Returning only three starters, and losing or having key players play hurt because of injuries, the team seemed only a step away from having a successful season. Losing several close games and getting bad breaks, the gridders could easily have improved on their 3-6 season record. Led by co-captains jeff Arf and jim Modeen, the team gavetheir best every game. Honored at the end of the season were all-city picks Tom Borgen, at offensive back, and Bruce Sa- line as a defensive lineman. With many finejuniors returning next years' team should do well. PM This year's MSHSL One-Act Contest Play, Animal Farm , was interpreted from the book to play form by the cast itself. The play, by George Orwell, took third place at the Region Five Play Festival held at Albany High School. The plot dealt with nine animals on a farm that rebel against their master, Farmer jones. The two pigs, Napoleon and Squealer, lead rebellion, and eventually rule over all the other animals. They become increasingly humanistic until they, like Farmer jones, walk on two legs. The play shows that absolute powere corrupts absolutely. il v lk , K .t 0' r. V.. 1 ,,'.'ZW , fy y 2' xx f Ve' fi f, 1 . aw gm, fa -g,,,,m1,.. . His sentiments were spoken freely, honestly, and without reserve. Two hundred years ago, he addressed the Virginia House of Burgesses where the issue of resistance to the mother country and freedom was at stake. Patrick Henry, our school's namesake, took the stand on the life or death issue by summarizing his speech with, I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death! We, as students of Patrick Henry, might look deeper into his meaning and then turn to look at our own meaning. We must realize our potential for living in reality, and act as Patrick Henry did. We can not be of the great numbers who - having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not - do nothing. A high school is an attempt to help educate us to deal with life and reality. Teachers, administrators, and aides cannot do this alone. It all depends upon us the students. Thebattle, sir, is not to the strong alone, it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. We must be open to new ideas, be willing to accept change, and, above all, be flexible. To stay with and live in the past is not good, to use the pasts experiences is wise: I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. The question before us now is of great importance. lt will decide our course and even the course others will pursue in life. Are we to be victims of the future, or will we, as Patrick Henry was, have a spoken and heard voice in the directions of our lives? l . l ESQ ' wi-ay K EK ' f ixf lx- I K-W X , I M, J, x I . V J , 1. Work Program helps kids prepare for their future. By being at school at 7:30 every morning and taking the necessary classes, they are able to leave by 10: 30 and report to their jobs. There were over 150 students involved in Work Program this year and they all found it very rewarding. y I T40 . We have not been born just to wonder at technology but to sense what it means to be alive, to become devoted to that life, and to be contemplative about it. Our acts of faith begin with the poetry in our own hearts, and we are to become the listeners to the poetry in the heart of others. We have enough of the poet, or the artist in us to respond not only to beauty but also to give some of the beauty we ourselves can actually create into the keeping of others. In the brief time we have been together here, we have come to realize that man does not compose his music, pen his poetry, pass his laws, work out his problems, paint his pictures, or participate in sports andfor speech activities in a vacuum. We have come to realize too that, as Americans, we have made our mistakesg but we have not lost hope. We now know that hope survives even the vanishing of our dreams and that it remains as the germ of those dreams that are yet to be born in our common future: there will yet be new poetry, new music, new art, and new life. We have learned that what is really important in life does not really change. Most of us suffer much of our distress not in the fact that the realities that matter go away, but in the frustration of our artificial goals. This is not to dismiss tragedy, for we have learned of that too as we have sat together at the feet ofthe masters. That side of life, however, is lessthan half the story. No agony is sufficient to cancel out the fact that we are alive and that thought, emotion, love, and reason go on inside us. Doreen B. Savage fm 9. 1 E in Ka ,EXW FF P1 Y 5 .
