Step tint Time l Left, left, left, right, left. Marching in step behind the band, forty smiling girls executed the precise moves they had been practicing since July. The Liberty Belle Drill Team com- peted in five parades and three field shows as well as performing at home football games and pep rallies. At 7:30 in the morning on November 13 every girl met in front of the school to get ready to board the buses for the Mission Viejo parade and field show. On a crowded bus, forty girls hurriedly changed into their parade uniforms before the actual competition. After the parade the bus was boarded again to take the Drill Team to the field show at a nearby high school. The band and drill team marched out on the field and started their routine and afterwards the awards were given out. At the Columbus Day parade, drill team won first place. At the Santee Tournament they achieved fourth placeg at the Mission Viejo parade they won second and third place and at Oceanside they won first place. The Drill Team also performed at a Clipper game and a Charger game. lt was really excitingfl said Debi Pixley. Being a Liberty Belle requires skill and dedication and often up to twenty hours of practice a week. The forty-five member squad, under the leadership of Colonel Arline Fuentes and Advisor Sherri Dierker, had an excellent year. We really pulled together, and that made all the difference. s 'Long may they wave for the school of the free and the home of the Patriots! The Flag Team marches with flying colors in the Columbus Day Parade. The immensity of the entire team is obvious in this view of the Drill Team, Flag Team, Marching Band, Drum major, Baton Twirler and Sign Carriers. , The Rose Parade is a wish for nearly all bands, and for our band, their wish came true. Said senior Lynn Carman, lt's an ex- perience l'll never forget. The long financial and physical struggle finally culminated in a SW mile march which lasted 2 hours. Said Drum 'Major Ernie Maschner, lt was a lot of work and a long walk but hearing the crowd roar when we passed, inspired us to keep going. The band practiced everyday for 3 hours - 20 band alumni returned to Henry to practice for 8 hours, and to participate in the parade. In addition to daily practices and weekend competitions, the band members were re- quired to jog miles in order to build stamina and endurance because the two hour, 5h hour march was conducted with no breaks whatsoever. Patrick Henry was the first city high school band from San Diego to participate in the parade, and they were one of only 10 high school bands to be chosen to participate in the Rose Parade. Audrey Conley stated that her favorite part of the event was not marching or prepar- ing, but getting up at 3:00 a.m. We were all tired afterwards, but being up early with ev- erybody was really fun. When asked whether his band won any prizes or trophies in the parade, Director Warren Torns stated, They asked us to come, and that's reward enough. Sign Carriers proudly bear the Patrick Henry name as they preceed the band. Tryouts were held among the Drill Team members to decide who would carry the signs. The band proudly marches in formation despite many hardships they encountered in the parade. Not only did the float preceding the band break down, but the fact that horses led the parade made marching diffi- cult and messy. 256 Associations
