Consisting mostly of last years J.V. players and two re- turning varsity players, the team got off and running to an excellent start. With a new assistant coach, Fred Horn- beck, who specialized in conditioning the team, the team looked forward to their season. I think we have a good chance to make the championships if we play the outstanding way we have proven we can, said Jeff Almada, centerback. The practices in the mud and rain were fun at first, but the mud fights soon grew old. Then, it was a matter of staying warm while working as hard as the next guy. Sometimes I got fed up with the practices, but it really did pay off, in the long run, said Rusty Ander- son, We've proven we can play with skill as well as determination. It all comes downlto the heart, this will de- termine how much we want the cham- pionshipf' said Coach Liles. The team showed how much they wanted to win by defeating 7 year champ LaJolla in the first game of the season. We also gathered a quick win over last years CIF champs, Universi- ty, said Richard Deeb. Coach Liles was once again an out- standing coach as he led the team to several victories. I enjoy my job, I like teaching soccer, and we just have an all-round good time out there, said Liles. Most players thought that, Coach Liles should receive most of the credit due to his high spirits and so much faith in his players. For years now our tennis courts have gained a renowned reputation for be- ing some of the worst in the county. Well, it's nice to be known for some- thing,' commented Steve Chan. The courts were designed for more effec- tive drainage. The architect didn't con- sider how much a few uneven, sloping valleys would affect an average tennis game. Playing matches away, on de- cent courts, is paradise compared to playing a home match and having to listen to the visiting team's com- plaints, said Moises Orozco. This year was no exception. 'AWe definitely couldn't host Wimbledon, comment- ed Rick Sidley. Coached by Russ Leslie, the team had a very successful season, as shown by their record. Some of the highlight- ing matches were against Coronado, Crawford, and Morse. The top players included Danny Braun, Ron Kroichick, Jack Lieb, and Dale Minney. After all, what do they do that so important? Ralph Scalercio was the strongest assett to our Varsity soccer team. l like being goalie because goal- ie is fun! said Ralph. What an answer to come from, who Coach Liles de- scribed as, the best goalie Henry,s ever seen. ll , oalle is fun. In a game against La Jolla, Ralph led the Patriots to victory by blocking the numerous penalty kicks involved in the shoot out to decide the tie. Grinning through a mud streaked face, Ralph said, l was just doing my job. This was the first time La jolla had been beaten in that tournament in thirteen years. In another game against University where Henry scored their only goal in the first five minutes, Ralph aided the team by blocking eight shots including a penal- ty. In all my experience, that game was an example of where everyone played to their absolute potential, in- cluding Ralph,'l said Coach Liles. So what makes a great goalie? Ralph answered this easily with the old cliche, Practice . . . yeah, practice makes perfect. Varsity Soccer 87
