The Orator for 1957 presented by SENIOR CLASS of PATRICK HENRY HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA THE SPIRIT OF HENRY-1957 These pages attempt the Herculean task of recaptures by word and picture that indefinable thins at Henry called spirit.” If we are only partially successful it will be enoush. Where does this spirit show itself? The light happiness of plays and the movins seriousness at Easter: the wonder in junior hish and the pride and joy at commencement; the uninhibited shouts at homecomins and the disnity of Senior Government Day: the heartbreakins hockey loss and the thrilling comeback of the football team; the achievements of the classroom as well as those of the gridiron—all these memories and many more make up the tremendous throbbing spirit at Henry. Homecoming was next and the boys rose to the occasion, combining running with passing for a 42-14 victory and a successful Homecoming. The boys then traveled to Central for a game that was considered a tossup. For the first half the game went according to prediction, but Henry's stamina prevailed and the Pats won. 26-14. Next on the schedule for the rampaging Pats was a game the whole school looked forward to. Playing at home, Henry completely outclassed North High, dishing up the worst defeat in North s history. 53-0. The North Side championship came with this win. Again at home, the now powerful Patriots played host to Vocational and. with the help of tremendous blocking and tackling, defeated them. 30-6. The last game with South High proved to be one of the toughest. At South, the game was a battle of defenses with the Pat line proving to be tougher. The game ended 12-0 and with this the season ended. Coach Cleve had this to say of his squad. They surprised me and themselves. I have never had more fun working with a group of boys. The team paid tribute to Mr. Cleve and his assistants for their wonderful guidance throughout the season. C 26 ] AERIAL ARTISTRY Much of the season’s success was due to the terrific passing attack of Coach Cleve's boys. Though they compiled a season total of 1888 yards running and passing for an average of 269.7 yards per game, the aerial attack consistently kept opponents off balance and on their toes for anything. Completing an amazing total of 25 for 41 between them, halfback Larry Schwartz with 6 for I 7. and fullback Ron Stolski with 19 for 24. were the main gunners' on the squad. An average of better than 50 per cent completions and 466 yards gained with 8 touchdown passes was the final tabulation. Although Coach Cleve’s offense is based mainly on blinding speed and power, it is sometimes overlooked that he always fashions a powerful air attack to go with his fine teams. This year was certainly no exception. C27] Overhead action from the Central win. 26-14. P;. r.f P...I (Above): The rough Henry defense shown downing an opposing back. (Below): R. SOPHOMORES SHINE The undergrads refused to let the upperclassmen show them up and turned in an equally impressive season. These sophomores showed great promise for coming years as they fashioned the highest total points in the city with 188. and produced the stoutest defense allowing only 25 points against them all year. Under the guiding hand of Floyd Valley, the boys fashioned four wins and one tie. The blinding speed of the backs and punishing power of the line proved to be too much for all opponents. Starting with a group of untried seniors, new coach Fritz Engel worked hard and long with his boys, and though the victories didn't number many, he always had a hard fishting squad on the floor. The team showed good hustle at times, but was too erratic at other times in the remaining games. They lost a total of four games by one goal. Inability to score held back a fairly strong defensive team from winning more games. Signs of promise are in evidence for next year and the record should be improved. The team's season record was seven wins, five losses and one tie. Every good gymnast must work constantly to improve his reactions between his mind and his muscles. Once a gymnast has gained complete control of his reactions his performances become unparalleled to any other type of physical manipulation. Mr. Valley is the man responsible for teaching the boys to co-ordinate their minds with their developed muscles. The results of this year s effort were gratifying. Led by Warren Rolek's skill and co-ordination. Henry's B Class made a notable account of itself even though it was hampered by a lack of experienced men. In the Northwest meet Rolek placed third all-around as an individual and the B Class followed his lead and took third place honors. All three classes placed fifth in the extremely competitive Region Meet, and our B Class went to the State Meet and nabbed an enviable fifth place position. J. Wicks (above) and D. PLENTY TO DO FOR ALL Busy backstage are Richard Manro and George Hanson. Cut the lights, kill the foots —these are familar sounds backstage during an auditorium program. A combination of stage artistry plus old-fashioned muscle work, makes our programs run smoothly and efficiently. These tasks are admirably handled by our STAGE CREW. During lunch, the halls are kept in order by the HALL-GUARDS. They see that students stay in the basement so classes in other parts of the building will not be disturbed. These students have one of the most unrewarding tasks in school, but one that is of prime importance. We can also give much credit to the MOVIE CREW, who see to it that we are both educated and entertained with the movies that we see. [60] Hl-C. Row I: W. Peterson. L. Neufield. J. Jor-genton. M. Under the capable direction of Mrs. Boquist. these students attempt to master this difficult language. Another school organization that has grown continually in the last few years is Hl-C. These members meet weekly at a neighborhood church for devotional services and Christian fellowship. With Miss Spute as counselor, these young people plan many school and city-wide activities. In F.H.A., which represents the Future Homemakers of America, the girls learn the fundamentals of the many tasks that a homemaker does day in and day out. F.H.A. helps a girl to become a good citizen and an asset to her community. F.H.A. was a very active organization at Henry this year. Among their many activities included the Chow Mein Dinner, which was one of their moneymaking drives, the making of dolls and favors for the Heart Hospital, and the presentation of a Thanksgiving Basket to a needy family. The State Convention was well-attended this year by five senior high students and four junior high students. At this convention these representatives from each school discussed their problems and made new and better plans for the rest of the year. JUNIOR F.H.A., Row I: D. Thompson, B. Schipper, C. Walsh, J. The plot of the play centers around Dick and Harriet Gresham, two high school youngsters, who are infuriated because their widowed mother has allowed their older brother to become the dictator of the family. They secretly send his picture to a wealthy widow, whose picture has appeared in a matrimonial paper, in the hope that she will marry him and take him far away. This starts the action which creates a riotous comedy and a whirlwind of laughs. Exercising authority Looks like fun ORATOR STAFF. Row I: D Larson, C. M,|ler, J. Gbson, M Renshaw C. Hokans. Row 2: G. Through the combined efforts of the staff, pictures and words relive the year's most memorable events. They worked diligently all year laying out the dummy, taking pictures, and writing copy. PATRIOT staff headquarters, the new room 2I6A, was ordinarily the picture of tranquility. Then, every third week came the deadline days which found page editors calling, get that story in.' and reporters all over the building on last minute interviews. Somehow the editor-in-chief, adviser and staff, working together managed to get the papers out even though the publisher had to wait a couple of minutes more than once as the last copy was collected. The axiom that journalists work best under pressure proved true for the staff. This year THE PATRIOT received the highest award given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association to high school papers—the Medalist rating. Working on another award-winning paper are editors J. In order to raise the spirit of the student body and the team, the pep band aids the cheerleaders by adding a spark of music to these pep-fests. The '56-'57 squad was the largest ever at Henry High School. There were ten cheerleaders, consisting of three sophomores, three juniors, and four seniors. Starting this past year, the squads are being chosen in the spring of the year rather than the fall. This enables any new additions to have the adequate time to prepare for the sports seasons the following school year. We are proud of our cheerleaders and know that without their pep and enthusiasm, our sports program would not be as successful as it is. Row I: J. Smith. J. Goodin. J. Schaitberger. J. Swadling. A close inspection of 208A would reveal half-empty jars of rubber cement, many crumpled sheets of ill-advised copy, and a jumble of photos all overshadowed by the bulletin board which implores the staff to meet those deadlines. Efficiently editing the book were Adrienne Norman and Carol Miller. Their only drawback wa: a case of measles. A most important task was the layout. With geometric precision, Larry Schwartz and Bob Strom-berg put our book together. Handling the welter of activities fell to Margaret Renshaw, Janet Olson and Gary Campbell. Without sports school life is dull. Keeping us informed here were Ron Stolski, who also found time to croon lustily, and Ron Schmidt, our dapper-dan raconteur. The senior activities fell to Mary Ann Leverentz and Georgianna Silsbec, who kept their good humor despite numbed typing fingers and complicated layout problems. Homerooms were carefully identified, typed and re-typed by Carole Ho' ans, Rita Niedenfuer, and Joan Groenveldt. Business debits and credits fell to Audrey Z ack and Darlene Larson. This year’s shutter bug.’ John Gibson persevered to keep everyone happy with his pictures, with an assist from John Cross, the Patriot photog. Suffering through their mistakes and enjoying their inspiration was the adviser Thomas Helf. Zintsmaster Studios did much of our photography. Our engraver was the Bureau of Engraving; our printer, Lund Press, and our cover was done by The S. K. Smith Co.
