for it. Set high goals, plan carefully, and work to achieve. There is no better time to start than today. Robert Fricke © Sgt. Bud Gcrtz, Alvin Whitfield Police Liason Officer, Hall Guard Robert Trcacy, Ncvin Smith Jr. Counselor. Frosh. Counsel A WORD TO THE WISE . .. When you discuss your class theme, “We go forth to new beginnings,” the question naturally appears as to what beginnings or stepping-stones to choose. The one primary influence that points to the stepping-stone of pcrserverance, thrift, and many others is COMMON SENSE. Common sense should be more common, for the application of it will result in your choosing the right stepping-stones to cross the stream of life and gain a place on the bank of success. All the best! Don Burton Donald Burton, Principal Grace Wiggen, Marlene Daniel Media Center Margaret Schacffncr. Mary Jordan Business Mary Sargent, Nevin Smith Coordinators SPECIALISTS HELP US PREPARE FOR LIFE This year the Media Center offered the services of a federally funded career resource specialist. The center also served as a place where the students could get together and study. The Business, Home Ec., and Music departments ran smoothly this year. They offered a wide range of class electives for the students. Each department thinks it is important for students to learn in non-academic fields as well. The people who work behind the students on the work program arc often over-looked. The Coordinators serve both the school and the community. Teresa Plummer, Theodore Wyrowski Career Specialist, Business THEY TEACH US HOW TO SPEAK This year the English classes have run very smoothly. The teachers have attributed this fact to an effort shown by both students and themselves. As for class selections, they feel they offer a wide variety but would like to see more courses dealing with writing skills. At the moment, however, they arc strapped for funds and classrooms remain too large. For- eign Language classes, on the other hand, are smaller but full of activity. Students taking either German or Spanish learn more than just another language. They learn of beliefs and cultures found in other parts of the world. The students arc able to share their views on these people by belonging to the International Club which the department runs. WIDE VARIETY OF CLASSES OFFERRED The History Department has been putting a greater emphasis on world study this year. They feel students may not be receiving a good enough background in this area of history. For this reason many world history courses were offered throughout the year. A big event for the Phy. Ed. Department was the opening of the new gym. The department thinks that the gym will give them a chance to spread out and teach in a more effective and modern way. Also, they arc looking forward to having our home games played at Henry. Art, as always, has been a favorite elective for students and this year proved no different. The department offered a wide variety of different artistic expression courses. Jerry Rasmusson, Richard Fa lor Social Studies 1 Robert Scikkula. Donald Bergerson Social Studies - 41 1JM 103 Ronald Fuller, Kenneth Bclkholni Industrial Arts 104 SPIRIT, ENTHUSIASM FOUND IN CLASSES This year the Math Department has been out on a campaign to get more students interested. Their thoughts arc that knowing math is a necessity in life today. An interesting addition to the Science Department is a Physics teacher, Mr. Fridgen. He spends his mornings teaching at Henry and his afternoons teaching at North. The department is really getting into the HEN spirit. Students taking Industrial Arts find a lot of spirit and enthusiasm in their classes. The class selection offered by the department is wide in variety to meet the students’ interests. 105 A SPECIAL THANKS We often forget about the people behind the scenes. The class is very large and like all the other classes they will bloom into leaders. Freshmen always tend to be a little on the quiet side, and this year it seemed to be no different. When they filled the halls, lunchroom, auditorium or library, there was the quiet or enthusiasm we needed! Henry produces nothing but the best and in a few short years these freshmen will be the leaders of the school and this is the moment for which we all wait. (A) Row l-M. Harrcr, M. Woltcr, C. Knowlcr.
