She recently had the opportunity hey push and shove and talk back to the teacher. to return to Holland and visit her family. I had trouble remembering some of the language! she laughed. Adjusting to American life could have been difficult, but Kouw felt welcomed by her new American friends. Everybody was interested to know what life in Holland was like, and it made it easier to talk to people at first. Kouw had a similar experience when she returned to Holland. There, they were interested to know what life in America was like. Both groups of friends had ac- quired a new slang vocabulary, and Kouw had fun catching up. Kouw had an exciting experience and the influence of a different cul- ture added dimension and excite- ment to the campus. l'rn really having fun! No longer nervous, Patricia Kouw, a for- eign student, from Holland finds out that Americans aren't very different than Dutch. V rsiil At 10:30 a.m., in Holland, a group of thirty-four teenagers leave their required English course, and walk together to their Dutch class. it,s the same people all year long, for every class, says Patricia Kouw, a sophomore. When Patricia and her family moved here from the Netherlands, she was curious but a little nervous about meeting the type of people she had seen on Dallas and Chips called 'AAmerica-ms. The kids here are nicer. In Holland, they push and shove and talk back to the teacher. Here in America, kids do what they are supposed to do. The scheduling in school differs from in America. ln Holland, a stu- dent might have Spanish and Engs lish on Monday, geometry on Wednesday and P.E. on Thursday. Everyday is different there. There are about thirty different classes a week and so much homework. The teachers expect more of you. In Hol- land, school systems leave out orga- nized sport teams. What would school be without football?
