You all know as well as I do, No Pain - No Gain! reiterated Coach Owen of the Coed Swim Team. lt was a cloudy day in March and time trials were to be held the following day. Nev- ertheless, there would be the usual tough workout. Coach Owen sauntered along the deck offering only limited en- couragement. The few positive things he does say are more encouraging than a long speech made by any coach, commented a swim team member. He expects a lot of us and we do the best we can . . . that's all he'll accept, commented Michelle Hollander. However, there was a lighter side to Coach Owen. ln March the First Annu- al Italian Swimming Relay Meet was held, in which all categories of swim- mers and divers were represented. The relays included demanding skills. The best was last - swimming with a spoon in mouth with a ping-pong ball on the end. With the wind and waves in the pool, it proved to be a hilarious exhibition. At the end of the relay the teams were scored and prizes given. Never were doughnuts appreciated so much, commented Shirleen St. Clair. Such actions made Coach Owen one of the most popular and effective coaches. However it was back to busi- ness that cloudy afternoon by the pool. Coed Swimming 125

Everyone's Swim Team Practically every sport was affected by the ruthless budget cuts. Swimming wasn't an exception. At the beginning of the year we didn't expect there'd be a guy's team, said Shirleen St. Clair. ll hey are pretty tough. It was looking grim for the swimmers until a fund raising activity was held that greatly contributed to the fund. Swim team members were sponsored by individuals who paid the swimmers a fixed amount for every lap swam. lt helped our budget a great deal and it was a lot of fun, said Linda Cuzick. The teams were made Coed. This pleased many. Now we have more time to scam on the guys, said Mi- chelle l-lollander. The teams were coed in practice but they competed sepa- rately. Practicing with the girls was great but I'd hate to swim against them in a meet, they're pretty toughf' said Wade Duckworth. Under the excellent guidance of Coach Barry Owen, both teams combined as one and had very successful seasons. The Diving Team received superb coaching from Pat Flood. lt was worth all the freezing, standing on the board, out of the warm water, all the painful mistakes, to be able to do well in com- petition, Pat's a great coachfl said Marty Comer. A Mat Thinker Ron Stowers -5 not only physically adept, but mentally, as well. Ron also participated on the A.S.B. We're not the dumb jocks that ev- eryone thinks we are, said Ron Stowers, it takes a lot more to being a wrestler than the rest of the world thinks. Ron found that wrestling was a challenge to his mental abilities. Wrestling is more challenging than any sport l've ever played . . . that in- cludes football or baseball. You have to be the best athlete, and you really have to think, said Stovvers. ll I e re not dumb jocks. Stowers played on our Varsity Wres- tling team for his three years in sports. I-le added immensely to the team, be- cause he understood that in order to win, one must think on the mat. For every move my opponent would make, l needed to know the counter-move. lt's really scary when your opponent pulls a move that you've never seen before, said Ron. Ron is one of the smartest guys on our team, when it comes to thinking quick on the mat, said Coach Thompson. The best thing about wrestling is when you win, you've done it on your own.
