Like the old woman in the shoe, Patrick Henry has so many children it doesn’t know what to do! . . . Congested halls . . . Overstuffed lunchrdom . . . Deficient shops . . . Inadequate library . . . Represent major problems; Microscopic stage . . . Lunchroom study halls . . . Lack of student recreation facilities ... An ever increasing enrollment further complicates the situation. growing pains With the theme, Growing Pains, the 1955 Orator Staff will illustrate our predicament. Published by the Seniors of Patrick Henry High School Minneapolis, Minnesota Page 6 Page 14 Page 34 Page 56 Page 83 Upper Left . . . Famished Henryites impatiently wait in long lines for that which will quell their hunger. Lower Left ... Our minute library is used as a study hall to catch the overflow of our already overcrowded lunchroom. Upper Right . . . Let's Dance becomes a battle cry in- stead of a recreation when the noon dances are conducted in our narrow halls. Lower Right . . . Our Jr. High students upon coming to Henry experience their first homeroom in our teachers’ lunchroom . . . These are a few places where the Growing Pains are predominant. Peripatetic teachers . . . Brief cases for desks . . . Different rooms every period . . . No proper place for work or con- ferences ... The patient teachers at Henry High have put up with these things for many a school day. They exemplify our theme Growing Pains because they too are growing, not in size, but in number, causing our halls to ring with the click of their heels as they hopefully look for an empty room in which to hold class. Prescription for Growing Pains An extreme need ... A long awaited dream ... A crackajack plan .. . Carefully calculated blueprints. A bright future is looked upon by Mr. Shultz and Mr. Davis shown here looking over the plans which seem to be the answer to Henry’s problem of expansion. Twenty-eight years ago, civic leaders in the northernmost section of the city recognized the need for a junior high school to serve this area. Since that time, the school requirements of the area have multiplied and the foresight and determination of its people have kept pace. Three additions— in 1928, 1929, and 1939—completed the building which we now know as Patrick Henry Junior-Senior High School. Today, in the same shadowy provinces of dreams and visions, the people of the community and the staff of the school have poured their skill and effort. From this effort have come plans for the new Patrick Henry—a complete senior high school with added facilities for our ever-growing high school enrollment. The New Addition will be completed by the fall of 1956, and by I960, twenty-two hundred students will be enrolled in our school. It is for those hundreds, and the thousands who will follow them, that we—the parents, the architects, the workmen, the teachers — have dreamed and worked. This has been labor for a vital commodity. This co-operative enterprise, that began as a dream, will soon pay dividends in the lives of Henry students and their community. Student programs . . . Bulletins to be typed . . . Nurse. I’m sick! . . . Helping new students adjust to school routine . . . Ringing passing bells . . . Advising upperclassmen as to the future . . . Guardians to 1600 children . . . These are the duties of our nurse, office staff, and counselors. Their learned minds are trained to help the students of Henry to meet many new problems which arise during the course of the day and need the advice of our experienced administration. Students with a sense of responsibility . . . The welfare of the school at heart . . . Arranging service points . . . Taking trips . . . Promoting dances, auditoriums, and homecomings. These are a few of the many activities in which Henry's Sr. Council partakes. An organization would not run smoothly without competent leaders. Shown below are four excellent officers: Benjie Kuehnel, President; Don Laven. Treasurer; Diane Carciofini, Secretary; and Gar Brown, Vice President. Our Jr. High Council is not to be forgotten. Through their organization they learn to be future leaders of their school and to accept the responsibilities which will be theirs when they enter Sr. High. They too have student leaders to guide them; these Jr. officers: Denny Palm. President; Barbara Sletten, Vice President; Barbara Mitchell, Treasurer; and Jerry Rice, Secretary, gain valuable experience as they carry out the duties of their offices. [123 The Student Council supports school activities by selling tags and donating the profits for the purchase of needed equipment. Here Janice peterson demonstrates her sales ability as she makes a sale'' to Gary Hamack and Charles Droege. The spirit of the gala event, Homecoming, was felt as the art classes decked the halls with attractive posters as the one shown above. An experiment with media other than paint and paper produced a variety of proclamations commanding our team to Brand the Cowboys!' Antidote for Drudgery A happy change of pace in the busy year of the Student Council is found in the annual statewide convention. Seen leaving for Albert Lea are Eva Petrides, Diane Carciofini, Gar Brown, Benjie Kuehnel, and Mari Olson. The United Nations program gives us a better insight into the functions of this organization. This year's program included a representative of Japan, a Minnesota World Affairs Center worker, Gar Brown, and Eva Petrides. C133 Carrying books . . . Belonging to organizations . . . Attending classes in the Jr. High wing . . . Homework . . . Meeting representatives of colleges .. . Fitting caps and gowns . . . Looking to the future . . . The routine of a senior. The Seniors have had to tolerate the lack of sufficient room to carry out their studies and activities. Here three of our seniors, George Barkosky, Jerry Richter, and Marlys Ostlund, inspect the plans for Henry's new addition, wishing it would have materialized for their benefit.
