All that jazz 'gThe thing that impresses me about this school is that unlike some schools known for one area of excellence such as drama or cho- rus, Patrick Henry is top flight in everything - it's a super, well-rounded program, re- marked Mr. Torns, head of the instrumental music department. This statement naturally included the award-winning Jazz Ensemble, consisting of fourteen boys and one girl. Al- rv -'Ole fe , Q . 5 r -... ' though the Jazz Ensemble is a class, few of the people who survived the auditions were able to arrange their schedules to include it. So the ensemble became a kind of club - practicing two hours every Tuesday night and during many of the activity lunches. The Ensemble competed in festivals, played in the Band Variety Show, and supplied the Drama Department with music when they needed it. Another branch of instrumental music was the ever- changing, volunteer pep-band. To cheer on their school teams and raise spirits at rallies, members of the band or orchestra signed up for a smaller balanced band to provide activities with music. The Pep Band accompanied the Drama Department in the Voter Registration Promotion and Compet- tion. Few people realized the extra rehearsal and time volunteered by the band, But we enjoyed it, said one student. We get free admission to the games, letter credit and piz- za parties afterwards! Take Note Good Quality Music - according to Di- rector Warren Torns, that's what the Orches- tra provided its listeners this year. High Quality, he said is the best way to describe these very talented musicians. Torns, how- ever, was not alone in his high regard for the orchestra. This group received many honors this past year. Perhaps the biggest honor was being selected to perform at the annual Cali- fornia Music Educators Associations Conven- tion in San Jose. All of the members were proud to be one of the only two orchestras chosen, but as one musician remarked, It was pretty scary performing for an entire audience of music teachers. ll t was pretty scary. Other high points of the year included the All-State Mt. Miguel Festival in April, and their yearly Winter Concert. Mr. Torns felt that one exceptional aspect of this orchestra was that, They don't use any of that wa- tered down music that some high school or- chestras playf' Another impressive fact is that most of the students participated in their spare time, after school and during lunch. Madden Flea rin Q. ff g fj' A revolution in Patrick l-lenry's choral mu- sic history occurred last year - for the first time, a well-known group was made up solely of the female sex! The department had always been a little short of men, yet managed to keep up an excellent top choral group. Finally, however, Bel Cantos had reached the bottom of the barrel. We had to make a choice, lamented Mr. Keller. The kids wanted to maintain their past standard of excellence, but lacked the men with the cali- ber voices neededf' So, the Bel Cantos re- sorted to an all-girl singing group. The girls seemed to think that they moved faster with- out the men, but, of course missed them. It remained to be seen whether or not this was a permanent change. 262 Associations
