Cn the U in Champions once more At first thought, badminton seemed to be a sport for the frail or nonathletic type of person. This was definitely not true. The sport was one of skill and thought. No haphazard swing would lead to victory. Immense concentration was necessary in playing a match Knot to mention watching one.l To the new- comer it was a confusing sport with many complicated rules and tech- niques. As was predicted, the Coed Badminton Team had a great season dominating the Eastern League. The leading male players, Hai John- son and Duc Ha, with the leading girls, Ta Quyen, Luangriseth Tou and South- ida Khit, were a great factor in the team's success. However it wasn't through these people's efforts alone that the team grabbed victories. The entire team worked together to make this season one in the long line of suc- ll t's hard to it out . . . take ll P.H. Many players found different as- pects of badminton difficult. Robert Gutowitz explained, I find it hard to take the birdie out of the net . . . l don't know, it's a real pain! On October 13th there was a tourna- ment with La Jolla. Nearing the end of the tournament only one match re- mained on the floor. It was a men's doubles with Sirimanotham Prasith and Hphayavong Sommay representing Henry. There was nothing but silence as our team inched their way to an ex- hausting victory. This was one example of the outstanding determination that our badminton team emphasized. Overall the season was an immense success and predictions on the same line were already being made for next season. Luangviseth Phonseng confidently returns the serve. Lnangviseth Phonseng backs up her dou- bles partner, Ta Quyen, who smashes the birdie across the net. 8

,.- -W - Love n Th How would you like to battle against your best friend to be number one? This problem was often present on the girls tennis team. Because the girls on the team were so competitive as well as excellent players, they ended up competing against each other for first, second and third posi- tions on the team. But, despite everything, the girls made lasting friendships. Ult's really very hard playing competitively for rank against a good friend, said Amy ll G have no MCEnroes . . . Gutowitz. The ranks of the team were in constant change. No one player dominat- ed the sport throughout the season. Al- though Dimitri Fulton, Yvonne Kouw, Les- lie Herbert, and Amy Hill were the leading players, they were always jockeying for the top position. i'But, it was really kind of funny. No matter how much a position meant to me, I still was glad when one of my friends won it. The feeling of friendship was so Dimitri Fulton smashes a shot down the line to baffle her opponent. 76 Athletics Court strong. The girls remained friends out- side the courts as well as inside. The team had a unique style and grace that set them apart from the rest. They were very calm and collected. We have no McEnroes, but we do have Tracy Aus- tins and Chris Evert-Lloyds, explained Laura Parmer. The team's success showed not only on the courts, but in their winnings. P.H.
