Vicky Shelton, starting forward on the Girls Varsity Basketball Team did more than her share of work during girl's basketball season. Using both speed and skill she helped to boost her team from being no. 3 in the league to number one. She can be up making a jump-shot one minute and down fighting for the ball the next, said junior guard Faith Leasau. She's great to watch. N5he's great to wa tch. Since the beginning of the season Vicky left each game being high scorer. Her contributing points helped her team in the C.l.F. Play offs. After they won the C.l.F. champion- ship they went on to Long Beach to represent San Diego in the Regional Playoffs. 'fShe's a great player and l guess that's what makes a champ, said teammate Carol Hobbs. During the Regional Palyoffs Vicky's talent helped her team beat Fresno's best which was Reedley High. With her speed and talent the team had a suc- cessful season. Varsity Basketball 95

Th Old Maid Why would anyone on a Friday even- ing to to the Madison Warhawks gym? To watch the battle between the num- ber one girls basketball team, the Madi- son Warhawks, and the number three team, the Patriots. As the ball was thrown up into the air, starting center Brooke Davis tapped the ball to guard Sheri Ed- monds, who took the ball down court for a quick two points. As soon as the Patriots turned around to play defense the Warhawks were right behind them, The Warhawks passed the ball around trying to confuse the Patriots, but with no luck. Finally there was an opening and the Warhawks went on to score. As the sound of the bell rang the Patriots huddled together for the fam- ous cheer. Win! was shouted by the Patriots as they ran back out on the court. And win they did. As the second quarter ticked away the Patriots piled on the points. The Patriots kept their lead up Finding an opening in the Mira Mesa Maur- aders defense, Carol Hobbs drives in for two points. As the Mauraders rebound the ball, Yvett Knox becomes aggressive and gets a jump ball, 94 Athletics until the end. The Patriots took the number one title in the Eastern league. Though some might have thought that being number one had its advan- tages, the things that bothered some team members were its disadvantages: consider having to spend numerous Fri- day nights in a sweaty gym instead of out on the town. Also a lot of their Sat- urday mornings were spent indoors on a court instead of in bed. Being number one was a lot of work for the female Patriots but to them it was worth it. P.H. D.C.'s David David Harden tells the coach what hap- pened on the last play. Which one of our basketball players used to live 3000 miles away and was told to go here by a waiter? lt's David Harden who used to live in Washington D.C. All he ever does is talk about DC. said his fellow teammates. That will explain how he got his nickname, DC, When moving from Washing- ton, David asked the waiter, which High School had a good team. The waiter told David that Henry had won C.lrF. last year and had a very strong team. Since David was already coming to Patrick Henry, he got very excited over the prospect of a championship basketball team. Right then, and there, David decided that he would go out and make that team. David had been playing basketball since the third grade. He and his older brother had been playing and practic- ing on Sundays for as long as he could remember. Obviously this helped him immensely, for not only did he make our champion team , but he became a star. David was a team leader as well as being optimistic in all his doings. 96 Athletics Hand on th f'Morse take the championship? No way, they're too finicky! This was what the crew of Junior Varsity Basket- ball players thought about their top ri- val, Morse. Morse, ranked number 1, and Henry number 2, Coach Baranski felt his team had their work cut out for them, to take the championship, Bar- anski thought his team definitely had what it took to be championship cali- ber. They're quick, skilled and try ll I7 our team, everybody hustles. hard to achieve the bestf' Baranski ex- plained. After all, the ultimate goal for a Junior Varsity ball player is to win the Ball championship. On our team, everybody hustles, Eric Karros, a starting forward said. HThere isn't any jealousy among the team . . . everybody hustles and con- tributes what they can for the success of the team as a whole, said Steve Lipe, This strong feeling of success, took the Junior Varsity team to a first place victory in the first game at Mount Miguel High School.
