1? ,ra , gf at or 5 vs , , ,f i Valedictorians from the Language Angle 'AlVIy goal was not to be a valedictorian, but to reach my potential. I didnlt even know what a valedictorian was until last year, stated Debbie Zimmerman. Steve Koppel, Vicky Sluzky and Jackie IVIcVicar N didn 't know what a Valedictorian was. agreed with Debbie that their motivation was not to be a Valedictorian, but to meet the challenge. They felt that the title was t - K' 1 Q-:fer ' -at just an added benefit to their success. I-Iowever, all four noted that they had to give up something for their Hsuccessn. Jackie had to give up ballet because her grades began to fall, and Steve felt he missed out on some of the 'tnormal high school activities. Yet, in many ways all had completely unique experiences. One common characteristic among the foursome was their affinity for foreign lan- guages. Vicky and Debbie acquired their second language by living in foreign coun- tries, and Steve and Jackie acquired theirs from home. Because they now speak two, or in the case of Vicky, 3 lan- guages, they have found it easier to learn new languages, and plan to become famil- iar with more in the future. Vicky summed it up, Learning different languages is a hobby of mine. Dong Stagner Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?
