Qn e Teri Hemphill spikes the ball while her team- Nancy Aragon, prepared in all ways, readies herself for the coming serve, With short, black hair, naturally dark skin and a shy smile that flashes across her face in an instant, Nancy Aragon was a favorite player on the Varsity Volleyball team. She led the team not only with her excellent sets, but her high morale booster. She played varsi- ty for two years, and J.V. during her sophomore year. But, I never really planned on playing volleyball . . . it just happened, Nancy explained. With Nancy's sister playing before her, it just seemed natural for her to join the team. Nancy's spirit shined through even at the practices. She totally gets into the game she carries the whole team, even if you can't play well, said a teammate. And Nancy did exactly that. Even after losing a game, Nancy cheered and grinned at her team- mates, urging them to victory. She gave more than team support, she put that special oomph into our team . . . an oomph that they really needed. 78 Athletics mates cover against Kearny . , llsss , .....,p--4 ' . ,-iff- ' N 1 t I l 55 S 1

I love playing tennis and living in San Diego, said Yvonne Kouw, now a resident of our city for almost a year and a half. Before living here, she lived in Holland. In Holland she took her dis- trict training in tennis. With district training you have to dedicate yourself to tennis so you can become profession- al, explained Yvonne. I love Amer- ica . . . there are so many opportuni- tiesll' Yvonne definitely took advantage of many of these opportunities. Besides playing tennis, she attended many diffi- cult classes here at school. She also attended night school in order to gra- duate early. Yvonne was very successful in her tennis ranking. She switched often be- tween nfl and 02. She also made many friends while on the team. Yvonne's one of the nicest people, commented Amy Hill. Tennis 77

It's difficult. The Junior Varsity as well as Var- sity teams had some trouble volleying their ball. 'AWe're good athletes, we just have trouble working as a team, said Gwen Roach. Yet the teams managed to pull some victories. The question arose, how were the coaches? Coach Shaffer and Coach Adamson were new at volleyball. Both had coached girls, teams previously, but neither had tried the bumping and set scene. The coaches felt both teams had J.V. Front e- C. Yoshiol-ta, L. Grimes, S. But, they were only the underdogs in the sense that their coaches were new at volleying. The teams both had excellent individual players. Each girl had the ability to be a team of her own . . . but, of course, you ll retty good for underdogs! ll need six girls to play volleyball. I guess it never really clicked . . . how to play as a team, instead of six super individuals, explained Coach Shaffer. The teams both boasted many strong players.
