The year also culminated in a great deal of attention on the part of public and press on the problems of American schools and their students. This Book isn't a panacea of educational problems, but rather the picture story of how one school worked, studied, and played— it is the story of Henry High in 1958. The contest, which was played at Porter Field, was hard fought and was an even duel until fullback Jerry Vice broke into the end zone from the one yard line with only four minutes remaining in the game. Southwest, in an attempt to get back into the game, took to the air, but End Gene Lhotka picked off a screen pass and returned it to the Southwest nine yard line. John Kallestad scored on the next play to clinch the victory for the Pats. Henry ... 20 Edison 6 Edison was Henry's second victim and the Pats made tough work of a 20 to 6 victory over the Tommies. Edison scored after a few minutes were lapsed in the game. Henry countered with two touch-downs scored by Jerry Vice and one by John Kallestad as he ran an intercepted pass back 91 yards behind some good blocking by end Don Andrle. Vice's touchdowns came on short plunges and his line smashes throughout the game were Henry's main weapon. Henry.......... 20 West .... 6 Henry convicted the Cowboys of West 20 to 6 in the Homecoming game. Leading 6 to 0 at halftime on John Kallestad's 55 yard touchdown run, as a result of a West fumble. Henry came right back in the second half and with good blocking, was able to get Kallestad off on an 87 yard scoring burst to boost the Patriot margin to 13 to 0. The Cowboys threatened to score throughout the game and dominated play for most of the game, gaining 14 first downs to Henry's 3. With West on the Pat's 27 yard line and in a fine position to score, linebacker Warren Carlson picked off a short flat pass and rambled 73 yards down the side line unmolested. I! 3 0 Henry. 19 Marshall Henry beat Marshall 19 to 0 for its fourth straight victory. The Pats were aided by I I Marshall fumbies, nine of which were recovered by the Patriots. John Kallestad scored two of Henry's touchdowns, one on a 70 yard off-tackle sprint and the other on a pass from fullback Jerry Vice. Vice scored the other touchdown on a short plunge in the second period. Ed Reinert, Pat Himmler, and Jerry Stacy played outstanding defensive football. Their hard tackles were the cause of many of the Marshall fumbles. Henry . . 7 Washburn . . 14 Henry played its best game of the year when the team met Washburn at the Parade Stadium, but nevertheless came out on the short end of a 14 to 7 score. Mel Jacobsen scored Henry's touchdown when he picked up a loose ball after one of his mates blocked a Washburn punt. The Pats failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the third quarter, each time by fumbles recovered by Washburn gridders. The Henry defensive line led by W. Carlson. V. Clipper, J. Stacy, and M. Jacobsen played brilliantly throughout the whole game. Henry 12 Roosevelt 26 Henry went into its game with Roosevelt owning a 4 and I record and a share of second place in the City standings with the Teddies and Washburn. The Teds used both passing and running plays, mixed well, to defeat the Pais 26 to 12 on a muddy field at the Parade Stadium. John Kallestad scored both of Henry's touchdowns and was the only bright spot in the Henry attack all evening. The touchdowns were his seventh and eighth of the year. Hampered by a flu epidemic and bad weather, the Patriots were unable to hold a practice session for a week prior to the game. C id 13 Henry 0 Central Central dropped Henry Into fifth place when the Pioneers defeated the Pats 13 to 0 in the final game of the year, which was played at Porter Field. Henry had a hard time moving the ball against the inspired Central team which had won only one game previous to this. Quarterback Joe Jennings and fullback Jerry Vice were the only effective weapons that Henry could throw against Central, but it wasn't enough. Prospects for next year look good with Coach Cleve using six sophomores—K. Krez, B. Gerdts, M. Shobin. R. Lucht. J. young, and R. Kormanik—in the Central game. Offensive Eleven Row I: W. Carlton. J. Jacobsen won his honors by being a standout on defense in Henry s first game of the year with Southwest. Clipper earned the award for his play in Henry's 14 to 7 loss to Washburn. Sophomore Grid Warriors Win 3, Lose 1 The 1957 edition of the sophomore football team under the direction of coaches F. Valley and J. The Patriots wound up in a tie with Southwest for second place in the city standing. The team went on to emerge victorious in the city play-offs, only to lose to St. Paul Harding in the Region I finals. Coach Harold Younghans has again guided the Henry pucksters through another successful season. They Promote Our Student Welfare The years of your high school life have been filled with profitable activities. These activities will be of little value unless you profit by the experiences they afford and use them to your future betterment. Your greatest joys are the joys of accomplishment, and the incentive to continued success is found in them. It is my hope that each of you will enjoy a life filled with success and happiness and the friendships made at Henry shall be treasured. Principal A. B. Schultz It would be well for each one of us to view the school year in retrospect to attempt an evaluation of our scholastic achievements and our total contribution to the life of the school. The entire curricular and co-curricular program at Henry provides an opportunity for every student to develop his mind and body to the fullest capacity. Our hope is that the experiences gained will inspire each of us to greater achievements in the years to come. As B. C. Forbes says, It may be all right to be content with what you have: but never be content with what you are. Assistant Principal R. DeLapp C542 Those Who Serve Us It would be difficult to face the future without the understanding and advice given to us by our three counselors. Starting off this gala annual event was the homecoming program which includes a series of colorful talent acts. Then all eyes focused on our lovely Queen. Kathy Pawloski. and her attendants as the lights were dimmed, the Grand March played, and the Coronation Ceremony was underway. When school dismissed, we all rushed over to Porter Field to watch our high-spirited football team Convict the Cow-boys' 20-6. In the evening a dance was held. It made a perfect climax for a truly memorable homecoming. This dance is one which all Henry grads try their best to attend. We've had many troubles meeting deadlines, dreaming up copy that's original, shortage of space, cutting and pasting pictures. At times the staff could be found working as late as 5:30 or 6:30 to meet the all-important deadlines. We give thanks to Mr. Amundson, our advisor, for his much appreciated help and patience. His sense of humor and pleasant personality inspire the entire staff to do their best. Advisor. Mr. Amundson, talks over matters of importance with Editor-in-Chief Lynne Olson. L. Olion. K. A sometimes thankless job was done by the twenty members of the Patriot staff. You could usually tell who these members were by the harassed look on their faces on deadline day. The Patriot came out about once every three weeks. The editor's biggest problem was getting all the copy handed in and corrected before it was to be sent into the press. Then back came the proofs and they had to correct all the new mistake either overlooked by the editors or made by the printer. The reporter's biggest problem was waiting for the editors to finish their layouts so that they would know how many words their story was to be. News tips either came all at once or none at all. Sometimes, just before the copy was sent in some big story would show up and layouts had to be changed to fit them in. But. all in all, these newswriters gained fun and experience during the year. Their Job is Reporting the News A lot of hard work goes into putting out a paper, but under the able direction of the staff advisor. Mr. Amundson, the job is fun. Row I: G. Franc. C. Dykosln K. Ulku. Strives to Aid Self, Family, Community The over-all goal of Henry's F.H.A. is to help individuals improve personal, family and community living, now and in the future. The Centennial Review was Henry's big event this year featuring fashions that dated back as far as I860. The Review displayed clothes, furniture, hand-made woven goods, dishes, and silverware. The State Convention was attended by representatives and Harald Pedersen early in March at the Leamington Hotel. Harald. our exchange student from Norway, spoke on the customs of his country. [79] Girls' Sports Offer Year Around Activity Good sportsmanship is the basic understanding in the Girls’ Athletic Association. The Henry High School sports program for girls begins early in the fall with the organized playing of badminton. This program is under the direction of Miss A. Amon. An intramural bowling program got under way later in the season with Miss P. Ziebarth as faculty supervisor. About seventy girls took part in this phase of the program. The G.A.A. program winds up with volleyball, basketball, and tennis. These sports are under the direction of Miss P. Ziebarth. Miss E. Johnston, and Miss A. Amon. Practice makes perfect for Gordin Lindstrom and Lorcnc Oppen as they skillfully bat the birdie back and forth. This year the badminton team took second place m their district by winning three out of four of their games. It's Game Time For The Henry Girls BADMINTON TEAM: Row I: L. Oppen. G. L.nd strom B. Girls earning 500 points are entitled to a big letter. The award for 1.000 points is an allcity emblem. Only a few girls ever achieve this honor. Some of these included the Northside Parade, Kiddy Parade. Raspberry Festival, both Aquatennial parades (in which they received top honors for their class), and the coronation of the Junior Queen and Commodore. These are in addition to the traditional colorful activities of the band, such as presenting half-time shows for football and basketball games, and playing for pep fests. After their annual spring concert on the 24th of April the band helped start the Centennial celebrations with their part in the Northside Centennial Kickoff and the Minnesota Statehood Centennial Parade. Mr. Lundell's geometry class is shown studying diligently beneath the figures they made as a project for the course. Harald Pedersen, our foreign exchange student from Norway, is greeted by Paul Lysne who was our exchange student to Greece last summer. The four people who did so much for the senior class this year are pictured going over some plans. They are: Tom Montgomery, Mr. Schultz. Miss Kienholz, and Charlotte Yost. These Moments We Will Always Remember Queen Kathy Pawloski was radiant on her bis day — Homecoming — the day she was crowned Queen. The senior class election was a big highlight of the year, in spite of the flu epidemic. Balloons, signs, tags and hats gaily adorned the halls and the senior class. The officers elected are pictured on page 3. They are: Sylvan Rue. treasurer; Tom Montgomery, president: Tom Schell, vice-president; Lyle Holin, mascot; Charlotte Yost. secretary; and Ed Reinert, sergeant-at-arms. One can tell by the look on Tom Keegel's face that he is about to receive his first polio shot. C Successful concerts given by the choir were only accomplished by hard work and long hours of practice. Remember the long walks to school through the snow during the winter months? In all our sports activities throughout the year our cheerleaders helped lead the team to victory. What shall I write? Have you signed my picture yet? These comments were made many times during the year. Busy signing pictures are Gary Temple. Barb Bowman. Gene Hart and Judy Nowak. C90 3 Magic Moments Dan Lobash (left) and Bob Lund display their math projects on fourth dimension and other geometric figures completed as voluntary extra credit projects. The students have responded with much enthusiasm and have completed many projects. One project won a blue ribbon at the annual science fair. Susie Behm is measured for her cap and gown under the watchful eye of Don Felknor and several senior girls. The ethics committee encourages students to dress in a suitable manner for school. Members are: V. Mid-dlemist, B. McLaughlin. K. Eggen. and J. Kramer. Sadie Hawkins Day revealed a very handsome couple, Louise Brown and Bob Kline—or is it Bob Kline and Louise Brown? C9I] Remember When ... ? A convicted cowboy' adorned the ceiling of the auditorium on Homecoming. John Roehl had a carefree time at the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance, as one can see by the picture above right. A tense moment in the football game is revealed in the faces of the members of the Patrick Henry Band. Do you recognize Patrick Henry and Porter Field from the air? C92J Convict the Cowboys was the slogan for the Homecoming festivities and convict them we did—20 to 6. Dancing to the latest hit records is a privilege enjoyed by Henry students during their lunch hour. The band is shown performing a favorite routine during half-time. Lovely Karen McCourtie is viewed by her classmates as she walks down the aisle after the Homecoming program. Dave Jones and Sue Tess-man await their turn to get hitched up by Marryin Sam John Kramer at the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. [93] The Roving Camera Metal class can be really engrossing. Mitchell Hillman thinks the new metal lathes in Mr. Parks’ room are just about the finest pieces of equipment in any school. We re with you, Mitch! Pancakes are a treat anytime but when you have home economics first period and Miss Bekkerus on hand to show you all the tricks—well! hmmmmmm! We re mighty proud of our up to the minute efficient reading laboratory. Students clockwise around the table, starting in the foreground are Walter Johnson. Robert Guzek. and Russell Mozey. CM] At Patrick Henry , The boys' sym class really appreciate the coming of spring, as it means a chance to get outside in Minnesota's wonderful weather. Looks like a slide into second for these boys playing softball. Is there a Rembrandt in the house? From the amount of deep concentration in Miss M. Erickson's art class, we'll guess that it takes hard work. We have half the battle wop.. From left to right are Pat Muncy. Nicky Lambsie. Sandra DeWitt, Robert. Define, and Cheryl Martin. Under the expert direction of Miss V. Sanford these junior high school girls brush up on good reading habits. Starting from the left is Sandra Barport. Miss Sanford. Betty Dunfee, and Pamela Tessman. C95 □ Chuck Stanley is shown using the jig saw in Mr. Wobig's woodworking class. Just a word of caution—watch those fingers. Chuck! If you ever have thin material on the track team, just call on our photographer John Cross to stretch them out. Pictured from the left we have those double trouble threats: Bob Wilson, Bob Wilson, John Kallestad, John Kallestad, Bob Kline and Bob Kline. Operating on the principle that what goes up must come down'' has vaulted Warny Carlson into the headlines several times with a record jump of twelve feet and unofficial jumps of twelve feet six inches. Tom Montgomery picked a crucial time to forget his lines at the rehearsal of the senior class play. The cast members don't seem particularly concerned whether he finds his place or not. The Orator staff has worked hard to produce o book that we hope you will enjoy for many years.
