Gill 's in the Wa ter Tim Brecht tries to outmaneuver the opponent passing the ball to Brian Knott, a sophomc Gil Goran prepares to defend the goal. Gil was number one goalie for the varsity team. What is a number one necessity for a Water Polo team? Gil Goren was that necessity, GiI's position as goalie re- quired immense concentration. He felt the pressure when an opponent was about to take a shot from six feet away. When asked why he plays water polo, Gil replied, Because I hate gym, it doesn't offer me the challenge that a sport does, The physical exertion nec- essary to play the position is immense. I have to lift myself out of the water using the 'eggbeater' kick to protect the goal. Another aspect of the posi- tion is the skill necessary to pass the ball to another player a great distance away. Gil was on the team for the past two seasons. He made the varsity team his first year. Besides playing water polo, Gil was on the diving team in his sopho- more year, and placed fourth in the city, Last year he was on the track team and placed first in the Eastern League in pole vaulting. Without Gil the team would be at a great disadvantage, commented Mi- chelle l-Iollander, team manager. 80 Athletics PH. It's difficult. The Junior Varsity as well as Var- sity teams had some trouble volleying their ball. 'AWe're good athletes, we just have trouble working as a team, said Gwen Roach. Yet the teams managed to pull some victories. The question arose, how were the coaches? Coach Shaffer and Coach Adamson were new at volleyball. Both had coached girls, teams previously, but neither had tried the bumping and set scene. The coaches felt both teams had J.V. Front e- C. Yoshiol-ta, L. Grimes, S. But, they were only the underdogs in the sense that their coaches were new at volleying. The teams both had excellent individual players. Each girl had the ability to be a team of her own . . . but, of course, you ll retty good for underdogs! ll need six girls to play volleyball. I guess it never really clicked . . . how to play as a team, instead of six super individuals, explained Coach Shaffer. The teams both boasted many strong players. Where's The H O First they took away the custodians to clean our rooms, then they took away our towels so we could dry ourselves off after sweating it out in gym, and now, theylve tak- en away our water? Just about. At the start of the school year, the Board of Education knew they had to save more money . . . their source? Waterpolo. The sacrifice directly af- fected the J.V. team - they were cut out completely . The varsity team didn't do too bad, at least they were still able to play. NI guess we can't blame everything on the Board of Education, we lost all of our out- standing players last year, said Rick Gor- den. We just didn't have the athletic strength necessary to win certain games, said Michelle Hollander, team manager. The team did its best, but without the right play- ers the water didnlt always seem to boil just right. Grabbing the ball from his opponent Rick Gorden shows his offensive strengths. The caps are the only place the number can be displayed. A I Coach Owen instructs his team before a game. Many of the games as well as practices were held at Al, lied Gardens pool. Waterpolo 8 1
