With a staff of 13 teachers, we are instructing over 2000 students in the sciences. We estimate that near 50 community speakers will be brought in as authorities in the fields and careers of interest to the students. We will be taking classes on field trips to the San Diego Zoo. Wild Animal Park, Tide Pools, among many others. We expect to hurdle many difficulties this year presented by a 55 minute schedule which could severely limit learning experiences we have used in the past. New courses include Chemistry 3-4 and Biology 3-4 both of which should enable students to pass placement exams for as many as eight semester credits at state and university colleges. lf there is a student here interested in science related careers: he will find we are prepared to help him arrive at his goal. i wr- rf? 16 V Qi.VMrs. Sixty per cent of the student body at Patrick Henry elected to enroll in one or more of the seventeen courses offered by the Mathematics Department. Course content ranged from General Math to Honors Calculus. Eighty per cent of the 2400 students in math classes took one of the standard courses in Algebra, Geometry. and Trigonometry. Other courses offered included Technical Math lfeaturing practical applications of math to technical problems related to shop workl, Logical Reasoning lintroducing development of the skill for placing everyday experiences and arguments in logical form. with emphasis on validity testingl, Computers lan introduction to the operation and programming of desktop computersl, Time Share Terminal limplementing a program for enrichment topics in programming and Mathematical concepts amenable to computer solutionsl. The department also offered Math Seminars in probability Aand Modern Algebra for non-mathfscience oriented college prep students interested in majoring in such areas as life science, the social sciences, and business.
