With the opening of the season, came the rainiest streak of weather San Diego had had in a long time, said ll rack had a tough time with the rain. Coach Runge, head track coach. The weather unfortunately postponed the opening meet, and made for sluggish practice and slippery play. It was a real drag because of the rain, we had to work out in the weight room, l would've much rather been improving my jump, said James Gregory. Boys track had a tough time with the rain - Maybe even more so than girls . . . Have you ever tried stuffing 30 guys into a weight room because it was too wet outside? ln track, as well as field, timing was an important aspect for training of our Patriots. A'Timing is the ultimate in the relay, when one guy's off, man we are all off, said James Gregory. From the hand-off in the relay, to the shot in the shot putters guide, timing was what led our boys track and field team to victory after victory. 4+ -mmf As a packed Sports Arena looking on. Lolanda White steps up the pace coming out of the last turn of her race at the Michelob Invitational Track Meet. fi Running Our school colors were green and gold, so why did members of the track team wear lavender and black to the Michelob Invita- tional Track Meet? Because at this meet, high school teams ran independent of their schools, and didn't wear school colors. When the girls and guys found out that they would be running, they realized they needed uniforms. We left it up to the girls. We said that we'd wear anything they came up with, said Lonze Townsend. The girls went to work designing a uniform. The results were lavender midshirts and leotards and Sprinting out of the turn, Robin Davis kicks for the finish line to pass the baton to the next runner in the relay. Tra With his own style of pole vaulting, Gil Goren towers above the ground, He clears the vault with the best height of any Patriot. Color black tights. The guys dressed reluctantly and headed for the meet. The girls had their race earlier in the day, before the crowds had arrived. When it was time for the guys to run, the stands were packed. The Sports Arena was sold out. After the race John Davis com- mented, We didn't know if they were cheer- ing us on or laughing at us. Both teams placed high out of the 14 coun- ty teams competing, and on one dropped the baton. After the Sons of Liberty and the colorful uniforms of the Michelob meet, we're now left to wonder about what next year's running teams will do, said Coach Runge. Ck and Field 115
