Th Old Maid Why would anyone on a Friday even- ing to to the Madison Warhawks gym? To watch the battle between the num- ber one girls basketball team, the Madi- son Warhawks, and the number three team, the Patriots. As the ball was thrown up into the air, starting center Brooke Davis tapped the ball to guard Sheri Ed- monds, who took the ball down court for a quick two points. As soon as the Patriots turned around to play defense the Warhawks were right behind them, The Warhawks passed the ball around trying to confuse the Patriots, but with no luck. Finally there was an opening and the Warhawks went on to score. As the sound of the bell rang the Patriots huddled together for the fam- ous cheer. Win! was shouted by the Patriots as they ran back out on the court. And win they did. As the second quarter ticked away the Patriots piled on the points. The Patriots kept their lead up Finding an opening in the Mira Mesa Maur- aders defense, Carol Hobbs drives in for two points. As the Mauraders rebound the ball, Yvett Knox becomes aggressive and gets a jump ball, 94 Athletics until the end. The Patriots took the number one title in the Eastern league. Though some might have thought that being number one had its advan- tages, the things that bothered some team members were its disadvantages: consider having to spend numerous Fri- day nights in a sweaty gym instead of out on the town. Also a lot of their Sat- urday mornings were spent indoors on a court instead of in bed. Being number one was a lot of work for the female Patriots but to them it was worth it. P.H.
