A. P. Anderson RELAXING REFLECTING REMINISCING On a sunny autumn day students of Henry gather on the lawn for a bit of friendly conversation during leisure hours. Around the locker, which is the favorite meeting-place of gals and guys, anything is likely to happen. Here Dorothy Nordwall is frustrated by Don Larson in her attempts to close her locker. COMPOSING National Education Week: The thrill of actually broadcasting is experienced by Helen Tometz and Marge Wilkins as their part of a radio script. Shades of Homecoming: Snapshots bring back fond memories of that most perfect of fall days. The Patriot is Out: Ernie Kuzick, Daisy Hattstrom, and Ellen Robertson eagerly scan the new Patriot to see the goings-on about school. COMMENTING ► CONTEMPLATING Football Poster: One way of showing enthusiasm for football is demonstrated by Cliff Ash in his posters of the football team. Choir Concert: Robes must be carefully checked in and out whenever the choir appears in any program. National Book Week: Knowing how to look up information in the library is an important attribute that all students should try to acquire. FACULTY P«ge 10 A touch of sophistication, wisdom through experience, an air of dignity—the distinguishing characteristics of our faculty members. Patience and understanding, as well as a real interest in the progress of the school, bring about a closer relationship between teachers and the students. STUDENTS.................................Page 16 The atmosphere of the classroom, modes of youthful fashion, the first glimpses of romance—these are the trademarks of a happy-go-lucky youth. Though the part that education plays in the future must not be forgotten, it is these diversions of school life that have made the high school an outstanding American institution. CONTENTS CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS Page 38 The smartness of a band uniform, the formality of a choir robe, the casual air of a Hi-Y jacket—these are symbolic of the many extra-curricular activities offered students. Besides giving opportunities for service to the school, these activities also develop well-rounded personalities, and seek to raise the prestige of the school through interscholastic competition. SPORTS................................ Page 56 The thrill of victory, the pride of a letter sweater, the letdown with defeat—these are the varied emotions experienced by the boys in scarlet and grey. Win or lose, the spirit of Patrick Henry remains intact throughout any competitive sport. In the busy humdrum atmosphere of office routine. Lorraine Lofstad, Mary Pappas, Berneita Hoyme, and Alico Rudberg take care of all clerical and office work of the school. I VISITING TEACHER NURSE Is it possible that one oi Henry's students could be skipping? A quick check by telephone will reveal the truth to Mrs. Zeglen, visiting teacher at Henry. Between telephone conversations, she pauses a moment to chat with Mrs. Carlson, Henry's capable nurse who must meet each student returning to school after being ill. LUNCHROOM MANAGER HEAD ENGINEER At lunchtime, the eyes of hungry Henry students fall upon the menu for the day, planned and prepared under the capable management of Mrs. Hatton. When teachers find that a room is too cold for comfort, they send out a call for Mr. Junnemann, chief engineer. Besides regulating the heat of the building, he is in charge of all building facilities. The fantastic cases thought up by the various classes proved to be interesting as well as educational. Studying Jay Hopps' poster on the Comedy of Errors are Joyce Chase, Eldo Schmidt, and Pat Smith. The study of Shakespeare is made more interesting by the use of pictures and posters made by the students, and by the attendance of the University Plays. A few moments of tense concentration prevail as Karl Wickstrom and Ralph Kirchoff demonstrate the commercial process of making nitric acid. Demonstrations and experiments performed by the students help make chemistry and physics more understandable but also more dangerous. The students often get carried away in their enthusiasm for making something new . Should Minneapolis adopt the proposed city charter? is the question being discussed by the members of this panel. Discussions on topics similar to this are held weekly in the civics and history classes. By taking part, the students have the opportunity to express their own ideas. The smartness of a band uniform, the formality of a choir robe, the casual air of a Hi-y jacket—these are symbolic of the many extra-curricular activities offered students. Besides giving opportunities for service to the school, these activities also develop well-rounded personalties, and seek to raise the prestige of the school through interscholastic competition. PAT-POLAR—Would you like to spend a Saturday night dancing and getting acquainted with Northside students? A ticket from a Pat-Polar committee member at Henry will enable you to spend every other Saturday night at Plymouth Lodge having a good time. These dances are sponsored by the Y.M.C.A. for students of Henry, North, and Robbinsdale. STAGE CREW—The Homecoming auditorium, Thanksgiving program, and class plays could never be a success without the help of the stage crew. Dashing out on stage to remove properties, dimming the lights, and closing the curtain are just routine jobs to these boys who receive little recognition for their work. GIRLS ACTIVITY COMMITTEE—How could any girl want to miss a style show complete with the latest fashions of the Modern Miss! Such a program is planned each year by the Girls Activity Committee to help high school girls become more clothes conscious. Other girls' activities during the year are planned by this group of girls under the guidance of Miss Hultcrantz. OFFICE STUDENT HELPERS—Helping trim the office Christmas tree is just one of the odd jobs taken care of by Henry students who use their vacant periods assisting the office staff. Running errands, typing and telephoning are a few of the jobs given to these students. HI-HAVEN—Friday night is Hi-Haven night at the Y.W-C.A. and everyone can be sure of having a good time dancing and mingling with members from all the city high schools. Each school must take its turn acting as host to the other schools. Some of the events held during the year were a hay-ride for the members and their guys, a recognition dinner, and the sale of Christmas cards. LATIN The collection and mailing of clothes to needy families in Europe proved to be one of the favorite activities of the Latin Club. As a result of this, many interesting letters of appreciation were received. The club also took part in a Christmas program sponsored by the language groups. Anderson. CHOIR Highlighting the choir's activities of the year was a concert given at St. Cloud Tech. Other activities included the sponsoring of several paper and popcorn-ball sales and the presentation of the annual Christmas and spring concerts. In addition to this the choir accepted invitations to appear in various churches and on the radio. All this has been done under the leadership of the director, A. M. Nervig, and the choir officers: George Swanson, Arlan Ashbough, Violet Lorentzen, Alda Knobel, and Jean Pearson. A regular occurence during a choir rehearsal is the jam session around the piano. This year’s activities included trips to Willmar, Minnesota, and Fargo, N. D., in addition to participation in the Minneapolis Aquatennial, the St. Paul Winter Ice Carnival, and various school events. Everyone comments on Henry's beautiful band uniforms, but few realize what a task it is to get the right uniforms to the right students. Dutchie Neuman, uniform custodian, with the help of Dorisanne Elliot, tries to satisfy the needs of several band members. By the looks on their faces, she seems to be doing all right. Row 5 . . . This familiar shout comes from the cheerleaders as they prepare to back up the team with a school yell. The five members of the cheerleading squad are trained by Mr. Hoerschgen and are always ready to lead the students in cheering at intorscholastic athletic meets. • GIRLS CHORAL CLUB Girls belonging to this choral group are getting-in-training for choir activities. Although earlier in the season Henry defeated a surprisingly strong Vocational club 14 to 0. the gala homecoming celebration was marred by a 19 to 7 defeat at the hands of Edison. Comer. 59 BASKET Considering the fact that the team was made up largely of Juniors and Sophomores, lacking the experience of game competition, they did remarkably well. Even though this year's record was below par at the outset of the season, it was realized by all that the team was gaining experience. With the first five games behind them the team gained its one objective when it downed West 49-46. Ending the 47-48 season. Henry dropped its last two games to Vocational and Washburn, both rated high in the city conference. Upholding the seniors this year were Tack Kermeen and Dick Elding. Other players who rallied under fire were Marvin Schienk, Jerry Hallman, and Tom Burns. HOCKEY The outstanding winter sport this year was Hockey. The team finished fifth in the city league. After losing its opener to last year's champions, West, Henry rose to its potential height by drubbing South 7 to 2. Following this victory was a shutout win over Vocational. Due to bad breaks suffered by Henry, they dropped a close one to their northside rivals, the Polars, I to 0. Outstanding players on the team this year were Jim Caughlin, who made the all-city 2nd team. Captain Leo Goslin, Curt Steine, Claude Adamski, and John Comer, to name only a few. Left . . . This is the familiar cry of Coach Floyd Valley, heard through the many practice sessions of Henry's swimming team. Starting off the season with a bang, Henry outsplashed Vocational. The Pats continued through the season, dumping South and Central for a total of 3 wins in 10 tries. By breaking former Henry records in the backstroke, 220, breaststroke, 40, medely, and relay, this year's tankmen showed that its .300 average was due to keen competition throughout the league. The only graduating senior on the team is Jim Jordal, star backstroker. BASEBALL With a large percentage of returning veterans, Henry plans to become a thorn to the city's title seekers.
