MSHSL One-Act Play Each year schools wishing to participate begin planning a one-act play for the Minnesota State High School League's One-Act Play Contest. This year Henry's offering was ANTHEM, by Ayn Rand. The students chosen for the cast adapted the script from the novelette themselves. ANTHEM is a play which foreshadows a futuristic society in which individuality simply doesn't exist. The crux of the drama centers on two characters. Liberty 5-3000 and Equality 7-2521, and their desperate struggle to become individuals w hich, of course, is forbidden. They do eventually break away and decide to make a life for themselves free from unenlightened people who don’t have any self respect, who work only for the We . The world “I was forbidden. The play did very well, taking a first in District and third in Regional competition. ABOVfc Responding to the bdl. we give the salute before going to work. During our morning auditorium, students had a chance to show off their many talents. A Dixieland band, Shirley Temple, hillbilly singers, a piano player, and other acts contributed to our talent show. A supper was held for parents and students that night in our lunchroom. After supper a big carnival was held where kids of all ages could find something that interested them. Many school clubs ran booths. People were found doing anything from having their picture sketched by a Henry artist to dunking for apples. A big thanks to all who made this great night possible. Since it was held on Friday night, December 21st, the official start of vacation, everyone was in a festive mood. This event, sponsored by Student Government, is not only fun for the student body but good for the community, for it brings people from the neighborhood together to take part in a Henry activity. $8 Pats Do Turkey Trot Gobblers As tradition would have it, this year’s Gobblers Dance, held on November 10 at the Downtown YWCA, again had the girls asking the guy of their choice for an evening of dancing prior to Thanksgiving. Although much planning went into the dance, for the turnout of people the dance was a disappointment. They may not have won every meet, but they gave a good show. Mr. Hocl. the swim team Coach, says he has a lot of faith in his boys. He feels that they have given all they had. They won 7 out of 10 meets, which isn’t bad. They have high hopes of making it to the District meet, and who knows, maybe to the Regional. It’s true that to get into the club you must have a 3.2 grade average, but there are other qualities that are needed. This year’s N.H.S. group has tried to build each of those qualities within themselves, while having a good time. They started what may become a tradition; selling apples on the day of a football game, they had a hay-ride. went Christmas caroling at University Hospital, and planned a trip for the spring. As Pres. Brad Boucher put it. “This year, our N.H.S. group has combined having a good time with being a service to the school and community. N.H.S. has not been just a name, but instead people willing to work toward a common goal.” Miss Blom and Mr. Carlson, the advisors, put it this way. “The 1973-74 N.H.S. has consisted of outstanding, interested students willing to work for their school and organization. The answer to that question is because they decided to concentrate on becoming a good concert band, which they proved by giving two fantastic concerts. The first concert was very different from others given because of the use of an added instrument called the Moog Synthesizer. This instrument really made the concert sparkle. The next concert was the big Spring Concert, which was one of the best ever. All in all, this year’s band has shown themselves to be one of the best Henry has ever known. 128 BAND: ROW !; L.Gilbcrt. They did many things to prove they were enthusiastic. They went out for Halloween, collecting for UNICEF, and they made valentine favors for the Heart Hospital. Besides being a service to the community they had a lot of fun doing other things, including a Progressive Dinner and a Pot Luck Supper. 136 Pep club has a lot of school spirit. The girls in the club did a lot this year, especially during football season. Their activities included painting signs for the games and just cheering the teams on to victory. The Witty Writers Creative Writing Creative Writing is a new club this year at Henry. Although it is a scheduled class, students work at their own pace. Their main project this year was to turn out another creative poster, which was sold to students. Will this year's class hold a future famous poet? Only time will tell, but judging from this year's work, it’s quite possible. 130 Hungry? Try.. . D.E.C.A. The School Store, run by D.E.C.A., was a big success this year. The big difference from other years was due to the amount of new items sold. Food, candy, and school supplies were among those most commonly bought in the store. US Looking Early Into the Future Work Program Work Program is a plan for the future. About four or five years ago the work program was a very small and selective group, but now there are almost 200 people in it. Those people reported to school at the bright, early hour of 7:30. Going to school early enabled the students to get done with classes at 10:30. After that, each student had a hard day at the office, or store, or garage to look forward to. As a result of the work program more students got work experience behind them, and possibly a step into the future. 140 TOP LEFT: Mr. Schulte ROW I: M Misencik, K.Pcrfctti, S.Johnson. M.Turpin.
