P. Anderson 3 WlVw A] 4U SEPTEMBER 7,1849 (pr . Forty-Niners Reprinted from the diary of a '49er. MHC TfttbisL Uaa Gold! People are milling about in the streets shouting, “Gold! They’ve found it in California.” They say there’s plenty for everybody—the ground is covered with it. My fortune is made, and the world lies at my feet! (Ed. note) Our school is a gold mine wherein we seek knowledge more precious than gold. With the knowledge offered us we can gain success. SEPTEMBER Hi, 1849 My neighbors and I have organized a wagon train, and now all that we need is a guide to lead us across the mountain. (Ed. note) We. too, need guides to attain our goals. Teachers provide this invaluable leadership. SEPTEMBER 23, 1849 Our life with the wagon train is proving to be interesting and exciting. Apparently, jx ople with the same aims can learn to lx helpful and cooperative. (Ed. note) School clubs provide the means whereby students with similar interests have the opportunity to work together toward a common goal. JANUARY 19, 1849 I arrived yesterday, immediately staked my claim, and am now enthusiastically engaged in working my placer. I’ve had some success, and I’m certain that with diligent efforts I will soon strike a bonanza. (Ed. note) Gaining knowledge may be compared to mining and the students to miners. Just as our forty-niners had to keep digging for gold, so we must continue our quest for knowledge. FEBRUARY (i, 1849 We were up before dawn today, anxious to be on our way to town early enough to enter the wres-tling and jumping contests and watch the horseracing. I made a good start by winning the wrestling contest. I was beaten in the jumping contest, but the fun I had made it well worth the effort. (Ed. note) The miners knew the pleasure to be gained through friendly competition in sports just as we know the thrill of matching our skill against that of other schools. APRIL 14, 1849 After a hard day’s work in the mines, I appreciate the relaxation of an evening by the warmth of the campfire, playing my guitar and singing with my friends. These evenings about the campfire I treasure as the most enjoyable of my life. (Ed. note) In school life, there are times for work and times for relaxation. Homecoming, the Prom, and Graduation are occasions for relaxation and enjoyment. They will live in the student's memory, to be cherished by him in later life. JUNE 5,1849 Gold! I’ve struck a boiTM - 'anr ijdj Vo ipy setmirtgly ieddless work and struggle. Soon I'll lx leaving with my fortune in Search of a new life, but f shall always carry this diary with me as a remembrance of my treasured year in the California gold fields. (Ed. note) Graduation, like the bonanza of the ’49er, signifies the close of a |x riod of learning and the beginning of a new life making use of the fortune acquired during our years in school. The Orator is the diary of the Henry ’40ers, their, remembrance of treasured years at Patrick Henry. (- t( • (Ev-6 n • $ 4 In Neriietttion... The '49ers had their guide to success just as we have ours. Mr. A. P. Anderson has contributed his time and efforts to the success of this Orator. We have no gold dust with which to repay him, but we dedicate this '49 Orator to him as proof that his eight years as guide to the annual staff have not been unappreciated. 5 An Old Settler Meets i New Forty-Niner 6 ► A new era began when Mr. Porter said good-by, and Mr. Schultz mounted the steps to the mine. Today the '49ers have memories of happy years spent with Mr. Porter, and they look forward to future successful years with Mr. Schultz. The Henry '49ers pass through this entrance each day as they continue their search for the knowledge which will be so precious in later life. 7 Fntrniue to the Mine CONTENTS FACULTY..................................Guides to the West STUDENTS............................Miners and Prospectors CLUBS.................................The Wagon Train SPORTS................................Games of Chance FEATURES..............................Camp Fire Gatherings 8 Mr. A. Through club projects they sent money to foreign countries for needy boys. Other activities include selling Christmas trees and collecting for the Community Chest. 46 w $®fl .. VV eSTt W6M ! iiWr.a{fewrf: m L This year's edition of the Patriots wound up the football season with a noteworthy record. The city title was decided in the last game of the year against Edison. On bad breaks Henry lost to the undefeated Tommies from Edison 19-0. The season as a whole reflects the pluck and determination for which all Henry teams are noted. After being upset by Marshall 13-0 in their second game of the season, the Pats rebounded to gain a string of five straight victories before going down in defeat to Edison. Memorable victories this season were the upset of a heavier team from South, the defeat of our arch-rival North for the mythical northside championship, and the 19-7 licking given to Vocational to sweeten Homecoming Day. At the end of the season Henry had earned a record of 6 wins and 2 defeats for third place in the league standings. This year's group of speedy B squad players will help Henry immeasurably in the next two years. Pluck and determination coupled with speed brought about this very successful season. After losing 26-12 to Central, the sophomore football machine started rolling. Southwest, South, North, and Edison were successively defeated. The victories over North and Edison were especially pleasing. The win over North resulted in complete football dominance of Henry over North this year. Edison's 7-6 defeat gave Henry claim to second place in the city sophomore league. The sophomore league record was four victories and one defeat. Cross Country The thrill of watching a race over varied terrain was found by many this fall. A team of veterans and promising newcomers accounted for the new spectator interest. The team's potential strength was shown in early meets. The harriers took a first and second in three-way meets and won one out of three dual meets. One of these losses was to Southwest, the city and state champs. Ruud took four firsts and one second to spark the Henry runners. With Rolek leading the way, Henry took eighth place in the city meet. The state meet found the team in better condition to account for the tenth place finish. This wound up one of the most successful seasons Henry has ever had in cross-country competition. Nelson, Cyrot-ski, Johnston, Bittner, Neale, Ruud, Homuth, Coach Evenson. Hockey Henry's veteran team started the season with a spectacular burst of scoring to swamp Southwest 6-1. The continuation of this scoring prowess is seen in the shut-out of Marshall 7-0. The victory string was enlarged upon with hard fought victories over Edison and Vocational. Our pucksters came out second best for the first time in what proved to be the title tilt with South. They rebounded for a win against North to finish the league season in second place. In the district playoffs the Pats lost to Central and South to wind up the season. Sparking the team were All-City Leo Goslin's playmaking and Thompson's brilliant goal-tending. Swimming The mermen gained three victories out of ten attempts in the tough city league competition. This record is excellent in view of the fact that only one senior was on the team. Henry's victories were garnered at the expense of Vocational, Edison, and South. A 46-20 licking was given to De La Salle, the only non-league competition this year. This swimming team will always be remembered for constantly giving their opponents the edge in experience, yet still putting up a tough battle until the last race was over. With determination like this we predict a much better record in competition next year. HOCKEY Row 1—Iverson, Krutzig, Backstrom, Thompson, Skoglund, Puffer, Hays, Motzka. Row 2—Coach Dahlin, Du-maas. Row 2—Burns, Knoll, Westling, Anderson, Levens, Holmquist, Coach Dammann. Basketball The Pats went through the season with a predominantly junior team. The seniors on the team couldn't offset the lack of experience. Still opponents had to fight to the last minute to be sure of victory. Many close games resulted from this fighting spirit, but that extra basket or two needed for victory couldn't be found. This was especially noticeable in the Edison game which Henry lost by one point in an overtime. Graduating this year are Captain Marvin Schenk, Arlan Ashbaugh, Doug Levens, Jerry Hallman, and Jerry Brown. Wrestling If anybody bothered to trace the grunting and groaning heard throughout Henry halls, he would find himself in the little gym. This tracer of lost sounds would be viewing the Henry wrestling team. These wrestlers won ten matches and lost two to Marshall, the city champs. This group of grunters and groaners really covered themselves with glory in winning the regional wrestling trophy. Jordal, Israelson, Modeen, and Slepica were main cogs in gaining this honor. The first place trophy is the first Henry has won in regional competition. Henry's trip to the state meet produced two fourth place finishes. Apparatus The hardest working athletes for the least recognition is a title that would certainly go to the apparatus team. These boys work faithfully every night after school, yet very few know about the team. These hard working boys prepared for the state meet with practice meets against Edison and North. Even in losing these meets, the team gained valuable experience for the state meet. The use of this experience con be seen in Henry's fourth place finish in Class C competition. Earl Homuth took second place in High All Around. In the Northwest Gymnastic meet, Dick Ernst took first place on the parallel bars to lead the team to a fourth-place finish. This year's team, led by Doug Anderson, Dick Pendcimas, and Howard Skelly on the mound, has high hopes of bringing home the bacon. The boys look good, both at bat and on the field. Each season many different sports are organized to give every girl a chance to compete in the sport of her liking. The thrills of badminton are found by these girls.
