Smith. Startin It From Scratch . .. I was really disappointed to hear that J.V. Soccer was going to be cancelled this year , confessed Coach Joe Kovacevich. The school dis- trict - once again - did not have the money for the Junior Varsity team. The team was supported by a pri- vate grant from La Jolla. Included in the contract was the agreement that the team do some community service work. I would rather the team be sup- ported by the school, but this is better than nothing. Besides, it helps the com- munity, said the coach. Without the money, the team would not have been able to improve the field . . . which was the major problem. The team got off to a late start, but this didn't seem to stop any of them. Everything, from try-outs to the team's first practice was delayed because of the financial problems. Because of these set backs, the team worked extra hours, not only after school, but on weekends and over the holidays. It paid off, for the team gained immense- ly in sportsmanship and new friend- ships. They were to play the Mira Mesa team. lt will probably be th most difficult game we play all season, said the coach. Coach Kovacevich once again head- ed up the J.-V. Soccer team. I love working out therewith those kids, it makes me feel good about myself. They're my teamg when they succeed, I succeed. When they fail, I fail, said the coach. And they were his team. Coach Kovacevich was seen out on the field daily - drilling, exercising and playing soccer with 4 his boys. Coach Kovacevich said, When ranking soccer with the rest of the sports Fve coached, I place it on a level with football, but for different reasons. Soccer is more simple, the team mem- bers must be in top condition, and the spirit is always high soccer is a great sport! 88 Athletics l ws 53 i Martin Juarez, races to beat Tom Lebhar. Captain Carina Carina Puleo: Captain of Field Hockey and Commissioner of Girl's Athletics, definitely a win' ning combination. This was the last year for Girl's Field Hockey, but it was one of the best years for Carina Puleo. Carina enjoyed physical sports since she was young. She started in gymnas- tics but ended in field hockey. She hopes to play after graduation. 'll would prefer playing in Association la field hockey league,l rather than in col- lege. And if there isn't any field hock- ey, then l'd like to try rugbyf, she said, Last year Carina was chosen for the All-Tournament team that was named at the Serra Tournament. As a sopho- more she was playing goalie, after the season she began playing left-halfback and has played there since. Besides being the captain of the team and Commissioner of Girl's Ath- letics, she was the assistant coach of the team. She was appointed to the position by Coach Dierker who was de- scribed as being Hthe best influence of the past seasons. She personally en- couraged me to do my best, said Car' ina. Michelle Hollander best described Carina, She helps with coaching, plays left-halfback, knows a lot about the game, and helps the team in every other way. She just knows what she's doing. Lastly, Carina had something to say about the team, This year's team has been my favorite -- they're different from past teams because there is team effort rather than self satisfaction. They all helped me to mature as a playa er and a person, I'll miss them after the season. 90 Athletics Determined to stop a goal. Carina Puleo at- tempts to steal the ball away from the opposi- tion while gaolie Faith Leasau, anticipates a shot.
