Not due until mid- December. At least eight weeks to go. Al- most immediately, I knew what the subject of my paper would be: The Curse of Tutankhamen's Tomb. No problem! - I've seen at least two movies on the subject. The first week was think it overl' time. No worry! I'd told Mom about the l'easy'I assignment. The second week brought only a casual question from Mother as to how I was do- ing. I told her Sue Ellen and I were going to see Raiders of the Lost Ark and I was sure this would prove invaluable as refer- ence material - Mom believed that Soup is good food, so she fed Sue Ellen and me a bowl of Campbell's and we de- parted for the movies. Week three - no panic, but I felt I should show some progress - if not for Mom, at least for my history teacher and Sue Ellen Iwho although not too con- cerned, did ask how the term paper was coming along.l The fourth week was a time to lay back. I assured Mom land Sue Ellenl that all was going well. After all, I knew what I wanted to write about and even had a sorta outline in my head. Besides, Fri- day night Sue Ellen and I saw a remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchersv which, I'm sure, anyone would classify as primary reference material for my term paper. Fifth week - a feeling of I've got to get going. This feeling was strongly rein- forced by Mom and Sue Ellen although the latter didn't object to four nights of mov- ies, etc. which were totally unrelated to my term paper. ll 1 VG got to get going. Sixth week - get with it weekf, I bought a pack of index cards and started my research effort. I even filled out four of the cards during thirty-minutes of library research, II was aided greatly by Sue Ellen's sharpening of my pencils.l Mom was concerned, but confident I'd make it after I assured her of my progress. Week seven was sort of a calm before the storm. I relaxed, confident that a ll ooo great literary mind, such as mine, could handle the assignment. Mom and Sue El- len were somewhat less confident, Sue El- len helped by consoling me and building up my confidence during five dates that week. The two nights we didn't see each other, she uassistedl' me by four-hour phone calls which said, I know you can do itll, Week eight - Doomsday! However, I approached it bravely - I knew I could do it! I had a whole stack of somewhat disorganized index cards which I knew I could blend into something of Pulitzer Prize quality tif I were only a little older! It's midnight and I've got about 100 of the required words on paper and my master- piece is due tomorrow morning. Then lightning struck - I recalled my history teacher said the paper had to be neatly typed. I called Sue Ellen - her father didnlt seem to realize the critical position I was in. l-Ie said, 'll-leck No!'l to the sugges- tion that Sue Ellen come over and type my paper. It's 4a.m in the morning, my paper is due. I've written 200 brilliant'l words of the required 500. I switch my late-night companion radio from KFMB mellow rock to KSON and hear a country western ol- die - Have I Waited Too Long?
