Brin in ut th es HYeahl We've done itl Let's party! Shouts of exclamation echoed through the gym on Thursday, February 10, 1983. The J.V. Wrestling team once ll t lets me take out my aggresslons. again took the Eastern League chame pionship. This year's squad had more talent and drive than any squad we've had in the past three years,'I said Coach Tony Leone. We deserved to win. I've never worked so hard in my entire life, said Dan Coffer. l'The practices were worse than any home- work I've ever had, said Hector Cas- tillo. 'KI usually have about five or six guys drop out, because I make the practices so tough. But these guys just hung in there! I think it brought out the best in them, said Coach Leon. Because of the strain and stress that wrestling demanded, the team felt re- warded physically. HI like to wrestle because it lets me take out my aggres- sions . . . it's great! exclaimed John Higgins. Fans were an important part of our school athletic program. It didn't matter what the game was, or who the athlete was, they all had one thing in common with all their fellow jocks . . . they all wanted fans to attend their sporting events. This was the first year, that I can re- member, that football didnlt have many fans. I don't know, but maybe that's what hindered our playingf' said Varsity football player, Allen Read. Yelling at the top of her lungs, Ruth Saiz urges the foot- ball team to victory. Ruth Saiz, a senior on the Girls Cross Country team, wanted to attend a football game. Be- cause of her running, making it to one of the games was almost impossible. But, one day, she and some friends, were able to go, UI was glad that we could finally get to a game, she said. But, to her disappointment, nobody seemed tc be cheering. 'lFinally we decided to just get real- ly hyper . . . even if nobody else did, said Ruth. Fans were important, but they needed to b cheering. l'When I'm actually wrestling, I can, hear anything, but when I finish it's great to look around and see all those kids out there cheering you, said Kevin Olin, a sophomore on the Var sity wrestling team. 82 Athletics

Where's The H O First they took away the custodians to clean our rooms, then they took away our towels so we could dry ourselves off after sweating it out in gym, and now, theylve tak- en away our water? Just about. At the start of the school year, the Board of Education knew they had to save more money . . . their source? Waterpolo. The sacrifice directly af- fected the J.V. team - they were cut out completely . The varsity team didn't do too bad, at least they were still able to play. NI guess we can't blame everything on the Board of Education, we lost all of our out- standing players last year, said Rick Gor- den. We just didn't have the athletic strength necessary to win certain games, said Michelle Hollander, team manager. The team did its best, but without the right play- ers the water didnlt always seem to boil just right. Grabbing the ball from his opponent Rick Gorden shows his offensive strengths. The caps are the only place the number can be displayed. A I Coach Owen instructs his team before a game. Many of the games as well as practices were held at Al, lied Gardens pool. Waterpolo 8 1

Torturing his opponent John Higgins takes I him down with a headlockl The J.V. Wrestling Team: Front: S. Correy. J Jasso, P. Kotzback, H. Castillo, K. Rhodes, J. Higgins. M. Stowers. Row 2: P. Samoris, T. Tolrntino. D. Cotter, M, Carrico, C. Hulit. M. Pyle, J. Byerly. Top: J. Kolk. M. Szutenbach, C. Burg. S. Singleton. T. Pye. S. Combs. Coach Mike. the Wins Mike Pyle: Friend and foe. Friend to his fellow teammates, foe to anyone he wrestles against. My favorite move is the double leg, how about you? How often have you asked yourself this question? Mike Pyle did. And he found that by using his double leg maneuver he was able to pile up the wins. Mike always placed well in the tournaments the school went to. Mike's a really good wrestler. But, he also had an advantage on the rest of the guys, because he had wrestled be- fore, said Mike Szutenbach. Mike was on an AAU wrestling team prior to playing for the Patriots. The team practiced everyday for three hours. Mike got into wrestling to help him with staying in condition for foot- ball. He played linebacker and full- back, sometimes he played both. That might explain why his favorite move was the double leg, lt's like a football tackle, you drop your weight and can eigher pick him up, trip him or throw him to either sidef' Mike explained. Sound rough? Mike's opponents sure thought so. j. V. Wrestling 83
