A school is more than a building of brick, steel and wood. It is a place within which young and old alike grow in understanding of their fellowmen. It is here that youth develops a philosophy of life and the older change their philosophies to fit the ever-changing environment. The school is the house of education. Education is continuous from birth to death. Man's every action is a learning process. When a man ceases to learn, he is spiritually dead though physically alive. This condition fosters frustration and unhappiness. Young people, seniors, be alert, use all of your talents and capabilities upon which to build a successful and wonderful life — through education. A philosopher in the fourteenth century said — You will make more friends during one turn of the hour glass by being sincerely interested in other people, than you will make in a lifetime by trying to get other people interested in you. Take the thoughts of this philosopher and weave them into the fabric of your conduct and relationship with people. Such an attitude, I am sure, will give you a happy life, filled with unselfish service to your fellow man. This is a tremendous need in these restless years. We, the faculty, who stay on os you leave, will be stimulated from time to time as you return to visit and when we hear of you and your many successful activities. Your success and happiness is a measure of our success as teachers. Keyword — Service Co-ordinating the activities of Henry High School is the responsibility of the administrative staff. The secretarial force, special service teachers, counselors, and librarians perform invaluable services. Insuring the efficiency and accuracy of the school records and correspondence is the secretarial staff. Available to help the students with their academic questions are the counselors, special service teachers, and librarians. Above: SECRETARIAL STAFF. Mist Pehl, Mrs. A. Schmitz. Mn. M Mlu K. Reinking. This years team, besides finishing second in the conference, gave Cleve his most prized reward of his coaching career, the Sportsmanship Trophy. Don Swanson has been Cleve's assistant for eight years. On the announcement of Cleve's retirement. Principal A. B. Schultz appointed Swanson head coach of the Henry football team. George Wemeier has been on the Henry coaching staff seven years. He is considered by Frank Cleve one of the best defensive coaches in the city. Henry 14 — West 12 Led by Al Bender's toe, the Henry team defeated a tough West squad 14—12 at Parade Stadium. The Pats were behind 12—7 in the ftnal quarter when a 35 yard pass play to Bob Dehne set up the winning touchdown. Bob Shaw scored from the 19 yard line on a niffy trap play. 71 Henry 27 — Voc. 0 After a fine showing in the city preview against North, the Pats defeated a high, ly regarded Vocational team 27—0. Costly fumbles kept Henry's offense from clicking properly until late in the first quarter. Touchdowns scored on runs by halfback Bob Shaw and fullback Gary Bursch, and passes to ends Bob Dehne and Alan Bender gave Henry a victory in its season opener. Tension build during West gome. Henry 14 — Roosevelt 7 Henry 7 — Edison 6 Henry had trouble penetrating the Teddy line during the first half. A pass thrown by Butch Nordstrom to Al Bender gave the Pats their first score. A Henry fumble set up Roosevelts' only touchdown. With minutes remaining in the game and the score tied, the Henry defense recovered a fumble on the Teddy 19. Bob Shaw took the ball and ran over untouched, giving the Pats a third win. Henry defeated Edison in its fourth game of the season. The Pats had a big edge in everything except the score. Henry's one score came in the second period when Bob Shaw pushed for the final yard. Al Bender added the extra point which turned out to be the winning margin. The Tommies' chance to tie was throttled by a tremendous Pat rush that forced the Edison plocekicker to pull his kick to one side. left: Al Bender catches o touchdown pass from Butch Nordstrom. Henry 20 — Central 14 Coach Cleve summarized the Central game with the comment, We kicked them all over the field in the first half, and they returned the favor in the last half. End Bob Dehne sparked the Pats offense, scoring two touchdowns and moving the boll to the one yard line to set up Nordstrom's sneak for the third touchdown. The Pioneers scored two touchdowns in the second half before the Pats' defense could stop them. Henry 6 — Washburn 34 Woshburn, rated the best city team in ten years, smothered a spunky Henry team 34—6. This powerful, well-balanced machine ended the Pats' five game winning streak. The score was 28—0 at the end of the first half. Because of Henry's stiffened defense in the last half, Washburn only scored once more on a Henry fumble that rolled into the end zone. The defense gave way to a rugged Henry offense which dominated the second half. Richard Peterson recovered a Card fumble on Marshall's 12 to give Henry its chance. The Pots scored the winning touchdown with 1:47 remaining when Gary Bursch rushed for the final five yards. Henry 0 — South 0 Henry's Eleven, playing its last game of the season, missed winning their seventh game by inches. His team took consolation honors in the 1962 State Tournament. Seik, as his players call him, believes in a fast moving offense and a pressing defense. Bob Oian, a forward, was on the squad for the second straight year. He was rated the most improved player on the team. During the latter half of the season he averaged just short of fifteen points per game. Gary Chesner, a guard, has a lot of natural ability. Although he is small, he has tremendous spring in his leap. Chesner scored well all seoson and in February was brought up to the varsity. Mike White, a freshman center, was the strongest rebounder on the roster. Near the end of the season, he came into his own, scoring-wise, os he gained valuable experience. GAA Showers Add ’’Zest” This past year, G.A.A. received a big boost with the complete remodeling of the girls' gym. Each girl had her own locker and adequate space to dress, plus the chance to shower. Once quite poor, Henry's girls' gym facilities now rank among the best in the city. Basketball, badminton, and volleyball were offered to the entire school, while tennis and golf were offered only to the senior high girls. Sheila Staedy. Deanna Schafer. Barb Page, and Beth Yates were first to try the new showers. Gabriele Lubuzls sinks shot despite opposing efforts. THE GIRLS' TENNIS TEAM - ROW 1, M. T«-minski, C. Oppen, 8. S.vonson, M. Jones, S. The purpose of the Work Program is to provide on-the-job training to help the student discover which occupation he prefers. Students Exhibit Speech Skills The ability to express oneself clearly is needed now more than ever. Students at Henry gain this experience by participating in speech and debate. The Speech Team, coached by Mr. Hoerschgen, provides training in a wide variety of speech skills: dramatic interpretation, original and memorized oratory, extemporaneous speaking and reading, story-telling, and discussion. The Debate Team is composed mainly of juniors. Coached by Mrs. Lucas, debaters learn the most effective ways to bring forth their ideas. This year's topic is: Resolved; Should the U.S. Form a Common Market for the Western Hemisphere. Debaters must do a lot of reading as well as attend practices and meets. SPEECH TEAM. ROW li J. Greve. Henry's organization is divided into three chapters; Cadet for seventh and eighth graders, Debonaire for ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders, and Coed for seniors. This is the First year Henry's seventh grade has had an FHA chapter. They participate in many of the same ac- tivities as the older groups. Homecoming found them selling leis in the halls, and Thanksgiving found them preparing food baskets for needy families. Debonaire and Coed chapters sent delegates to the state convention, gave a Christmos tea, sold novelty items at Homecoming, and participated in field trips.
