I love playing tennis and living in San Diego, said Yvonne Kouw, now a resident of our city for almost a year and a half. Before living here, she lived in Holland. In Holland she took her dis- trict training in tennis. With district training you have to dedicate yourself to tennis so you can become profession- al, explained Yvonne. I love Amer- ica . . . there are so many opportuni- tiesll' Yvonne definitely took advantage of many of these opportunities. Besides playing tennis, she attended many diffi- cult classes here at school. She also attended night school in order to gra- duate early. Yvonne was very successful in her tennis ranking. She switched often be- tween nfl and 02. She also made many friends while on the team. Yvonne's one of the nicest people, commented Amy Hill. Tennis 77

,.- -W - Love n Th How would you like to battle against your best friend to be number one? This problem was often present on the girls tennis team. Because the girls on the team were so competitive as well as excellent players, they ended up competing against each other for first, second and third posi- tions on the team. But, despite everything, the girls made lasting friendships. Ult's really very hard playing competitively for rank against a good friend, said Amy ll G have no MCEnroes . . . Gutowitz. The ranks of the team were in constant change. No one player dominat- ed the sport throughout the season. Al- though Dimitri Fulton, Yvonne Kouw, Les- lie Herbert, and Amy Hill were the leading players, they were always jockeying for the top position. i'But, it was really kind of funny. No matter how much a position meant to me, I still was glad when one of my friends won it. The feeling of friendship was so Dimitri Fulton smashes a shot down the line to baffle her opponent. 76 Athletics Court strong. The girls remained friends out- side the courts as well as inside. The team had a unique style and grace that set them apart from the rest. They were very calm and collected. We have no McEnroes, but we do have Tracy Aus- tins and Chris Evert-Lloyds, explained Laura Parmer. The team's success showed not only on the courts, but in their winnings. P.H. She led the team not only with her excellent sets, but her high morale booster. She played varsi- ty for two years, and J.V. during her sophomore year. But, I never really planned on playing volleyball . . . it just happened, Nancy explained. With Nancy's sister playing before her, it just seemed natural for her to join the team. Nancy's spirit shined through even at the practices. She totally gets into the game she carries the whole team, even if you can't play well, said a teammate. And Nancy did exactly that. Even after losing a game, Nancy cheered and grinned at her team- mates, urging them to victory. She gave more than team support, she put that special oomph into our team . . . an oomph that they really needed. 78 Athletics mates cover against Kearny . , llsss , .....,p--4 ' . ,-iff- ' N 1 t I l 55 S 1
