its Been 3 Long Time Being leadoff hitter and shortstop, Jill Past' man is a great asset to the team. How can anyone play one sport for so long and not be sick of it? Well, if you are declicated, you can live through it. Senior Jill Pastman has been playing softball' for hall' her life, nine years, straight, She came through the strong' Navajo Bobby Sox League and played in in off season amateur leagues, often playing with girls much older than her. 'Tm getting a little bit bored of playing, you are dedicated? you can liven V l through it. but I'll always love softball. Playing softball allthose years, she had matured into a fine ballplayer. Her talent has put her on the Varsity squad for three years, last year winning Most Valuable Player Defense for her job of filling in as catcher in the CIF finals. Shes very versatile, said Coach lm- lay. 104 Athletics Back: N. Aragon, B. Rice, C. Carlson, T. Hem- Before each game, senior Bonnie Rice enjoys phill, C. Steed. D, Stiles, M. Being the younger sister of a super ballplayer, Barb, of a few years back, Debbie Young still feels the pressue of living up to her sister's softball stan- dards. Barb was a three year Varsity player on a past team. We used to be really competitive. She always won ev- erything but I kept trying. Her sister set a hard example for her to follow and that inspired her to do her best during each game. I would like to be ll try as hard as I can. as good as Barb, but I know I won't be. I just try as hard as I can, Coming from the Navajo Bobby Sox League, she developed strong softball skills. Coach Shaffer had no trouble with Debbie. She's very coachable and eager to improve. Debbie gave it everything she's got, on and off the field. Her ability to lead and support the team was apparent by her position at shortstop. I. V. Softball 103

Talk It Twelve girls and a coach sitting in a circle out in right field? ls that how you play the game? No, but circle ses- sions were common practice on the Varsity softball field. Coach Bob lmlay felt that Aopen communication is nec- essary for a team to be successful and ll you use it correctly it really helps work together. Barb Mays liked the sessions. 'Alf something is troubling you, whether it is about softball or not, it helps to get it out in the openfl During circle sessions everyone was an equal and could talk freely about prob- lems, and have friends and teammates offer solutions. Kilt helps to bring our team closer together, besides just play- ing with each other out on the field, said Christe Carlson. Coach lmlay also tried hypnosis be- fore certain games to help relieve the VEI' pressure and relax the girls. I think it's great, said catcher Nancy Aragon. Ulf you use it correctly it really helps. The softball team may have seemed laid back but don't let their style fool you. lnside they were as aggressive as ever. They were eager to beat their toughest opponent, Madison, whom they hadn't won in 4 years. They broke the Warhawk's 48 game winning streak. The Varsity softball squad was well rounded in all areas but excelled in de- fense. Mlt's the strongest part of our game, said Coach lmlay, but offense is the key to winning. Well, they must have had that key because looking back on the season, they were definite- ly winners. PH.
