I mi n NeA.poi.is PUOLIC LI OQAftV THE 1967 ORATOR Annual Publication of Patrick Henry High School Minneapolis, Minnesota Volume 26 What is a school without students? A pile of brick and cement standing idle. Teachers instructing empty desks. Administrators regulating air space. Counselors advising blank record cards. The school is a trumpery without young thirsting minds reaching out for knowledge, strong sturdy bodies requesting training, inexperience looking for responsibility, and big hearts seeking out friendship. STUDENTS are the heartbeat throbbing through the halls of Henry; they are the LIFE LINE OF THE SCHOOL. 2 STUDENTS SENIORS...........6-35 SENIOR HONORS .... 36 SENIOR AWARDS .... 37 SENIOR ADVISORY . . .38 CLASS OFFICERS......39 HOMEROOMS........40-57 ORGANIZATIONS PATRIOT.............. 74 ORATOR................75 STUDENT COUNCIL . .76-77 N.H.S.................78 CLUBS..............79-89 ASSISTANTS.........90-91 MUSIC..............92-99 FACULTY PRINCIPALS...........60 COUNSELORS...........61 SPECIAL SERVICE......61 LIBRARIANS...........62 OFFICE STAFF.........62 TEACHERS..........63-69 MAINTENANCE.......70-71 SPORTS CHEERLEADERS ... 102 103 FALL.............104-109 WINTER...........110-125 SPRING...........126-131 G.A.A............ 132-133 TABLE OF CONTENTS ACTIVITIES HOMECOMING.... 136-141 SADIE HAWKINS...... 142 NINTH GRADE PLAY... 143 CLASS PLAY......144-145 OPERETTA........146-147 HALL OF FAME....148-153 SENIOR INDEX____154-161 STUDENT INDEX . . . 162-166 YEARBOOK INDEX . . . 167 3 SENIORS SENIOR HONORS SENIOR AWARDS SENIOR ADVISORY CLASS OFFICERS HOMEROOMS HEARTBEAT OF HENRY Seniors Perform Vital Role in Life at Henry The procession of Henry's graduating classes reaches back into the past and stretches forward 1o the future. Through hard work, this year's spirited and ambitious Seniors enrich Henry's tradition. From the hectic rush to class on the opening day of school to the final slomming of locker doors, enthusiastic Seniors lead the student body. The excitement of the first football game, the tearful joy over the selection of the Homecoming Queen, the nervousness before class ploy tryouts, and the thrill of Prom night linger in the mind of eoch senior as he receives his diploma. The Rose Reese award was given to Bradley Johnson in recognition of his interest in foreign and world affairs. For her exceptional interest and achievement in American History, Carol Mielke received the Daughters of the American Revolution award. ATKINSON For centuries individuals in education, graduation speakers, and parents have been saying to young people, 'You are living at a wonderful time and in an exciting era!' This statement has always been true, and it is true now. As our civilization has advanced, the physical rigors associated with existence have lessened, but the intellectual ond the physiological rigors have increased. An understanding of our world ond our universe is ossential to your well being in this complex world. Education, coupled with common sense, will make it possible for you to enjoy, to the fullest, this sojourn called life. PRINCIPAL A. B. SCHULTZ âAs you leave Henry High School, I would like to share a few thoughts with you regarding life's requirements. Always remember thof there is small sotisfoction to be gained from doing things that hold little difficulty. It is the completion of stubborn tasks that brings a keen sense of worth to the man who wins the struggle. The overcoming of difficulty and disappointment is necessary to understand why success is so gratifying. Be thankful for disappointments, even though at the time it is difficult to realize that all fhings work together for the good. Be grateful for adversity, for we know thot by this means man develops the skills necessary to direct his own destiny. May your life contain good fortune and happiness. 60 Su lor ton discusses I ho curriculum possibilities of h ' progrom with junior counselor Mr Robert fricke Counseling Staff Focuses on Future Engrotted in hit work. Totol membership increased by about fifty percent from lost year. The Hi-Y program is divided essentially into three different fields: service, education, and recreation. Several of the all-school service projects included: speaking on behalf of the United Fund, participating in the Goodwill clothing drive, giving Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to the needy, and contributing ice skates to less fortunate children. The educational aspect of Hi-Y is achieved through speokers, films, trips, and the Palm Sunday and Lenten Breakfasts. Hi-Y offers a wide range of recreation, including football and basketball tournaments, joint parties with Y-Teens, gym and swim nights, a Best Girls' Banquet, and the highlight of the year, Sno-Day, which is held of Camp Iduhapi. Orchestra Progresses Under New Director This year Dr. Price, Henry's choir director, assumed the additional task of directing the orchestra due to the departure of Mr. Barnett. More thon ever, the orchestra has skillfully blended their talents in conjunction with the choir os well as playing alone. The orchestra added extra spice to the annual choir Christmas Concert by accompanying them os they sang the Christmas Oratorio by Saint-Saens. One of the greatest contributions the orchestra mode, other than their own concert, was playing background music for the operetta. Many hours of hard work went into preparing the correct sound and right effect for the Oriental music of The Mikado. The first place ratings were received in Duluth, Montevideo, Hopkins, and in the Northside Parade. Bond members spent many hot summer evenings diligently practicing precision marching to achieve these ratings. While parade engagements declined during the school year, the void was filled by football and basketball half time performances. Indoor practices led to the annual Spring Concert in April, entitled Moods in Motion . Instead of ending the year, the colorful concert stylishly set the stage for the new parade season. This year has been no exception with Gory Benson ond his uninhibited performers weaving their musical web in numerous auditoriums. Along with school songs and the Pep Band's favorite Tijuana Brass melodies prepared especially for these auditoriums, the Pep Band ploys music for the Pep Club and Cheerleader's skits, and occasionally for skits of their own. In addition, the Pep Band finds time for early morning rehearsals with Henry's dance lines. Traveling with the band this summer proved to be demanding work for Henry's accessory units. Rewarding experiences ond memorable occasions shine through the vision of long dusty parade routes and the remembrance of the hard work involved. This work includes not only practicing long hours for synchronization, but also doing their own choreography and designing their own costumes. The accessory units, consisting of the Front Five, Postel Pats, and Hi-lites, continue a long line of tradition at Henry. Judging by the whistles, cheers, and ovations received during parades, auditoriums, pregame and half time shows, these units will continue to be a vital part of school life. Yum-Yum, a young maid, loves Nanki-Poo, a disguised pauper who is really the son of the Mikado of Jopan. Complications arise when Nonki-Poo discovers Yum-Yum's betrothal to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner of Titipu. Under the pretense of being executed, Nonki-Poo elopes with Yum-Yum to escape the fate of being beheaded or marrying Katisha, an old maid from the Mikado's court. It is, of course, its students. It is a seventh grader playing intramural basketball, a sophomore struggling through a geometry problem, or old friends bowling on their senior trip. Looking back, the graduating senior recalls his first doys at Henry and remembers his lost feeling before becoming a part of the school. He remembers the excitement and prestige of entering senior high. Memories of challenging subjects, worthwhile organizations, and entertaining activities crowd his mind. All of these experiences were a rich and rewarding part of his life. Now, however, the graduation ceremony seems to ring the deoth bell of this life, but the heart surges again during the senior trip. All night long the dancing, bowling, swimming, and talking with classmates continue. At this last meeting of the class of '67, some whoop with joy while others shed tears. Without exception, everyone has some mixed emotions. Then, looking forward, the new graduate realizes that he will hove a place in the adult world. He is comforted too in knowing that his abandoned station will be quickly filled by another student eagerly awaiting his opportunity to gain experience and to make his individual contribution. And so his heritage is passed on âthe LIFE LINE OF THE SCHOOL will continue to march forward and to pass through the halls of Henry. JUS 168 MHC JUN 0 4 336
